Of course, DPT vaccination is a necessary thing. After all, diseases such as tetanus, diphtheria, whooping cough are extremely dangerous and can have irreversible consequences. Actually, this is why children under the age of fourteen are given the DPT vaccine 6 times.
However, we cannot deny the possibility of adverse reactions occurring after vaccination, which is why many parents refuse to vaccinate their child against these deadly diseases. In particular, you can often hear complaints that after DTP vaccination the child’s leg hurts, he limps and cries. Is this phenomenon considered a typical side effect, and what to do in such cases, let's find out.
Pain in the leg after vaccination: normal or a real threat?
Experienced mothers know that DTP is one of the most poorly tolerated vaccinations, and pediatricians are probably already accustomed to complaints from parents that after the child received the DPT vaccine, his leg hurts a lot, he limps, and swelling appears at the injection site and the temperature has risen.
Indeed, slight redness, swelling (sometimes more than 8 cm in diameter), pain - all these phenomena are considered local complications that do not go beyond normal limits. In this way, the baby’s body reacts to the administered substance; in addition, such a reaction indicates that the process of immunity formation has begun.
Typically, pain, swelling and inflammation should subside within a few days. However, during this difficult period for the baby, it is very important that the mother remains calm and tries to alleviate his condition. You can relieve painful symptoms with massage, special compresses (except alcohol), and ointments. Any medications should be used with caution and only after consulting a doctor. Under no circumstances should parents escalate the situation; an already worried baby will quickly “catch” mommy’s mood and become even more capricious.
By the way, it is worth noting that parents most often turn to doctors with complaints that the child’s leg hurts after the 3rd revaccination of the DPT vaccine.
All children know about the “button”, because they are tested for the Mantoux reaction every year. Tuberculosis is a dangerous and very common disease, which is why it is so important to monitor residual immunity after a BCG vaccination given in the maternity hospital, and, if necessary, carry out revaccination.
Adenoiditis is usually called inflammation of adenoid vegetations, which often occurs against the background of infectious diseases. If the problem is ignored, the disease can progress to a severe stage, so it is extremely important to monitor the growth of adenoids and treat exacerbations.
Fever is a common condition after vaccination, because it is a protective reaction of the body, which at this time is developing immunity to the disease for which the vaccination was carried out. Let's take a closer look at this topic.
Poliomyelitis is a terrible disease that cannot be effectively treated, so the only preventative measure is to vaccinate the child. This issue has become especially relevant recently, when the disease is being recorded again in some regions of the country.

Tetanus shot, tetanus shot, but I By the way, why is it that only men have an Adam’s apple (Adam’s apple), is that the structure of the larynx is completely different? Why is it called Adam's apple? The Adam's apple is cartilage, which is more pronounced in men due to the influence of male sex hormones during puberty. It is a secondary sexual characteristic. It is no different in structure from the female one. Probably this gland is more developed in them, in general, yes))) That is why they take lower notes in conversation. This is not the larynx, but the thyroid gland. And the shape is this way because of the low voices of men. Well, it changes with puberty - like the testicles from the abdominal cavity drop where they should with age - and the larynx bends as it should 🙂 (it turns out to be an Adam's apple). Men mutate like that 🙂 and men generally have a different structure. They have square eye sockets in their skulls, while women have round ones. Feel it sometime. It’s true, it’s just that when Eve gave Adam an apple (and he had already begun to eat it) and said that he was waiting for them for it, he choked. By the way, it also happens to women, but this is a pathology. My aunt has it, the doctors said if it doesn’t bother her, then let it be. Everyone has an Adam's apple, just because women have it smaller. According to the Bible, Adam took a bite of the forbidden fruit (apple) and when Jesus found out about it, a piece of this apple stood in Adam's throat - and that's how men's Adam's apple appeared

The DPT vaccine protects the child from such deadly diseases as tetanus, whooping cough, and diphtheria. However, many parents are afraid to undergo such vaccination, since a large number of children often experience adverse reactions. What should you do if your child’s leg is swollen after vaccination? First of all, calm down and don't panic. The DTP vaccine sometimes leads to such a reaction in the body. To make sure that the baby’s health and life are not in danger, consult your pediatrician. For vaccination to be effective, vaccination must be carried out comprehensively - 3 injections with a break of 1.5 -2 months. The fourth DPT can be done only after 12 months.
