Hallux valgus (or, as this pathology is commonly called, “bunion”) develops when there is a change in the area of the metatarsophalangeal joint, which is characterized by a violation of the location of the phalanges of the big toe in relation to each other. Such curvature leads to the appearance of a bump on the outside of the foot and becomes not only a cosmetic defect, but also brings a lot of unpleasant sensations and limitations.
In our article we will tell you about the reasons for the appearance of bunions, methods of its treatment and prevention. Let us note in advance that it is necessary to begin solving this unpleasant problem as early as possible, since as it progresses, therapy may be longer and not always successful. So, how to treat bunions?
Bunions can develop due to many reasons and predisposing factors. According to statistics, this pathology is more often observed in women. Joint deformity can be caused by:
Further, in the absence of adequate therapy and prevention, the pathology progresses, and the person develops aching pain, which becomes completely unbearable when walking. Manifestations of the disease are aggravated by the frequent formation of abrasions and calluses in this area.
Over time, a hammertoe of the second (ring) toe may develop, and the deviation of the big toe to the side becomes more noticeable. Such changes in the shape of the foot constantly remind of themselves with pain; it becomes difficult for a person to choose shoes for himself, and in the most advanced stages of the disease they have to be sewn to order.
The following stages are distinguished in the development of hallux valgus:
The choice of treatment for bunions depends on the stage of the disease. Conservative therapy, which is prescribed in the initial stages of the disease, can only slow down the worsening of foot deformity. Completely stopping the growth of the cone is possible only in some cases. The use of such treatment methods in the moderate and severe stages of the disease does not give any positive results and only wastes time and prolongs the suffering of the patient.
The selection of an orthopedic design is carried out individually depending on the angle of inclination of the thumb.
During the period of treatment, it is necessary to exclude from the diet foods and dishes that contribute to inflammation of the joints (fatty, spicy and starchy foods, spices). Anti-inflammatory non-steroidal drugs for local and internal use can be prescribed to patients with severe pain.
In the process of conservative treatment of hallux valgus, the patient is recommended to wear comfortable and spacious shoes and timely treatment of abrasions and calluses. If flat feet are detected, treatment should also be aimed at eliminating this pathology.
For moderate or severe hallux valgus, surgical treatment is recommended for the patient. Various techniques can be used to correct curvature; there are about 150 of them. Modern types of surgical operations are low-traumatic, they are aimed at correcting the angle between the phalanges of the thumb. After the operation, the patient can begin to walk the very next day. The application of a plaster cast and the wearing of crutches is not provided. After 3-4 days, the patient is discharged from the hospital, and he must wear special insoles or shoes for some time.
In the most advanced cases of hallux valgus, surgeons perform an osteotomy. I fix the bones with special screws, which subsequently remain in the patient’s body. Such a surgical operation requires a longer recovery - it can take about 1-1.5 months.
Gymnastics for the feet with hallux valgus can be used to treat the initial stages of the disease and to prevent the appearance of bunions. The main rule when doing it is regularity.
These simple exercises will help strengthen the muscles and ligaments of the foot and improve blood circulation in the deformed area. They are recommended to be performed once a day.
Traditional medicine offers many recipes for eliminating bunions on the feet. Delving into the essence of this pathology, one can understand that traditional methods cannot correct bone deformation and can only be used in the initial stages of the disease to relieve inflammation, eliminate pain and normalize blood circulation in the area of the phalanges of the thumb. Before using any recipe, be sure to consult with an orthopedist and make sure there is no allergic reaction to the components of the folk remedy!
Infusion of iodine and dandelion flowers
Grind 100 g of fresh dandelion flowers and lightly dry. Pour iodine into the raw material until it covers it. Leave for 4-5 days. Steam your feet, dry them and apply the resulting solution onto the bone area. Such procedures are carried out daily for 14 days.
Baths in a solution of iodine and salt
Add 2 tablespoons of salt and 10 drops of iodine to a liter of warm water. Take baths for 15 minutes every day for a month. After the procedure, you can apply an iodine mesh.
Stretch a small piece of propolis with your fingers, apply it to the bone and secure with a bandage. Remove the bandage after 8 hours (it is better to do such applications at night). Perform the procedures daily for a month. If propolis is not available, you can use a pharmacy tincture and make wet compresses.
Add 5 crushed aspirin tablets to 10 ml of iodine solution and shake the contents of the bottle. Apply the resulting clear liquid to the bone once a day for three days in a row. Take a break for 3 days and then repeat lubrication with the same frequency for a month.
Compress of honey and cabbage leaves
This compress is best applied at night. Before going to bed, steam your feet in a warm bath, apply honey and cabbage leaf to the bone (the leaf needs to be slightly kneaded so that the juice comes out), secure with a bandage. In the morning, rinse off the remaining honey with warm water. The procedures are carried out over a month.
Bunions do not appear suddenly; it is a long and gradual process. Do not ignore the first signs of their appearance and consult a doctor promptly! Treatment for this disease should begin as early as possible. Early initiation of conservative therapy will allow you to stop the development of hallux valgus and surgery, prescribed at later stages of the curvature, may not be necessary.
If a “bone” appears on your leg, you should consult an orthopedist. If the doctor finds out that joint damage is caused by other reasons, he will refer the patient to a rheumatologist. Treatment assistance will be provided by a physiotherapist, physical therapy specialist, and nutritionist.
