Laser removal of bunions is a fairly new direction in foot surgery, in particular the forefoot. Hallux Valgus disease has recently become inextricably linked on the Internet with the concept of laser removal of cones on the legs.
In this article I would like to explain what is meant by laser removal of bunions. What is a myth here and what is reality.
The use of a laser, namely a laser knife, is a myth because it is not suitable for this type of surgery, does not have any advantages, but there is a risk of damage to important structures of the foot. The use of laser as one of the types of physical therapy is possible, but it has nothing to do with the removal of bunions, since it only affects the inflamed soft tissues of bunions and does not affect the course of the disease in the future. After all, there are many other ways to relieve pain and swelling of an inflamed bone in the foot. It is enough to wear comfortable shoes for some time and the inflammatory process will stop on its own.
In a broad sense, laser removal of bunions means minimally invasive (through skin punctures rather than incisions) removal of exostosis of the head of the first metatarsal bone, as well as correction of incorrect position of the foot bones. For this purpose, special medical equipment is used, which allows all necessary manipulations to be performed through a 2-3 millimeter puncture of the skin. To use this technique, you need quite a lot of experience in foot surgery, since all manipulations are performed without eye control, with periodic X-ray control. Due to the absence of significant damage to soft tissues, wound healing and fusion of osteotomized bones occurs faster. It is interesting that in both English and German-language resources, minimally invasive interventions on the foot are also called laser removal of bunions. Apparently, this is due to the primary erroneous name of this technique, its attractive name and wide distribution on the Internet among patients and doctors.
Thanks to sufficient experience in using this technique in our clinic, we perform more than 90% of surgical interventions for deformities of the small toes and more than 50% of removals of bones on the feet only with laser. Healing and recovery occurs much faster. There is no need to talk about the benefits of the cosmetic effect, because skin punctures heal with a barely noticeable scar, which after 6-8 months becomes white and practically disappears. The only drawback of this technique is the impossibility of its use in advanced stages of the disease. The movement of osteotomized bones with severe deformities is significant and requires a more complete reconstruction of the foot, which can only be done through open surgery using special implants.
Therefore, it is extremely important to understand the importance of early seeking surgical help for transverse flatfoot. Numerous clinical studies in leading European foot surgery clinics have convincingly proven that this disease is not amenable to conservative treatment and only tends to increase deformity even when wearing first toe correctors or orthopedic insoles. These orthopedic products can only be used to prevent deformation if there is a tendency towards it. Only normalization of the axis of the first toe and the balance of all tendons acting on it will help get rid of bunions once and for all and ensure the absence of relapse of the disease.
Pathology hallux valgus (Hallux Valgus) is a valgus deviation of the first toe. The disease is significantly common, especially among women of working age who use uncomfortable dress shoes. The cause of the disease may be weakness of the ligamentous and muscular apparatus of the foot, increased physical activity, or hereditary predisposition. Factors that provoke the disease also include rheumatoid arthritis, neurogenic disorders, contracture of the calf muscle and Achilles tendon.
Treatment of Hallux Valgus should begin when the first symptoms of the disease appear - pain, redness, deformation of the forefoot. The patient complains of difficulty wearing ordinary shoes due to a “bump” formed at the base of the big toe. The rotation (deviation) of the 1st toe in relation to the 1st metatarsal bone is visually noted. Based on the angle of this deviation, the degree of deformation and the severity of pathological changes are assessed and treatment tactics are developed.
Conservative methods of treating hallux valgus are ineffective in most cases. They are used mainly to eliminate the symptoms of the disease, but do not eliminate the causes of its occurrence. These include the use of orthopedic insoles and shoes, orthoses, massage and exercise therapy of the lower leg muscles, and physiotherapeutic procedures to relieve pain.
The main way to get rid of the disease remains surgery to remove the bone on the leg. Its price depends on the treatment method used, the volume of surgical intervention, and the tariff policy of a particular medical center. Removing a bunion on the big toe involves intervention on soft tissues and bones. In this case, resection arthroplasty and osteotomy are most often performed on bone structures.