The vaccination calendar looks something like this:
It is not at all necessary to get all DPT vaccinations. However, if you want to protect your child from fatal diseases, it is recommended that you follow this schedule.
Any vaccination, including DPT, causes adverse reactions in the child’s body. Each parent decides independently whether their child needs to be vaccinated. Yes, the baby will not feel very well for some time, but will receive reliable protection from very dangerous ailments. To ensure that a side effect does not come as a surprise to you, find out in advance about possible options for the development of the situation.
So, the normal reaction of a child’s body to the DPT vaccine:
Adverse reactions, as a rule, occur immediately after vaccination or on the first day. If alarming symptoms were detected after 4-5 days, they are in no way related to the vaccine. To find out the cause of your discomfort, consult your doctor.
The child often cries after vaccination
DPT vaccination is very difficult and painful. For children under 1.5 years old, the injection is given in the leg, since there is less fatty tissue in this part of the body than in the buttocks, and the vaccine is absorbed more quickly by the body. The injection site may become swollen, red, and painful when touched.
Such a reaction of the body is considered acceptable if the child’s body temperature is not higher than 38 C. The thing is that aluminum hydroxide is introduced into the muscle tissue, which contributes to the development of immunity to the disease, but causes a painful reaction. The suspension is stored locally, at the injection site, and immune cells are sent to the site of irritation and inflammation. The diameter of the redness at the vaccination site should not exceed 5 cm. If the tumor increases and the baby constantly cries, it means that a complication is developing. In this case, you should immediately contact your pediatrician.
Size of edema after DTP
Swelling after DPT vaccination appears in most cases. Doctors consider this reaction of the body to be quite normal. This means that the vaccine works and the child’s immunity is strengthened. Young mothers should be prepared for the fact that after vaccination, not only the baby’s leg may swell, but also the temperature will rise, general weakness and drowsiness will appear.
Unpleasant symptoms do not last long at all - 1-2 hours. However, the child endures this period of time quite hard - he is constantly capricious and cries. You can ease your baby’s suffering without much effort at home.
To do this, use one of the methods below.
To save your child from unnecessary stress, you can give him a painkiller tablet in advance, even before vaccination. Such insurance is not prohibited, and is even recommended by most doctors. Discuss any methods of treating your child in advance with the pediatrician and proceed with procedures only after his approval.
A child is vaccinated with DPT
Before you make a final decision about whether your child needs DPT vaccination, make sure that your baby has no contraindications to such a procedure.
These vaccinations are not recommended if:
DTP vaccination has good analogues. If your doctor tells you not to take this vaccine, ask him if you can replace it with Pentaxim or Infanrix. If you want your child to not have a swollen leg after DTP vaccination, be sure to properly prepare him for this procedure. For 6 days (3 days before and 3 days after vaccination), give your baby ? parts of a Cetrin or Suprastin tablet, 3 times a day. Taking antihistamines will help significantly reduce adverse reactions from vaccination. Before giving your baby any medications, be sure to consult your pediatrician.

Every child is required to get the DPT vaccine; it helps them build immunity against dangerous viruses: whooping cough, diphtheria, tetanus. In different countries, DPT is a routine vaccination that protects against dangerous diseases. Of course, no one can force parents to vaccinate their child, but everyone should understand that if he refuses immunization, responsibility for the child’s life will rest with him.
The injection is given in the leg; DTP cannot be given in the gluteal muscles, because the drug will not work through the layer of fat. In addition, the infiltrate will take a long time to dissolve, thus reducing the effectiveness of vaccination. It is also forbidden to give an injection in the buttocks, because the sciatic nerve is in this place; it must not be damaged under any circumstances, otherwise motor activity may be impaired.
