Its origin is unclear. His mother was considered the goddess Cybele, and his father was the river god Eager from Thrace; but sometimes the father of Marsyas was called the musician Giagnus from the retinue of Cybele or the inventor of the flute of Olympus (who, again, is sometimes considered a friend or even the son of Marsyas). But in this case it is not so important. What is more important is that Marsyas had the imprudence to pick up the flute, which Athena had thrown away and cursed because playing it distorted her face. Marsyas quickly mastered this instrument, everyone praised his skill, and he became so proud that he considered himself able to compete in musical art with Apollo himself, an unsurpassed master of playing the lyre. Apollo accepted the challenge, but Marsyas’s insolence offended him, and he made it a condition that the winner has the right to skin the loser alive. Of course, Apollo won, and Marsyas literally “paid with his skin”: the angry god hung him on a tree and skinned him alive (according to another version, this was not done by himself, but on his orders). The friends of the unfortunate Marcia could only mourn him. From their tears, soaked into the ground, a source arose that gave rise to the river of the same name in Phrygia.