In most cases, hallux valgus surgery remains the only treatment for the disease. Surgical removal of bunions is less traumatic and allows for the elimination of severe foot deformities. Ideally, such surgical interventions provide relief from pain, restoration of normal functionality of the joints and a good aesthetic result.
Surgical intervention for hallux valgus lasts from 40 to 90 minutes. Its duration depends on the severity and stage of the disease. So, to remove a bone on the leg with 3-4 degrees of deformation (from 16° or more) requires more time than with changes of 1-2 degrees.
First, a comprehensive examination of the patient is carried out, and then the bone on the leg is removed. The price of the operation includes the cost of preoperative laboratory and instrumental studies. Removal of bunions is carried out after a clinical examination, assessment of the range of motion in the metatarsophalangeal joint and the elasticity of the foot. Usually, podography, rheovasography of the feet, and radiographic examination in several projections are performed.
The cost of surgery to remove a bunion also includes the patient’s postoperative hospital stay. A day after the operation, during the next dressing, orthopedic insoles are fixed to the foot with elastic bandages and the patient begins to be activated in special shoes. Bed rest and special exercises are required for 14 days. It is allowed to stand up and move strictly with arch supports and orthopedic shoes. A month later, a control x-ray is performed and the wearing of soft shoes with orthopedic insoles is allowed.
Not all patients are suitable for bunion removal surgery. Kyiv and its clinics must take into account the patient’s individual contraindications. As a rule, surgical treatment of hallux valgus is not recommended in the following cases:
Removing bunions with a laser is a new and little-known procedure. However, more and more Russian clinics are offering laser surgery for the treatment of hallux valgus. The growing popularity of this treatment method is associated with some advantages of laser surgery over traditional surgery.
In the early stages of hallux valgus, or simply put, a bunion at the base of the big toe, treatment can be conservative. Various insoles, other orthopedic devices, massage and special gymnastics are used. However, these measures are not effective enough for moderate and severe pathologies. In this situation, surgery cannot be avoided. Surgery knows many different methods for treating bunions on the feet, from removal, excision of the bones of the phalanges of the toe, to their complete removal, from alignment of the phalanges using special screws, to the complete formation of the transverse arch of the foot by retensioning the foot ligaments. The choice of method depends on the specific case. Surgery can be performed using either traditional surgery or a laser.
So, unlike the traditional one, laser removal of a bunion is performed under local anesthesia. It is carried out in a hospital and lasts no more than one hour. The patient is discharged one day after the operation. Moreover, you can operate on two legs at once. During laser intervention, the protruding bones of the phalanges of the fingers are polished using a laser device. With this removal of leg bones, a good cosmetic effect is achieved. No plaster or other corrective materials are required after such an operation. The patient can walk (with some restrictions) within a few hours after the operation.
After two weeks, a person can completely return to his usual lifestyle. To avoid relapses, the patient is observed by an orthopedist for some time after surgery.
Thus, the main advantages of laser bunion removal are the speed of the treatment itself and the relatively short recovery period while maintaining the proper effectiveness of the treatment.
Today, the average price for removing a bunion on one leg in Russian clinics is 35,000 rubles. Moreover, if you perform the operation on both legs at once, then such a bilateral intervention will cost you 50,000 rubles. Prices may vary in different clinics by an average of 10 thousand rubles across the country.
When dealing with bunions, remember that the sooner you start treatment, the more successful treatment, including laser treatment, can be.
Hallux valgus is a very common problem, especially among the female population. This disorder is accompanied by an increase and change in the shape of the metatarsal bone of the big toe, which leads to the formation of so-called bones.
Of course, such a phenomenon can hardly be considered a decoration of appearance. In addition, a person constantly faces discomfort and pain when walking. That is why many are interested in whether it is possible to remove bunions and how such a procedure occurs.
In most cases, the cause of bunion formation is an imbalance in the natural balance between the metatarsal bones of the first and fifth toes, as well as the heel. In this case, the main mass falls precisely on the bones of the thumb, which, accordingly, leads to their deformation.
Some people consider the bones to be the result of salt deposits, but this opinion is completely wrong. And at the same time, many modern studies confirm the fact that in such a disease there is a hereditary factor.