Attention! Children under 1.5 years old are vaccinated in the leg, and older ones only in the arm (deltoid brachialis). The teenager is allowed to inject under the shoulder blade. According to the schedule, up to 2 years you need to get 4 vaccinations. Then, before school and at the age of 14, revaccination is carried out.
Most parents panic very much when, after an injection, the body temperature rises sharply, the leg swells, hurts, and digestive upset occurs. How dangerous are complications after vaccination? It is important to understand that there is currently no drug to which the body does not react. Even if you introduce pure distilled water, a reaction cannot be avoided.
Normal reactions after DPT include:
The reaction to DTP can have 3 degrees of severity, it all depends on how the body temperature rises:
In case of a strong reaction, the next vaccine is given without the pertussis component; it is this that is difficult to tolerate. If pathological changes are observed on days 4–5, the child must be examined urgently.
Unfortunately, DTP is considered a difficult vaccination, and not all children can safely tolerate it. In addition to general ailments and changes in behavior, there may be severe local reactions in the place where the injection was given:
Please note that pain with induration is considered normal if the temperature is not higher than 38 degrees. The pain appears due to the fact that aluminum hydroxide enters the muscle; it is responsible for the immune response. This compound helps to keep the suspension in the place where it was introduced for a long time.
A reaction is considered normal when the injection site swells and turns red, while the child can calmly stand on his leg, does not act up, does not cry. The inflammatory process should not spread more than 5 cm. When the inflammatory area increases significantly, the child cannot walk and begins to limp - this is a complicated reaction.
Attention! It is forbidden to get rid of swelling and pain in the leg on your own. All procedures are agreed upon with the pediatrician.
Please note that when the baby begins to limp and pulls his leg, this means that the resorption of the infiltrate is happening too slowly. Swelling, pain and redness are common reactions. To restore motor function, you need to do a special massage.
How long can a child limp after vaccination? Usually after a week, lameness disappears, and the infiltrate is absorbed into the body tissue. If the swelling is too strong and the leg is hot, you need to urgently consult a surgeon. Perhaps he will prescribe a special medicinal ointment (often Fenistil gel), a special compress.
If a child is afraid to stand on his leg, constantly lies down, and complains of unbearable pain, you can lubricate the area with Troxevasin. Some inexperienced nurses, instead of injecting the suspension into the muscle, inject it under the skin. There is a lot of fat under the skin, but there are practically no blood vessels, so the infiltrate begins to be slowly absorbed. The pain will continue until the suspension begins to dissolve. What to do? Consult your pediatrician, maybe he will prescribe an ointment - Aescusan, it improves blood circulation and helps the drug to be absorbed faster.
Rarely, an infection can occur during vaccination. This happens when sanitary and hygienic standards are violated during the injection, as well as after mechanical impact on the injection site. In this situation, the wound begins to bleed heavily and fester. The child cannot stand on his feet at all and does not want to walk. You can’t hesitate, you need to immediately show the baby to the surgeon, who will clean the wound of pus. If this is not done in a timely manner, everything will end in an abscess.
Does your leg hurt a lot after DTP? Is your baby constantly crying? Give a pain reliever, such as Nurofen. You cannot torture a child and force him to endure pain; also be sure to bring down the high temperature. After vaccination, your first aid kit at home should have: antiallergic, pain reliever and antipyretic.
What is the conclusion? The reaction to vaccination is considered normal, thus forming an immune response to the introduction of bacteria. For some children it is unnoticeable, but for others it is very difficult. It is acceptable if the injection site swells a little and a lump appears. During the first days, the child may cry from pain, pull his leg, and sometimes even refuse to stand on it. No need to panic! Your doctor will usually warn you about these side effects. You need to urgently call an ambulance and go to the hospital if the temperature has risen sharply, the child is screaming loudly, the leg is very hot and red, and the injection site is festering. Here you cannot do without medical help. In other cases, all unpleasant symptoms disappear on day 4 or a little earlier. Despite a number of side effects, you should not refuse the vaccine; infections can cause much more harm!
DPT vaccination is most often discussed by parents of children. Hundreds of thousands of mothers and fathers speak out for and against this vaccination on numerous Internet platforms. Some tell scary stories about how a child with a high fever suffered a vaccination, others say that they did not notice any reaction at all in their child to the administration of a biological drug.
