      Edema during pregnancy: how to get rid of it

      When edema in a pregnant woman is dangerous

      It is completely normal for pregnant women to have swelling in their feet and ankles. This is due to the body’s increased need for fluid, as a result of which the pregnant woman experiences constant thirst and drinks a lot of water. Swelling of the legs, which is not dangerous, is mainly observed in the evening and disappears overnight.

      Abnormalities include swelling of the fingers and face, as well as persistent swelling in the legs that does not go away in the morning. Such symptoms should cause alarm, since they may be a sign of gestosis, a pregnancy complication that is dangerous both for the fetus and for the woman herself. At the initial stage of gestosis, in addition to edema, there is excessive weight gain, constant fatigue, and weakness.

      Swelling in a pregnant woman that appears at the 20th week should be the reason for examination by a doctor. Preeclampsia is not necessarily to blame for everything, but during the period of waiting for a child, it is better to be safe than sorry.

      Herbal infusions for edema in a pregnant woman

      During pregnancy, they drink infusions that have a diuretic effect, but their use is possible only with the permission of a doctor. Among the most popular recipes are the following:

    • pour 2 tbsp. l. birch leaves 0.5 liters of boiling water. Leave for 1.5 hours. Drink a third of a glass;
    • pour 1 tbsp. l. bearberry leaves 200 ml boiling water. Leave for 2 hours. Take 1 tbsp. l.;
    • pour 3 tbsp. l. roots and leaves of sageweed 0.5 liters of boiling water. Leave for 1.5-2 hours. Drink warm, 0.5 cups.
    • All infusions should be consumed three times a day before meals.

      General recommendations for edema during pregnancy

      Since there is no escape from edema during pregnancy, you should follow some rules that will help alleviate the condition:

      1. Move more. Pregnant women benefit from walks in the fresh air and simple but regular exercise.
      2. Take care of your feet. Since it is the legs that swell most often, the main attention should be paid to them. You should take baths with sea salt and massage your feet with a washcloth.
      3. Drink as much as you want. Pregnant women are recommended to drink about 3 liters of water per day. Limiting the amount of liquid you drink will not relieve swelling, but will cause the opposite effect: the body will become “scared” and begin to retain as much water as possible.
      4. Lying down is beneficial. Should be 15-20 minutes daily. lie with your legs elevated.
      5. Wear tights. Before getting out of bed in the morning, you need to put on high-waisted tights. This will help ensure that blood does not stagnate in the area of the feet.
      6. Eat properly. A pregnant woman’s diet must be discussed with a doctor. But among the general tips, one can highlight the limitation on excessive amounts of salt and sugar in dishes.
      7. Think about comfort. A pregnant woman should wear comfortable shoes and not stay in the heat for too long.

      If changing your diet does not help, then the swelling has much more serious causes than you would like to think. Constant swelling should be a reason to consult a doctor. Perhaps they are hiding a serious illness. You shouldn't joke with your own health.

      How to reduce venous edema

      People who suffer from varicose veins often experience swelling of the lower extremities. According to statistics from world phlebologists, in patients with varicose veins, permanent (chronic) venous edema was detected in 20% of women and 10% of men.

      Such chronic venous edema is a consequence of the occurrence of chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). Swelling of the legs worsens a person's quality of life. In addition, constant swelling can lead to serious complications (trophic skin disorders, lymphostasis).

      How to get rid of swelling of the legs - reducing edema syndrome? Surgical intervention during periods of severe swelling is unacceptable. If you were planning an operation to remove varicose veins or phlebosclerosing treatment, then such procedures are carried out only after the edema syndrome has been eliminated.

      To get rid of swelling of the legs, you need to take a set of measures aimed at eliminating them.

      1. Diet. Limiting fatty, spicy foods.
      2. Physiotherapy. Performing special exercises has a beneficial effect on reducing venous edema. While resting, try to keep your legs elevated at all times.
      3. Wear only comfortable shoes and clothing. Avoid tight (tight) clothes. Avoid high-heeled shoes.
      4. Wearing compression stockings. People with CVI need to realize that constantly wearing compression garments is the best prevention and treatment of varicose veins, thrombosis, and thrombophlebitis. Therapeutic knitwear correctly distributes pressure on the vessels throughout the entire limb, which leads to a decrease in blood stagnation in the veins and a decrease in swelling of the limb.
      5. Pharmacotherapy. The use of medications to relieve swelling (medicinal ointments, gels, tablets). Taking medications is one of the important measures in the treatment of chronic venous edema of the legs.
      6. Numerous studies of patients with venous edema have shown a significant reduction in edema when taking medications. The leaders among such drugs are Detralex and Phlebodia 600. After taking these drugs (1-2 months), the severity of edema significantly decreases. In addition, pain begins to bother you much less.

        If you find that your legs are constantly swelling, you should immediately consult a doctor. It is necessary to find out the reasons for the appearance of such edema. Advanced stages of diseases that cause swelling of the lower extremities take years to treat, and sometimes become a problem for life.