As for the displacement of the balance point, this is often caused by constantly wearing shoes with narrow toes or too high heels. In any case, the presence of such a deformation is not only perceived as a significant aesthetic drawback, but also causes the patient a lot of painful sensations.
If you notice the appearance of small tubercles on your thumb, you should immediately contact an experienced orthopedic doctor. Under no circumstances should you self-medicate, as at best it will not give any results, and at worst, it will further aggravate the situation.
In the early stages of deformity, conservative methods are used - these are manual therapy, massages, wearing special bandages, prostheses and special orthopedic shoes. In more severe cases, surgery is required. Laser removal of bunions is considered the most effective today.
It is immediately worth noting that surgical intervention is indicated only in cases of truly severe deformities. Today, laser removal of bunions is just beginning to gain popularity. However, this technique has a number of advantages.
If traditional surgery involves partial excision of the metatarsal bone, then with laser correction using a beam, the surface is simply polished. In addition, the procedure is carried out under local anesthesia, which makes it possible to correct the feet even in elderly patients.
As a rule, after a few hours the patient can try to walk, and after a day he is discharged from the hospital. During the rehabilitation period, plaster casts are not needed. By the way, full recovery occurs 2 – 3 weeks after the procedure. Naturally, after the operation, the patient must be observed for some time by an orthopedist and follow all the recommendations and rules that the specialist establishes.
In fact, many doctors recommend laser removal of bunions to patients - reviews of this method are positive. In most cases, the result of the procedure is beautiful, graceful feet without ugly bunions and constant pain when walking.
However, it is worth understanding that the experience and skill of the surgeon is of great importance in this case, since this technique is still relatively new. And, unfortunately, the risk of new deformations in the future cannot be ruled out.

Hello, I am interested in the cost of removing a bunion using a laser.
The bone on my foot is very disturbing. Is it possible to perform surgery using a laser? Help me please.
Hello! I will turn 62 in June. Working. Problem with a bunion on my left big toe. The one on the right is just starting to grow. Because of the bunion, I can’t put on my shoes normally. I can’t afford beautiful outfits because they require beautiful shoes. And shoes are usually suitable for normal feet. With my bone, it is almost impossible to buy beautiful shoes. Question - can I hope for laser removal of bones?
I have long wanted to deal with the problem of a bunion on my legs. My grandmother and mother had it, and now I am suffering. I have bunions on 2 legs. Can you tell me the approximate cost of laser removal?
I had surgery to remove bunions on my feet with a laser in Kyiv. The truly cosmetic effect exceeds all expectations. Where the bone was crossed with a laser, only dots remain, not scars. Unfortunately, everything can be done with a laser only in the initial stage, so you should not delay contacting specialists. Only this is not a laser, as in science fiction films, but intersections of bones through punctures, and the skin is not completely cut. They cross the bone with some instrument and change its position. But even so everything went fine, I wore Baruka shoes for 4 weeks. Thank God, I didn’t break anything. Now I’m happy, I walk without pain and I understand what happiness it is.
This publication will focus on the topic of “bones” of the legs, widely known in narrow circles, they are also “gout”, they are also “bumps”, they are also hallux valgus. The last definition is the correct orthopedic term. And we will try to understand the seemingly “simple” question: – Is it worth “deleting” them?
It would seem that everything is not complicated - there is a diagnosis, there is a visible problem, which means there are indications for surgery. But everything is not as simple as it seems. I would break the consideration of this task into several stages.
1. The presence of complaints from the patient himself (not to be confused with recommendations from friends and relatives, for example: “You have this (!), but you do nothing”)…
Complaints include: pain in the feet during and after exercise, the presence of deformations that make it difficult to select and wear shoes, uneven wear of shoes, the presence of painful “bones,” corns and calluses, as well as long-term non-healing wounds in their area.
2. Diagnosis directly by a specialist, indicating the type and degree of deformation. That is, determining the medical indications for surgery, if they exist at all. A dialogue with an orthopedist like: “It seems to me that none of my friends have bones (or, alternatively, wide feet) like mine, and they tell me...” is not sufficient to justify the need for surgery! Indeed, nowadays foot surgery has undergone a serious transformation, and the need for surgeon intervention is calculated mathematically after measuring the main and secondary angles of inclination and the lengths of the foot bones.
1. Detailing the scope of the operation itself. If not long ago orthopedists could offer an operation to reduce or remove the “bone” itself, now it is quite possible to simultaneously eliminate a number of problems: “bones”, corns, painful calluses of the fingers, correction of finger deformities, etc.
2. Surgery on only one or simultaneously on both feet. Currently, surgery on both feet, if indicated, has become the rule, but there are situations when this is impossible and the second foot is operated on after 3-6 months.
So, let’s say, we have decided on the need for the operation itself and its volume. At this stage, the patient has a number of questions. Let's try to answer them.
1. Under what anesthesia, and possibly general anesthesia, is the operation performed? In most cases, surgery can be performed under conduction or local anesthesia. This is a modern, adequate type of anesthesia, which allows you to make the operation painless, with minimal consequences for the body. Anesthesia is possible and is offered to those who cannot tune in to the “effect of presence” in the operating room.
2. What about the cast and how long to walk with crutches? I can reassure you - I am canceling the cast and “walking through pain” with crutches! This is not a joke, but the reality of today. Modern foot surgery makes it possible to do without these archaisms. Currently, “advanced” orthopedists use titanium microimplants - Herbert or Baruk type screws, microplates with angular stability, etc., which reliably hold the bones of the foot without the use of plaster casts, even under conditions of vertical loads and walking without crutches.
3. When can you walk? – Usually the next day.
4. How many days after surgery do I need to stay in the hospital? – Usually 2 days.
5. Is surgery possible without hospitalization? – Sometimes possible, with small volumes of intervention.
6. What can you actually walk in, is it really ordinary shoes? – Fortunately, these are not plaster, but also not dress shoes, but rather comfortable Baruk shoes, reminiscent of summer shoes with Velcro, with the option of transformation for the winter-autumn period.
7. How long should you walk in Baruk’s shoes? – 4-5 weeks are enough, followed by a transition to regular shoes with a small heel.
8. When you can take a shower, bath, massage, orthopedic insoles, period of incapacity and a number of other issues are resolved individually with the orthopedic surgeon who will operate on you.
9. What determines the cost of the operation? – First of all, from the manufacturer of implants (brand) and their quantity.
10. Does surgery on one foot cost half as much as on two? - And here is a mistake. If necessary, it is more profitable to operate on both feet at the same time, since it is no more than 1.5 times more expensive.
11. How likely is a relapse? “My neighbor had this operation, but a few years later she developed the same lump”... - The probability of relapse with the modern approach is significantly reduced and is no more than 10%. In recent years, approaches to methods for correcting foot deformities have been revised. That is, no one removes the “bones,” “bumps,” etc. The point of the operation is that the bones are set in their places while simultaneously preventing possible displacements due to changes in the traction of muscles and tendons. However, the possibility of failure exists when the operation is undertaken by those who are not trained in the field of foot surgery. The topic of surgical treatment of “bumps” has recently been popularized on the Internet and on television. Patients turn to traumatologists, surgeons, and orthopedists whose qualifications there was no reason to doubt before. But, if the doctor has not had special training in foot surgery for the last 5-7 years and operates on less than 50 feet per year, there is a possibility that he is underqualified. It's not difficult to check. Ask what your operation will be called (a whole line of operations invented at the dawn of foot surgery are important as history and are not used now: Keller Brandes operation - 1905 (!), Shede-Logroshino - 1948, Boycheva, Kramarenko, Vreden..., but not yet safe home-grown methods), does she intend to correct all problems with the feet (toe calluses, corns, deformities of the fingers) or only remove the “bump”, as the surgeon Shede did 120 years ago, ask to give you several telephone numbers of those who operated on him earlier, and after communication decide for yourself.
12. Is titanium implants necessary for life? – No, the point is to keep them in the feet for 6-10 months. Subsequently, the fixation function is lost and the screws can be removed, but not necessarily, since there is no tissue reaction to titanium.