DTP has its opponents and supporters, and quite often the question is raised whether it is necessary to do DTP at all. On this topic, quite often it is necessary to give a qualified answer to Evgeniy Komarovsky, a pediatrician of the highest category, well-known throughout Russia and the former CIS countries.
The DPT vaccination is one of the very first in a child’s life; it is done at an early age, and therefore the very fact of this vaccination raises many questions and doubts among parents of infants. The name of the vaccine consists of the first letters of the names of the three most dangerous infectious diseases for children - whooping cough (K), diphtheria (D) and tetanus (C). The letter A in the acronym stands for “adsorbed.” In other words, the vaccine contains the maximum amount of active substances obtained by adsorption (when a high concentration is achieved from a gas or liquid on the surface of contact of two media).
Thus, the adsorbed pertussis-diphtheria-tetanus vaccine (DTP) is designed to stimulate the production of specific antibodies to the listed infections in the baby’s body. The immune system will “get to know” the microbes that cause whooping cough, diphtheria and tetanus, and in the future, if such pests enter the body, it will be able to quickly identify, recognize and destroy them.
DTP includes several types of biological material:
Diphtheria and tetanus toxoids are included in the drug because it is not so much the causative agents of these diseases that are scary for a child, but rather their toxins, which begin to be produced as soon as the microbes are activated in the child’s body. Dead pertussis bacilli are the most active component of the drug; it is to this that children often experience a reaction after vaccination.
DTP is included in the National Vaccination Calendar, which implies certain vaccination dates, which Dr. Komarovsky strongly advises against violating. Children do it three times. The first time is when the baby reaches three months of age. Then at 4.5 months and six months. If the first vaccination for some reason did not take place (the child was sick, a quarantine was declared for influenza or ARVI), then they begin to vaccinate him from now on, strictly observing the interval between vaccinations from 30 to 45 days).
Revaccination should take place one year after the third administration. If the baby goes according to schedule, then at one and a half years, but if he received the first vaccination later than the due date, then 12 months after the third vaccination.
The child will have to face DPT at the age of seven, and then at the age of 14, these will be one-time booster vaccinations necessary to ensure that the level of antibodies to tetanus and diphtheria is maintained at the proper level.
Children who are already 4 years old, as well as older children, if necessary, are given an ADS vaccine that is devoid of killed pertussis germs. Children who have already had whooping cough will be vaccinated with the same vaccine.
DPT can be combined with other vaccinations prescribed for the baby according to the National Calendar. However, simultaneous administration with BCG is not allowed (this vaccination must be done separately).
For children, DTP is injected intramuscularly into the thigh, for older children - into the shoulder. Until the age of 4 years, a child must receive 4 vaccinations.
Evgeny Komarovsky advises worried and doubtful parents to carefully read the issue, and advises those who are against vaccination in general to reconsider their views. Because DPT, according to the doctor, is a highly effective way to protect the baby from diseases dangerous to his health and the only reasonable choice for mothers and fathers.
In this video episode, Dr. Komarovsky will tell us everything he thinks about the need for DTP vaccination
Like any prevention, vaccination with adsorbed pertussis-diphtheria-tetanus vaccine requires some preparation and parental readiness for possible problems. However, they are completely surmountable, Komarovsky emphasizes, if you follow a certain algorithm of actions.
First of all, parents should be aware of which manufacturer’s vaccine their child will be vaccinated with. Today there are many such drugs, they have their pros and cons, but there are no frankly bad vaccines on the pharmaceutical market at the moment. Parents are in no way able to influence the choice of vaccine, since the drug is delivered centrally to clinics. DTP vaccination, which is given free of charge.
Now let’s listen to Dr. Komarovsky on the topic of complications after vaccinations
However, mothers and fathers can go the other way and ask the pediatrician to vaccinate the baby with Tetracok and Infanrix; these drugs are expensive, and such vaccination is done exclusively at the expense of the parents. Komarovsky, based on personal experience, claims that there are many children who get whooping cough after a timely DTP. However, in his practice, there were only isolated cases of this disease in children vaccinated with Infanrix or Tetrakok.