Many methods have been created for prevention, pain relief, treatment, and even surgical removal of “bones” on the legs. This article outlines one of the methods of traditional medicine to help feet in distress. A positive effect is possible with consistent complex treatment of “bones”. So, what needs to be done to get rid of “bones” on the legs:
1. Take herbal infusions internally.
2. Do gymnastics for your toes.
3. Take steam baths.
4. Use inter-finger spacers
5. Apply compresses and warm your feet.
6. Use orthopedic insoles.
7. Buy comfortable shoes.
When taking infusions, you need to be prepared to leave the body of everything that pollutes it. Kidney stones may even come out. For general cleansing of the body, you can use the roots of “Red Madder”:
• Grind the roots (you need a teaspoon of root per glass of water)
• Pour boiling water and place in a water bath for 15 minutes
• Cool and strain
Take half a glass before meals (evening and morning)
Gymnastics for toes
Exercises should be done while sitting and until your fingers become tired. For a general warm-up, you can use two simple exercises:
• Leaning on your heels, bend and straighten your toes
• Focus on the inside and outside of the fingers
The more varied the movements, the better the joints
A soda bath is suitable for softening joint tissues:
• Fill the basin with warm water
• Dilute salt, soda, liquid soap in it (a tablespoon of each)
• Place your feet in the basin and gradually add hot water
The feet will be steamed well for 20 minutes
Interdigital gel spacers
Corrective spacers must be inserted between the deformed fingers. Place them so that the wide part is located on the plantar side of the foot.
Compress with mandatory insulation
• Make your own ointment from bodyaga, dry mustard, machine oil (a tablespoon in total) and turpentine (two tablespoons)
• apply the ointment to a cotton swab wrapped in gauze and apply it to the “bones”
• bandage the foot so that the bandage does not fall off
• make warm soft slippers with ties and cellophane lining inside
It is better to do the procedure at night.
You can use a combined orthopedic silicone insole with a cushion and intertoe spacer “Combi Comforma”. Such insoles reduce pressure on the toes, eliminating painful sensations, and a soft spacer fixes the big toe in the desired position. This ensures a comfortable foot condition when walking.
Do the set of procedures for 2 weeks, every other day. Then take a break for 2 weeks and repeat the procedure. The pain will disappear immediately, and the bones will gradually decrease.
Warning: You may be allergic to the components, so test on your wrist before use. If the skin becomes inflamed, then you need to select other medicinal components.
We recommend a professional remedy for the treatment of bumps on the legs - Valufix?
The growth of a bunion in the area of the big toe is a fairly common pathology that causes inconvenience to many women.
But this disease can also be stopped if you start treating the disease at its first signs. There is a point of view that even with advanced forms, you can do without surgical intervention, thanks to traditional medicine.
From this article you will learn about what traditional methods of treating bunions are known.
When the bone grows, a decoction of madder is recommended, which helps normalize metabolism in the human body and removes excess uric acid. To do this, one teaspoon of madder roots is poured into one glass of hot water and boiled in a water bath for ten minutes. Then the broth must be cooled, strained and taken orally, half a glass, twice a day.
Yellow dandelion flowers will also help against harmful growths. One hundred grams of dandelion flowers need to be crushed and allowed to dry a little, then iodine is added to the medicinal raw material in such an amount that it covers the flowers. This product should be used after it has been infused for four days. The feet are thoroughly steamed, wiped dry, and then the resulting composition for the treatment of bunions is applied to it in the form of a mesh. This procedure is recommended to be carried out daily at night for two weeks.
Mustard, bodyaga, machine oil, turpentine.
Simultaneously with the use of madder decoction, it is recommended to lubricate the growing seeds with ointment prepared at home. To prepare such an ointment, you need to mix one tablespoon of mustard (dry), the same amount of bodyaga and machine oil, two tablespoons of turpentine. The sight and smell of such an ointment, of course, will not impress, but the treatment will be effective.
A good traditional medicine for reducing bunions on the feet would be burdock (burdock) and pharmaceutical turpentine. You need to grease a couple of large burdock leaves with turpentine (on the green side) and wrap them around part of the leg from the foot to the knee. Then, on top of the burdock, you need to wrap your leg in a plastic bag and wrap it in woolen fabric. The procedure should be carried out daily for three months. But when using such a compress, be careful so that your leg does not get burned when heated under it. This use of burdock leaves is recommended not only for the growth of seeds. A procedure carried out at least once every ten days will not only prevent diseases, but also normalize metabolism in the body. If turpentine causes particular discomfort, then it can be excluded.
Warm fifteen-minute baths will help relieve pain in the bones. To do this, dilute ten drops of iodine and two tablespoons of salt in one liter of water. Salt-iodine baths should be regular. To relieve pain, you can also lubricate the growth with iodine daily.
Five aspirin tablets are added to ten milligrams of iodine, and the mixture is shaken thoroughly. When aspirin dissolves, iodine becomes colorless; the resulting product is popularly called a “pharmacy cocktail”; it is recommended to lubricate growing bones at night. The procedure is performed for three days, after which a two-week break should follow - and again a three-day course.
Chicken egg, vinegar essence, turpentine, rendered lard
No less effective for the growth of bunions on the foot will be an ointment prepared in the following way: place a fresh egg (with a white shell) at the bottom of a faceted glass and fill it with vinegar essence, so that the egg is completely hidden. After which this composition must be placed in a dark place and allowed to stand for about two weeks - until the shell is completely dissolved. Then the shell of the dissolved egg is discarded, and ten grams of pharmaceutical turpentine and one tablespoon of rendered lard are added to the resulting composition (you can also use Vaseline, butter or store-bought fat). Everything is thoroughly mixed and the ointment is ready. Treatment methods should be alternated - lubricate the bone with this ointment one day, iodine the other day.
Compresses made from propolis will also be very effective. To do this, you need to soften the required piece of propolis with your hands and apply it to the growing bone overnight, securing it with a bandage. If propolis is not available, you can purchase its infusion at the pharmacy and make wet compresses.