13. Who should not undergo such operations? The number of contraindications is not large, but they still need to be mentioned:
a) severe diabetes mellitus;
b) 3rd degree obesity;
d) thrombophlebitis of the vessels of the lower extremities;
14. Up to what age is foot surgery possible? If there are indications and no contraindications, there are no age restrictions.
15. What is the period of disability after surgery? It depends on the type of work, the complexity of the operation, and the motivation for speedy rehabilitation of the patient. For example, in my practice there was a case when a patient, afraid of losing her job as a supermarket saleswoman, 3 weeks after the operation worked 12 hours a day, on her feet all day, but fortunately, in Baruk’s shoes, which she admitted later. The result, by the way, was wonderful. And yet, the rehabilitation period is usually 1-1.5 months.
16. Will there be scars after the operation? – The so-called postoperative scars are very small and are visible during the first few months, and after six months they are barely visible.
17. How is the pain syndrome? “A friend of mine had surgery. Their legs have become beautiful, but they hurt a lot”... – Very often my patients agree to surgery not because of cosmetic defects, but because of pain in the legs, which goes away after the normal anatomy of the feet is restored.
18. At what time of year should the operation be performed? - Anything. It is more important that this is a convenient period of life for you, and devote 1-1.5 months of the postoperative period to your own rehabilitation without force majeure at work, in business, etc. There are exceptions to the rule, such as patients with rheumatoid arthritis, who often present with foot problems. In these cases, periods of seasonal exacerbation should be avoided.
Modern operations to correct orthopedic deformities of the foot have revolutionized orthopedics due to significantly improved results, the possibility of early loading, a short period of hospital stay (1-2 days), the absence of such “charms” as plaster and crutches, and of course good early and long-term results. The validity of the operation depends on the patient’s specific complaints and the presence of medical indications based on the results of an orthopedic examination, plantoscopy and X-ray evaluation. The planning of the operation is always individual and includes the correction of all types of foot deformities (“bunions”, crooked little toes, corns, calluses, etc.). You should not insist on surgery for cosmetic reasons. The main point of the operation is to correct the altered anatomy of the feet, which not only corrects the feet externally, but also relieves patients from pain. The rehabilitation period ranges from 3 weeks to 1.5 months. Contraindications to surgery are diabetes mellitus, grade 3 obesity, smoking, and thrombophlebitis.

Scientists have not been able to uncover all the reasons, but they suggest that this disorder can be transmitted genetically. It is an undeniable fact that wearing uncomfortable shoes greatly affects the appearance of bumps. In regions where people walk barefoot, this deviation practically does not occur. But high heels and narrow-toed shoes provoke the disease. The most common causes of these deformities are:
How can you cure a bunion on your foot?
Depending on the cause that caused the appearance of bunions, the treatment method is determined: conservative or surgical. Conservative treatment methods:
Conservative methods are effective only in the early stages of bunion development, when the foot bone has not yet changed its position. Surgery is required to remove the bone. Surgery carries many risks, so it is not suitable for everyone. When is the operation performed:
There are several types of surgery. The choice of method depends on the stage of the disease and its course. Simple bunionectomy During the operation, only the bunion is removed. This is only possible when the toe is still straight and there is no deformation of the foot bone. Brittle bone bunionectomy To straighten the finger and remove the bunion, the surgeon has to break the bone. After the lump is removed, the bone parts are put back together. Recovery after this procedure takes a long time, but the finger straightens out and with proper care the lump no longer grows. Keller bunionectomy Surgeons try to avoid this operation; after it, a person will no longer be able to lead an active lifestyle, and the mobility of the leg will be limited. During surgery, part of the bone of the thumb or the entire joint is removed. After the operation, you will have to wear special shoes or splints that will control the position of the bones. To prevent the lump from appearing again, you need to avoid high-heeled shoes and those with pointed fronts. It's best to take care of your feet in advance, before bunions or bunions begin to complicate your life. Comfortable shoes can be beautiful and stylish, choose them.