The reaction to Tetrakok is sometimes stronger than after DPT. Infanrix is much better tolerated by most children. Komarovsky does not exclude the use of Pentaxim; additional biological products against polio have been introduced into the composition of this vaccine.
At the time of vaccination, the child must be completely healthy. It is for this reason that the baby is always examined by a pediatrician before the injection. But the doctor sees your child less often and less than the parents, and therefore careful observations of the child’s condition by mom and dad will help the doctor decide whether the right time has come to administer the vaccine.
And here is the actual video where Dr. Komarovsky will tell you when you can’t get vaccinated
You cannot vaccinate with DTP if your child has signs of acute respiratory viral infection, runny nose, cough, or has an elevated body temperature. If the baby has previously had seizures that are in no way related to high fever, the vaccine cannot be given. If the previous procedure caused a severe allergic reaction or a high temperature (over 40.0) in the little one, Komarovsky also advises refraining from DTP vaccination. With great caution, the doctor should decide to vaccinate a baby whose medical record contains notes about the presence of serious immune diseases.
If the baby has had a runny nose for a long time, but the appetite is excellent and there are no other symptoms of the disease, Komarovsky is confident that rhinitis in this case will not be a contraindication for vaccination.
If the time has come to get a vaccine injection, and the child is teething with all his might, and his condition is far from perfect, he can be vaccinated. There is only one limitation - high temperature. In this case, the procedure is postponed for some time until the baby’s condition becomes stable. If there is no fever, then AFSD will not harm the baby, who is soon planning to get his first teeth.
Evgeniy Komarovsky emphasizes that it is the parents who should assess the baby’s condition in the first place, and if doubts arise, be sure to tell the doctor about them at the next appointment.
It is advisable to do a general blood test a few days before the expected date of vaccination. The results of such a study will help the pediatrician understand whether everything is okay with the baby.
Komarovsky advises children with allergic dermatitis to do DTP only after no new skin rashes have appeared for 21 days. First, a child prone to severe allergies can be given an antihistamine, the name of which and the exact dosage should be prescribed by a pediatrician. Self-dealing in this matter is unforgivable. However, Evgeniy Olegovich advises not to take Suprastin and Tavegil, since these medications “dry” the mucous membranes, and this is fraught with complications after an injection on the respiratory tract.
Monitor your child's bowel movements. The day before the vaccination, on the day and the next day, the baby should walk large so that the intestines are not overloaded. This helps the baby to survive DPT more easily. If there was no stool, you can do an enema a day before going to the clinic or give your child age-appropriate laxatives.
It will be better if the mother reduces the amount of food during these three days, reduces its calorie content and does not overfeed the child. For bottle-fed babies, Komarovsky recommends diluting the dry formula in a concentration lower than that stated by the manufacturer, and advises those who are breastfed to suck out less milk, giving warm drinking water as a “supplementary feed”. According to Komarovsky’s observations, it is those who breastfeed rather than formula-fed who tolerate the vaccine more easily. Before the injection, it is better not to feed the child for 2 hours.
Vitamin D, if the baby takes it additionally, should be stopped 3-4 days before the expected vaccination. After vaccination, you need to wait at least five days to start taking the vitamin again.
Do not dress your child too warmly before the clinic. A vaccine is more likely to harm a sweaty baby with a lack of fluid in the body than a baby dressed for the season and weather.
Now let’s listen to Dr. Komarovsky on the topic of how to prepare for vaccinations.
Attitudes towards vaccinations today vary: from a calm “for” to a categorical “no”. Legal representatives of a minor child agree to vaccination or refuse it. Adults are responsible for the health of the baby and must decide on vaccinations, understanding the mechanism of their action, knowing about the side effects, possible complications and the consequences of refusing vaccination. This article will focus on the DTP vaccine.
