When your heels hurt , what to do and how to avoid these unpleasant sensations? It’s simply impossible not to notice them; throughout the day they will haunt you every minute. And at night they won’t let you sleep normally, constantly reminding you of yourself. The worst thing is when you don’t even know what could have caused such unbearable discomfort.
There are two most popular causes of heel pain :
Most often, heels are damaged after jumping from a height.
Love your new shoes but find it almost impossible to wear them? Don't try to endure the pain.
Usually the case is limited to pain for a week without serious complications.
Calluses will go away quickly and will not leave marks, but more serious problems are possible.
Extensive injuries to the entire foot may be accompanied by fractures of the heel bone. This is where the help of an orthopedist is needed as soon as possible.
Deformation of the arch of the foot is quite real if you wear shoes that don’t fit you well for a long time. And this entails problems not only with the heels, but also with the spine.
But avoiding all this is not so difficult, follow these rules :
But it just so happens that many people take care of their feet, but still experience discomfort in the sole area . The shoes are comfortable, there have been no injuries for a very long time, what could be the matter?
The first thing people think about is arthritis . The human foot consists of many bones that are connected to each other by joints. Mobility in them is greatly limited, but it is still joint tissue and it can become inflamed for the same reasons as in other parts of the body.
Lovers of red wine, red fish and meat experience all the “delights” of gout as they age. Although the first manifestations of the disease are more typical in the knee joints, the heel can also suffer. And you will suffer along with your heel; although medicine has advanced over the past centuries, you will have to pay for your excessive love for “red” foods.
Both diseases are characterized by:
The sole itself is a unique structure . You should also pay attention to its anatomical features; the same plantar fascia has a tendency to develop inflammation. These conditions are called fasciitis , they are painful and can remind of themselves even decades later.
The reminder itself is unpleasant and consists of the deposition of salts at the site of inflammation . In particularly advanced cases, it can lead to the formation of a “ heel spur .” It seems that, from the point of view of evolution, such an anatomical detail is not typical for humans. But spurs can be seen not only in cowboy films; prolonged accumulation of salt leads to the formation of a growth on the bone .
Now just imagine - where there should have been nothing, a dense growth forms. Its consistency is comparable to bone tissue, which means that all underlying tissues will be compressed, especially when walking.
An orthopedist cannot always determine the cause of pain, and this is not surprising. The list of diseases with such symptoms may include:
From this list, only gonorrhea can “slip through” unnoticed; the symptoms of all other pathological conditions are too obvious and dangerous to the patient’s health for the doctor to afford not to notice them.
At least determining the state of metabolism in the body is not bad. The heel alone, unless it is an injury, is not treated. Therapy is systemic and aimed at eliminating the causes of the underlying disease. As soon as it goes away, the problems with your leg will disappear. If changes have already begun in the joint tissue itself, they resort to local therapy: electrophoresis, injections, ointments .
We can talk about our legs for a very long time. The most paradoxical point is that we practically do not pay attention to this part of the body when everything is in order. Even in gyms, many people choose to skip leg day. But any disease, injury or even a minor cut deteriorates our quality of life for a long time.
Feeling “as if without legs,” a person feels absolutely helpless. It takes the longest to solve problems with the plantar surface of the foot ; a person transfers all his weight to it while walking and this part of the body receives the maximum load from our weight.
Any tissue disruption will be compressed mechanically every time you try to simply stand on your feet. And every sick person will try not to be a burden to others and show independence. This unnecessary initiative will only lead to an extension of the length of stay in a hospital bed.
If your heels hurt, what to do and how to get rid of the discomfort yourself are not questions for which you should look for answers on the Internet. Get qualified help from an experienced specialist and pay as much attention as possible to resolving this issue.
Next is a video with Dr. Neumyvakin, who talks about what you need to do if you experience heel pain , and what folk recipes there are:
It is not uncommon to experience pain in the heels or feet, which causes discomfort and prevents you from doing your usual activities. In this case, you should not only familiarize yourself with common situations and their solutions, but also pay attention to going to an experienced specialist, because you cannot do without medical help, since this may be a sign of a serious problem that cannot be dealt with at home at home. It will work out, but you can only make it worse. In another article, read about why your knee hurts and how to cure it.
The article collects the main problems associated with heel pain and suggests known solutions to them, but this information is offered for informational purposes only.
For heel pain, knotweed or burdock helps a lot. The grass is placed in shoes or socks, which are not removed throughout the day. Compresses made from grated potatoes or grated black radish along with the peel also help relieve pain. Compresses can be done at night by wrapping your leg in a plastic bag and wearing socks.
The cause of pain in the feet and heels of the feet can primarily be excess weight, an inactive lifestyle, flat feet or incorrectly selected shoes. Foot massages, baths with crushed ice (only the heels are immersed in water), as well as rolling a small ball on the feet can help relieve pain.
Medicines and pain-relieving ointments should be prescribed by a doctor.
Pain in the calves can be caused by heavy physical activity. Also, the cause of pain in the calves may be hidden in the feet - if a person has flat feet, or vice versa, the instep is too high, and he spends a long time in uncomfortable shoes. Sometimes the pain is caused by a tear or inflammation of the Achilles tendon, inflammation of the veins, or narrowing of the arteries. In general, a doctor's verdict is required.
People associate heel pain with heel spurs. Sometimes 30-minute compresses of kefir or warm boiled crushed potatoes with the addition of a tablespoon of kerosene help to calm it down.
Pain in the heels and feet of both legs in the morning are symptoms of inflammation of the plantar fascia, resulting from the accumulation of salts in the area of inflammation. This leads to the formation of a bone growth, popularly referred to as a heel spur.
Pain with this disease can bother you not only in the morning, but also after a short rest. If you do not consult a doctor, the condition will only get worse.
In addition to external causes (uncomfortable shoes, excessive stress, bruises), heel pain can be caused by plantar fasciitis, heel spurs, rheumatism, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, etc. Take the survey and get the answer to your question.
In most cases, heel pain, if it is not a spur, can occur for several reasons, namely due to:
- standing on your feet for a long time;
- significant physical activity;
- load associated with carrying heavy loads;
- injuries and sprains of tendons.
Heel pain is caused by constant overstrain of the arch of the foot, especially when the shoes are incorrectly selected, heels are too high or excess weight (obesity). Symptoms of heel pain are also inherent in a number of diseases - rheumatoid arthritis, gout, ankylosing spondylitis, osteomyelitis and injuries - tendon sprains, ruptures, bruises and fractures.
You can find out the cause of heel pain from a surgeon, neurosurgeon, traumatologist, orthopedist, neurologist, since there are more than enough reasons for this - heel spurs, arthritis, tendon injuries, plantar fasciitis, etc.
During pregnancy, the growing fetus causes a woman to involuntarily lean back. Naturally, the greatest load falls on the heels, which is why painful sensations arise in them. This is fine.
Painful and unpleasant sensations in the heel cause a lot of inconvenience, depriving a person of the ability to move . Most often, the pathology develops in women, since they wear high heels and uncomfortable (but beautiful) shoes, which cause harm to their feet.
Improperly distributed load on the foot is not the last factor in the list of causes of heel pain.
Why do heels hurt in the morning, what diseases provoke this and what indirect causes occur, we will consider further.
Conventionally, all possible causes of heel pain in the morning can be divided into two groups:
Non-pathological causes include the following manifestations:
It is enough to remove the aggressively influencing factor, and the pain will immediately become less and eventually disappear on its own without third-party intervention. Pathologies and diseases that cause heel pain after sleep require more detailed consideration, since their level of danger is several times higher.
If we consider the pathology from a medical point of view, then it is more correct to talk about the presence of plantar fasciitis. The fact is that the plantar aponeurosis is a section of the foot that serves as a connecting fascia between the heel tubercle and the heads of the metatarsal bones. With its help, support is provided for the longitudinal part of the foot, which is extremely important under loads.
Plantar fasciitis is determined by the presence of an inflammatory process at the above joint of the foot.
The pain is burning, sharp, sharp. It intensifies with physical activity and long walks. When the foot is at rest, the pain becomes less, but is not able to completely disappear. The peak of pain occurs in the early morning, when a person tries to get out of bed.
The heel itself is very painful, but in the case of an advanced stage of the inflammatory process, the pain can spread to the entire foot, radiating to the ankle area.
A surgeon or orthopedist can determine the presence of the disease. They are the ones you should go to if you have complaints about heel pain. If the above symptoms persist, the doctor is able to make a diagnosis, but to confirm it, a number of auxiliary research methods will be required:
Getting rid of plantar aponeurosis is not easy. This may take months. The greatest effectiveness in treatment can be its complexity, that is, the impact of several treatment options at once:
The most effective for heel pain is a compress of garlic puree. It is applied to the heel in a thin layer, wrapping the foot in warmth. Helps quickly get rid of spurs, and the skin will become soft and soft.
This chronic disease is determined by the presence of a tumor (spur), which presses on nearby soft tissue, causing acute pain . Externally, the presence of pathology cannot be determined, however, with palpation and the presence of corresponding symptoms, it is possible to diagnose the disease.
Often working conditions do not meet expectations. The profession involves working on your feet - waiters, sales consultants, hairdressers, couriers, cooks. There are professions associated with sedentary work that puts stress on the legs - operators, receptionists, economists, bank workers.
I love my profession, I don’t want to quit, but the working conditions do not allow me to continue working. Let's look at the consequences of sitting and standing work, and how to eliminate leg pain.
Signs that require you to take a closer look at your health:
If your job is stressful, don't despair. It is better to prevent pain by using preventive measures. Let's look at tips to help avoid the consequences of standing or sedentary work.
Take your shoe purchases seriously so that your feet don't hurt.
While taking preventive measures at work, when you come home, perform procedures that relieve fatigue and pain from your legs.
If your legs hurt every day, consult a surgeon, phlebologist, or orthopedist. You need to be sure that your legs hurt due to working conditions, and not because of varicose veins, flat feet or problems with the spine and joints. Maybe working on your feet is contraindicated. Don't take risks!
Take a common test. Measure your ankle volume in the morning without getting out of bed, measure in the evening. If the difference is more than 1 cm, there is a problem with the blood vessels. Consult a doctor, do not self-medicate. The measures described are advice, not treatment.
There is no ideal job, there is a favorite job to which you can adapt. Remember the rule - “Help yourself!”
If you follow the rules, there will be no increased fatigue and pain in the legs. Consequently, there will be increased performance, good mood, and lightness on the legs.
When running or walking, the human heel acts as a kind of shock absorber. It is very sensitive because it contains nerve endings and blood vessels leading to other areas of the foot. Therefore, even a small injury to the foot causes pain. For people who lead an active life, heel pain is often a serious challenge that is an obstacle to achieving their goals. But even for those who prefer a quieter life, heel inflammation can cause many problems. To ease your fate, you should first find out why your heel hurts, and then start treating it.
If your heel hurts while walking, it may be due to uncomfortable and low-quality shoes. Because of it, many women who prefer high heels experience discomfort. Such shoes are the most dangerous enemy of the foot. When regularly wearing high-heeled shoes or boots, your feet experience severe overload. As a result, severe heel pain often appears.
Often, the heel can hurt in those people who have to stand on their feet for a long time. At the end of the day, fatigue makes itself felt by painful feet while walking. Overweight people often experience heel pain because their feet have to withstand constant overload. Also, discomfort in the foot can be felt after a bruise of the heel bone. The resulting injury can provoke inflammation in the tissues, which will manifest itself as acute pain in the heel. Its other symptoms are similar to tendon injuries: the injured area first turns red, then turns blue and finally turns yellow.
Also, heel pain can occur if there is atrophy of the subcutaneous “cushion”, which is a consequence of very rapid weight loss or excessive physical exertion in combination with daily physical activity. If you experience any discomfort in the foot area, you should definitely consult a specialist. Only the attending physician can accurately determine the causes and prescribe appropriate treatment after diagnosis.
Heel pain can occur due to various diseases, the most common of which are:
The heel is one of the most vulnerable parts of the body. There are many answers to the question of why the heels of the feet hurt. Depending on the diagnosis, the treatment process can vary in duration - from several weeks to several months. The main thing is to be patient and strictly follow the doctor’s recommendations.
Treatment for heel pain depends on the causes that cause it. As a rule, complex therapy is used, which includes a large number of procedures. Surgical intervention is used very rarely - in only 1% of patients, doctors can recommend surgery. Often, you can get rid of the negative factors that cause colic or pain in the heel area by simply changing your lifestyle.
When heels hurt, many doctors recommend doing physical therapy. For this, there are special exercises, the purpose of which is to warm up the muscles of the legs and fascia of the foot. This type of exercise is beneficial for both feet, even if, for example, only the left heel hurts. It increases flexibility and relieves pain.
Heel pain can be treated with medication. To do this, the doctor prescribes medications that help relieve inflammation of the heel bone. Sharp pain in the heel can be localized with painkillers. In some cases, ice compresses can help. For almost all heel diseases, it is recommended to wear orthopedic insoles. They significantly reduce the load on the foot, so using them makes walking much easier for the patient. They are sold in pharmacies or specialty stores.
A fairly common and effective way to treat pain is bandaging. For this, orthopedists recommend an elastic band, which reduces the load on the fascia of the foot. When deciding how to treat heel pain, some doctors recommend corticosteroid injections. They have a strong anti-inflammatory effect, however, since they have a large number of contraindications, they are not indicated for everyone.
One of the new treatments used for foot inflammation is shock wave therapy. For this purpose, there is a special device that affects the sore heel with sound impulses. However, the full effectiveness of such a procedure has not yet been proven.
Many people, when faced with a problem for the first time, do not know what to do if their heel hurts. The best decision is to visit a specialist in the clinic. After all, this may be a sign of some serious illness, which is easier to cure at the initial stage. But this fact does not mean that no folk remedies can be used at all, especially since most of them have been time-tested. It is only important to coordinate your actions with your doctor and then complex therapy will be as effective as possible.
If the pain in your right or left heel does not go away within a few days, you can try the method of alternating cold and heat. This procedure very quickly helps relieve discomfort in the foot area. To carry out such manipulations, you will need two small containers filled with cold and warm water. The affected limbs must be lowered into these containers one by one. If the heel of your left or right foot hurts, a good treatment at home is to massage your foot with a small piece of ice. The procedure is carried out for 7-10 minutes until the skin becomes slightly numb.
If the patient complains that he cannot walk due to severe pain, you can lubricate the soles with a mixture that contains egg and vinegar. To prepare it, a raw chicken egg must be placed in a glass filled with vinegar essence and left for ten days in a dark place. After the specified time has elapsed, the egg is taken out, cleared of the formed film, mixed with butter (40 g) and the resulting product is applied to the sore heel as a compress.
As a preventative measure, and to make it easier to walk when your heels are inflamed, experts recommend performing exercises to strengthen your feet:
If your heels start to hurt while doing exercises, you should stop exercising. Prevention of heel diseases involves avoiding wearing narrow shoes with very high heels or very flat soles. Fashionable ballet shoes today worsen the structure of the sole and cause overstrain of tendons and muscles. It is also very important to promptly treat underlying diseases, for example, osteomyelitis or diabetes, and also monitor your weight, since extra pounds are an additional burden on the legs. Particular attention should be paid to caring for the skin of the feet, avoiding injury as much as possible.
Many people have a problem when their heels crack. In this article you will learn why the heels of your feet become very cracked and painful and how to deal with it.
Severely cracked heels cause a lot of trouble and inconvenience. An infection can get into the cracks, and then an inflammatory process can occur. In addition, legs with cracks hurt a lot and are not aesthetically pleasing. But still, why do the heels of my feet crack and hurt so much?
When painful cracks in the heels appear, most people try, first of all, to get rid of the cracks themselves, without thinking about the causes, and it is the causes that need to be fought. And if you don’t get rid of the root cause, then cracks will appear again and again. Therefore, before prescribing treatment, the doctor will suggest undergoing a general examination to identify the true cause.
It must be remembered that it is necessary to combat cracked heels in a comprehensive manner. Only in this case can you get rid of this problem.
Dry and cracking heels are not just a cosmetic defect that causes aesthetic and physical discomfort. Lack of moisture in the cells of the epidermis leads to the fact that over time, cracks form on the skin, which hurt, become deeper day by day and are more difficult to treat. If conventional care products (softening, moisturizing and nourishing foot creams) turn out to be ineffective, there is reason to think about the true cause of the problem. The sooner the factors that cause dryness, flaking of the skin and the formation of cracks in the heels are identified, the easier it will be to get rid of the pain and give your feet a well-groomed appearance.
Cracked heels most often bother women when, with the arrival of summer, they change their shoes and boots to open sandals and flip-flops. Exposure to natural factors characteristic of the warm season leads to drying of the upper layer of the epidermis and loss of elasticity. Men and children of all ages are also at risk, and the problem can occur at any time of the year.
There are many reasons why the skin on the feet becomes very dry and cracks. These are external factors that can be easily corrected without outside help, and internal diseases that require consultation and examination by doctors.
It’s easy to get rid of cracked heels caused by external factors. It is enough to eliminate the source of the problem and properly care for the skin of your feet.
If the culprit of the discomfort is chronic diseases and malfunctions of the body, you will have to consult a doctor and undergo the necessary examination: self-treatment of cracked heels in this case will be unsuccessful and will last for many years.
The appearance of cracked heels in a child is most often provoked by an incorrectly formulated diet, fungal skin infections or genetic predisposition. To identify the true cause, it is necessary to show the baby to a dermatologist and pediatrician.
In the initial stage of the disease, when the skin dries and peels, inexpensive cosmetics - creams and balms designed for foot care - will help.
Before using any cream - nourishing, moisturizing, softening, wound healing or restoring - you must:
And only then should care or medicinal preparations be applied.
The range of cosmetic products that help moisturize the skin, increase its elasticity and prevent the appearance of cracks is quite large. It is worth noting several of the most effective creams.
The products of the Estonian company Natura Siberica contain vegetable oils and natural extracts that have a beneficial effect on the skin of the feet:

The cream from the French company Neutrogena has a unique healing and restorative formula. Thanks to aloe extract, vitamin E, glycerin, allantoin and panthenol, dryness and flaking of the skin disappear in a matter of days.
To keep your heels looking soft, smooth and tender, the cream should be used daily. The French drug is suitable for the care, prevention and treatment of minor injuries.
When care creams and balms do not give the desired effect, then it is necessary to treat the cracks in the heels with the help of special pharmaceutical preparations. They contain active ingredients that accelerate tissue regeneration and healing of painful formations in the form of cracks.
Cream "Ambulance" fully lives up to its name. Due to the presence of active natural components, the drug has a wound-healing, bactericidal and antifungal effect.
A complex of beneficial substances softens dry and rough skin, prevents the formation of corns and calluses, facilitates the removal of the stratum corneum, accelerates the regeneration and restoration of damaged tissues. When applied daily, the therapeutic effect will appear within 3-5 days.
German ointment for cracks "Gevol" contains:
The drug must be used at least 1-2 times a day for 2 weeks. "Gehwol" gently softens and nourishes rough skin, eliminates dryness and roughness, restores elasticity, accelerates healing and renewal.
Does the domestic dermatoprotective product contain vitamins A and D as active components? and E, glycerin and petroleum jelly. The ointment has an anti-inflammatory and antipruritic effect, normalizes the processes of keratinization of the epidermis, stimulates wound healing and restores the protective properties of the skin.
"Radevit Active" must be applied to skin washed and treated with any antiseptic twice a day - morning and evening. For severe peeling and painful cracks, it is possible to apply an occlusive dressing at night.
Foot balm is designed to soften and nourish dry and cracked feet and heels. It contains vitamins E and B?, aloe vera extract, nutrients and urea, which has antiseptic, deodorizing, moisturizing, photoprotective, exfoliating and keratolytic properties.
"Flexitol" improves the condition of the legs within 3 days from the start of use. To achieve a visible therapeutic effect, it must be applied twice a day - morning and evening, and as a preventive measure - rubbed into the skin of the feet every day before bed.
Foot cream “Lekar” is part of the line of care and therapeutic products of the same name produced by the Russian company VIS LLC. The drug contains natural ingredients that replenish the lack of natural moisture in the cells of the epidermis, soften rough heels and accelerate the healing of cracks:
“Lekar” cream must be applied to clean skin once a day, rubbing in with light circular movements.
Veterinary cream "Zorka" has been successfully used for several decades not only for the treatment of livestock, but also for cosmetic purposes. This drug contains a unique substance called Floralizin. It is a complex of biologically active substances obtained from natural raw materials:
Despite its specific smell, Zorka cream effectively moisturizes and nourishes the skin, saturates the epidermal cells with life-giving moisture, restores the elasticity and firmness of the skin, improves metabolism and blood circulation, heals wounds and cracks, creates a protective film on the surface of the skin that prevents moisture evaporation . Apply the cream to dry and cracked heels 1-4 times a day. The frequency of use depends on the degree of damage to the dermis.
Cream "Zorka" can also be used for daily care of the skin of the hands and face, for the treatment of stretch marks after childbirth, bedsores, psoriasis, dermatitis, eczema and varicose veins on the legs.
Dexpanthenol is included in many cosmetic and medicinal products intended to moisturize the skin, improve metabolism in epidermal cells, regenerate and restore damaged skin, including cracked heels.
Popular preparations containing dexpanthenol that can be used for foot care include:
Almost all of the drugs listed have no contraindications and do not cause systemic side effects. However, before starting to use any medication, you should carefully study the instructions to avoid undesirable consequences.
For deep, long-term and painful cracks in the heels, it is worth using proven means that prevent further deformation of the tissue.
One of these drugs is medical glue BF-6. It is produced by various pharmaceutical companies in our country and is highly effective and affordable. Before applying the product, the injured area should be washed with soap and dried with a clean towel or cloth.
After antiseptic treatment of the legs, BF-6 glue should be applied with a glass rod and distributed along the entire length of the crack. In this case, you need to grab a few millimeters of healthy tissue bordering the wound and wait until the drug completely hardens. After the fixing agent hardens, a thin and elastic film forms on the surface of the skin, protecting the wound from contact with air and other traumatic factors.
It is not recommended to use any ointments or creams on the feet for the next 5-7 days - during this time the epidermal tissue will partially recover and the depth of the cracks will decrease. And after a week, the feet need to be steamed in warm water and treated with pumice to remove remaining glue and the stratum corneum of the skin. Only after this can you begin treatment with ointments, creams, balms or compresses.
Film-forming cream "HilFix", produced by the Swiss company "Cosmofarm", has similar properties. It helps get rid of cracks, abrasions, cuts and small wounds on the legs and other parts of the body. With all the advantages of the cream, it has one drawback - its high price.
To moisturize the skin of the feet, soften and remove the stratum corneum that causes cracks, it is useful to make cleansing, toning, softening and therapeutic foot baths. All of them are carried out according to the same scheme and do not require much time:
The best recipes for foot baths (based on 1 liter of warm water):
As folk remedies, you can use decoctions of other medicinal plants: string, sage, plantain, marigold, nettle.
You can enhance the effect of natural and medicinal components with the help of oil compresses. At home, it is useful to lubricate the skin of your feet, steamed after a bath, with olive oil, tea tree oil, calendula, sea buckthorn, wrap it in cellophane and put thin cotton socks on top. In the morning, all you have to do is take off your socks and plastic, rinse your feet with warm water and remove the softened layer of skin with a pumice stone.
Instead of cotton ones, you can use special socks and heel pads made of soft medical silicone or rubber. They perfectly soften and moisturize dry and flaky skin of the feet, preventing the appearance of cracks and corns. These accessories are designed for repeated use and do not lose their healing properties even after washing.
If treatment with traditional methods, medicinal or cosmetic ointments is ineffective, there is a reason to consult a dermatologist. If the cause of dry skin and cracked heels is chronic diseases or disorders in the functioning of internal organs, then, in addition to external remedies, other measures may be needed - taking systemic medications, adjusting diet and lifestyle, giving up bad habits.