Adsorbed pertussis-diphtheria-tetanus vaccine (DTP), when administered according to the accepted scheme, forms immunity to whooping cough, diphtheria and tetanus. The vaccination is done at 3, 4, 5, 6 months. Deadlines can shift towards increasing the interval, but not vice versa. Revaccination is carried out after 12 months: so, if the vaccine was administered for the third time at 10 months, revaccination will take place at 22 months, if in a year - at 2 years.
The drug is injected into the leg. When the vaccine is administered into the buttock in children under 2 years of age, there is a danger of touching the sciatic nerve, nerve trunks or vascular formations, which is important to avoid. There is a lot of adipose tissue in the buttocks; once injected into it, the vaccine is absorbed slowly, and immunity may not develop properly after vaccination.
According to the recommendations of the World Health Organization and Russian Sanitary and Norms Regulations, intramuscular injections are given to young children in the upper outer surface of the middle part of the thigh. The WHO also considers it preferable to administer vaccines into the upper arm.
DTP vaccination is usually well tolerated by children. In most cases, the consequences are within acceptable limits.
After the vaccine is administered, the child must stay in a medical facility for at least half an hour. Very rarely, the DPT vaccine causes allergic reactions: urticaria, polymorphic rash (appearance of spots, papules, nodules) and even Quincke's edema. In case of severe allergy to the vaccine, no further vaccination is carried out.
In the first 2-3 days after vaccination, babies often have a fever (up to 39C) and their general condition worsens. Many children become whiny, capricious, refuse to eat, and are drawn to sleep. This means that the child’s body resists infectious agents and produces antibodies to them.
Give the baby an antipyretic, calm him down, be there. If the temperature no longer rises or rises to low-grade (37–37.5C), the condition returns to normal, and the child’s appetite has returned, then there is nothing to worry about. Temperature above 39C, convulsions, sharp, long-lasting crying are direct indications for calling an ambulance.
There are often local reactions to DPT (by the way, they are also noted after Pentaxim). The injection site on the leg swells, becomes tight and hot, and the baby’s leg hurts after DTP. The child limps after vaccination, scratches the injection site or, conversely, does not allow anyone to touch it because it hurts. Some children cannot walk, they are afraid to stand on a leg or step on it.
It also happens that the child moves actively, steps on his foot, but at the same time limps. Do not limit the baby’s motor activity - the work of the muscle during movement accelerates the resorption of the seal. Sometimes a lump or bruise will form at the injection site. There is no need to worry when there are no other alarming symptoms (or they exist, but do not go beyond the normal reaction described above), and the baby’s general condition returns to normal. It is possible that a microvessel was damaged during the administration of the vaccine, hence the hematoma.
When should you worry? Swelling and redness of the injection site with a diameter greater than 3–8 centimeters (depending on the vaccine manufacturer) is a reason to consult a doctor.
Side effects appear in the first two days and disappear on the third day. In rare cases, the lump at the injection site persists for up to a month. If this does not bother the baby and is not accompanied by a violation of his condition, just wait until the lump resolves. If the injection site becomes suppurated, contact your doctor immediately.
When a child cannot stand on his feet or is limping, parents try to help him. You can do a massage, apply cold or, on the contrary, make warm lotions. It is recommended to smear the leg with gels or ointments, for example, Aescusan. The active component of the product - escin - has, among other things, a local anti-inflammatory and anti-edematous effect. Has no age restrictions. However, it should be borne in mind that such drugs can cause an allergic reaction.
On the day of vaccination, ask health care workers what to do if your child begins to limp after the DPT vaccination. Experts do not recommend taking any measures when the pain is mild and goes away in two to three days. Massages, lotions, and rubbing often only worsen the condition.
Does the doctor recommend gel or ointment? Apply it to the sore spot in a thin layer with light touches, without rubbing. Give your baby a paracetamol or ibuprofen-based pain reliever in liquid form at an age-appropriate dosage.
Vaccination is a serious burden on the body, so it is necessary to make the baby’s life easier after it. This does not mean that the child must be put to bed, not allowed to go anywhere, fed and dressed warmly. Everything should be just the opposite.
A popular children's doctor, candidate of medical sciences Evgeniy Komarovsky gives parents the following advice on organizing the baby's life after vaccination:
