In medical practice, there are different requirements for diagnosing foot disease. When undergoing a military medical examination, to confirm the diagnosis of flat feet and the degree of deformation, X-rays of both feet are taken in frontal and lateral projections, performed under load (standing). Studying x-rays taken in two projections allows us to classify flat feet according to the type and degree of foot deformation.
Longitudinal flatfoot is a deformity in which the foot touches the floor with most of the sole, and the length of the foot increases (dropped arch).
with longitudinal flat feet of the 3rd degree of any foot are not accepted into the army.
The degree of longitudinal flatfoot is determined by a profile radiograph in a standing position under load.
Normally, the arch angle is 125-130 degrees, the height of the arch is 39 mm.
Article 68 of the Schedule of Diseases
angle of the longitudinal internal arch: from 131° to 140°
vault height: from 35 mm. up to 25 mm.
angle of the longitudinal internal arch: from 141° to 155°
vault height: from 24 mm. up to 17 mm.
angle of the longitudinal internal arch: from 155°
vault height: less than 17 mm.
Transverse flatfoot is a deformity of the foot in which there is a flattening of the transverse arch, the support of the anterior section falls on the heads of all five metatarsal bones, the metatarsal bones diverge, and the length of the feet decreases; there is also a deformation of the 1st toe in the form of an outward deviation, while the middle toe deformed in a hammer shape.
Those with transverse flat feet of degree 3 or higher are not accepted into the army.
The degree of transverse flatfoot is determined by a radiograph of the fore and middle sections of the foot in a direct projection, performed under load (standing).
angle between 1-2 metatarsal bones: from 10° to 12°,
First finger deflection angle: from 15° to 20°;

angle between 1-2 metatarsal bones: from 15° to 20°,
First finger deflection angle: from 30° to 40°;
angle between 1-2 metatarsal bones: from 20°,
angle of deviation of the first finger: from 40°;
Arthrosis of the foot joints is a disease in which inflammatory processes of soft tissues and destruction of cartilage (connective) tissues in the joints are observed.
Those with grade 3 transverse or longitudinal flatfoot and severe pain syndrome, exostoses, contracture of the toes and the presence of arthrosis in the joints of the midfoot are not accepted into
The stage of arthrosis is determined by x-rays of the foot; the narrowing of the joint space and marginal bone growths from the edge of the joint space are measured.
Less than 50 percent narrowing of the joint space
Marginal bone growths not exceeding 1 mm from the edge of the joint space
Narrowing of the joint space by more than 50 percent Marginal bone growths exceeding 1 mm from the edge of the joint space Deformation and subchondral osteosclerosis of the articular ends of the articulating bones
The joint space is not visible on the x-ray. Pronounced marginal bone growths. Gross deformation and subchondral osteosclerosis of the articular ends of the articulating bones.
If there are deviations in health, the conscript is exempt from military service. One of these diseases is flat feet. Let's consider whether it is always possible to avoid conscription, and what to do in case of disagreement with the decision of the IHC.
Flatfoot is a foot disease associated with drooping longitudinal or transverse arches.
For the transverse type of the disease:
Signs of longitudinal flatfoot:
Based on the reasons for their appearance, they are distinguished:
The formation of flat feet is influenced by:
Flat feet and the military are compatible in most situations. Let us consider in which case a conscript is exempt from conscription and service.
The first degree of flatfoot is manifested by slight pain when walking. With flat feet of the 1st degree, the conscript is considered fit for service (category A). The presence of the disease is determined using an x-ray. The picture is taken in two projections with the load on the foot.
In case of flat feet of 2nd degree, category B is assigned. With this degree of disease, a person is considered fit with minor restrictions.
Those with longitudinal and transverse flatfoot of the 3rd degree of any foot, with severe pain syndrome, the presence of arthrosis and deformation of the fingers are not accepted into the army. The young man does not participate in the draft. He is enlisted in the Armed Forces Reserve, and he is given a military ID.
To conduct an examination, one of the directions of which is to determine the suitability of a conscript for military service, military military commissions are created.
According to Resolution No. 565, you can appeal the decision:

Thus, those with flat feet are not accepted into the army only if they have the third degree. However, in time of war, a person may be called up for service. If the first degree is obtained, the young man is considered fit for service, the second - fit with minor restrictions.

At a certain age, the question often arises: how compatible are flat feet of the 1st, 2nd or 3rd degree and the army? Moreover, this is a fairly common disease; flat feet of varying degrees of complexity are very common. Typically, running and putting stress on the foot are contraindicated for such a disease, and the army ignores these contraindications. As a result, the disease can seriously progress over 2 years. Let's figure out what legislators in countries such as Russia, Ukraine and Belarus think about this.
To go or not to go, that is the question...
Since the largest country under consideration is Russia, we’ll start with it. In this case, the conscript should read the latest edition of Regulation No. 123 dated February 25, 2003, namely, “schedule of illnesses. People with flat feet will be especially interested in article No. 68 in the section on musculoskeletal diseases. After carefully studying this document, you will figure out for yourself whether you are in danger of joining the army or not.
A similar document in Ukraine is Article 62 of the section “Diseases of the musculoskeletal system and connective tissues, their consequences,” which is included in the “Regulation of diseases, conditions and physical disabilities that determine the degree of suitability for military service.” This document was approved by order of the Minister of Defense of Ukraine No. 402 dated August 14, 2008. Here you will find information on how this disease is interpreted when conscripted into the Ukrainian army.
Belarusians are recommended to read article No. 68 “Instructions on determining the requirements for the health status of citizens when registering for conscription, conscription for compulsory military service, service in the reserve, military service of reserve officers...”. The title of the document is very long, so we present only the first part of it. This instruction was approved by Resolution of the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Health No. 51/170 of December 20, 2010.
It is worth noting that in this case, legislators of all three countries showed rare unanimity; the issue of flat feet of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd degree and military service was considered absolutely equally everywhere, and if you read the documents carefully, you get the impression that they written by the same person, only in different languages. In general, we can say that the armies of Belarus, Ukraine and Russia perceive flat feet almost equally. How exactly - let's look further.
Since we have already understood the similarity of the documents, we will consider the issue in general. So, in all lists the disease is divided into 4 groups.
Group “a” refers to a serious dysfunction due to flat feet; in this case, the conscript falls into category “D” and is considered unfit for military service.
Group “b” implies moderate dysfunction due to flat feet; in this case, the conscript is in category “B”—limitedly fit (not fit in peacetime). Such a person receives a military ID and is sent to the reserve; he is exempt from conscription. A person of this category can only be drafted into the army in wartime.
Point “c” describes minor dysfunctions due to flat feet, in this case the same category “B” awaits the conscript.
Point “d” implies the absence of dysfunction when there is objective data. Here the “B-3” category is already in place, fit for military service, with the exception of some branches of the military. It should be noted that the Ukrainian law does not define the category; people with point “d” simply receive the status “fit”, but this does not change the essence.
When determining the degree of flatfoot, the doctor should be guided by:
Diagnoses according to position No. 123 are distributed as follows:
a) cauda equina, varus, hollow, calcaneal, equinovarus, plano-valgus deformed foot, which was formed as a result of injuries or diseases, preventing the use of military shoes;
b) 3rd degree flatfoot (transverse or longitudinal);
c) 2nd degree flatfoot (only with 2nd degree arthrosis);
d) 1st or 2nd degree flatfoot (with deforming arthrosis of the 1st degree in the absence of contracture of the fingers and exostoses).
At the same time, the article states that flat feet of 1-2 degrees not accompanied by osteoarthritis is not an obstacle to military service.
It follows that longitudinal or transverse flatfoot of the first and second degree will not cause a conscript to be placed in any of the “non-conscription” categories if it is not burdened with other diseases, but those conscripts who have been diagnosed with 3rd degree flatfoot are “unfit for duty.” peacetime" and are exempt from conscription.
This is the task of a clinic doctor, namely an orthopedic surgeon. Based on the above documents, he must draw a conclusion and make a diagnosis. The military commissar himself cannot make a diagnosis ; he simply does not have the right to do so. His task is only to determine the level of suitability for service in accordance with the doctor’s diagnosis.

There comes a time in the life of a young man of conscription age when the question “Do people with flat feet join the army” becomes relevant. If you have the disease, prolonged physical activity on the lower limbs is prohibited. However, the army will not care about following the recommendations. In order not to cause greater harm to health, the conscript needs to know what standards exist in this regard and what degree of flat feet exempts him from the army.
The pathology of the curves of the feet, whether congenital or acquired, is called flat feet. Flattening can be longitudinal, transverse or in two directions. Since the main function of the foot is shock absorption during walking and other impacts, improper distribution of loads leads to severe pain, first in the lower extremities, and then in other parts of the musculoskeletal system.
Important! If you do not start correcting the disease on time, then irreversible consequences are possible, which can only be eliminated surgically.
Why, among all diseases, is flat feet most often mentioned in connection with exclusion from the army? If the rules of treatment and correction of the disease are not followed, the foot becomes flattened to such an extent that it leads to terrible pain and even limitation of movement.
In post-Soviet countries, the issue of admission to military service is regulated by certain regulatory documents. Let's look at some of them.
These regulations contain virtually identical information, with minor differences. Therefore, you can consider general issues, followed by reference to the documents of your country for details.
To be admitted to the army, you must undergo examinations, including to identify flat feet. To make an accurate diagnosis, young men are sent for x-rays, where, in a standing position (for maximum load), photographs of the feet are taken from two angles - longitudinal and transverse. The images determine whether the conscript is sick. And when a pathology is detected, it is decided what type and degree it belongs to.
Important! The diagnosis is made by an orthopedist at the clinic, and the military commissioner only determines the category of admission according to the submitted documents.
Based on the nature of the flattening of the feet, longitudinal and transverse pathologies are distinguished. In the first case, the longitudinal bend of the foot is deformed, creating the appearance that it is “falling” inward. In the second, the foot loses its transverse arch, and its anterior section in the area of the toes expands like a fan. Each of the varieties is divided into types according to the degree of deformation, which ones are not taken into the army?
The foot, untouched by the disease, has the following bending characteristics: from 126 to 131° of inclination and 39 mm of height.
Longitudinal flatfoot 1st degree. Do they take into the army with such a disease? Yes, since this type of disease belongs to fitness category “A” (full clearance). Characteristics of this variety: bending angle is 132-141, its height is 35-26 mm.
In the case of a bending of the longitudinal angle by 141-155°, coupled with its height of 24-17 mm, we are talking about longitudinal flatfoot of the second degree. In this case, category “B” is assigned (admission with restrictions on types of troops).
And only in the third degree, or accompanied by arthrosis of the joints, causing severe pain, or without them, a deferment from the army is possible. The degree characteristics are as follows: the angle of bend of the foot is over 155°, height is less than 16 mm. The young man is given fitness category “B”, which means he is not allowed into the army in peacetime.
In case of transverse deformation of the first degree, fitness category “A” is assigned. In case of flat feet of the 2nd degree, the question of whether they will be taken into the army is not raised, since this diagnosis implies a relation to category “B”, that is, admission with restrictions. Flat feet of the 3rd and 4th degrees, aggravated by arthrosis and pain, make it possible to delay visiting the army, because they fall into fitness category “B”.
Important! In what cases are flat feet recruited into the army? For any, except the third degree of longitudinal, as well as 3 and 4 degrees of transverse. The remaining degrees imply full fitness or admission with restrictions.
The commission assigns each conscript to one of four groups, differing in the degree and nature of flattening of the arches of the feet.
Conscripts with flat feet who do not want the disease to develop into more serious problems should prepare for a visit to the military registration and enlistment office with all responsibility.
Whether people with flat feet are accepted into the army is stated in Art. 68 Schedules of illnesses. To understand it, you need to understand what flat feet are and how they happen. Flat feet is a deformation of the foot with lower arches. In the presence of this defect, the foot completely loses its spring and shock-absorbing ability. In normal condition, the foot has two arches: longitudinal, which is located along the inner edge of the foot, and transverse, which is located under the base of the toes.
The arches perform very important functions: they maintain balance and absorb the shaking that occurs when walking or running. When the muscles and ligaments of the feet weaken, they cease to function normally, as a result of which disturbances of the normal form develop. The foot begins to sag and acquires a flat shape, while losing its spring function.
After the onset of this disease, the entire load that the feet took on is forced to be compensated by the legs and spine. Since these organs are not designed for this, they perform such functions very poorly, so they quickly begin to fail.
Flat feet are classified according to several criteria. According to the nature of the deformation, the disease can be:
Longitudinal is expressed in the thickening of the longitudinal arch, and transverse - in the flatness of the forefoot. It is not uncommon for one person to have both types of flat feet. With the progression of longitudinal flatfoot, an increase in the length of the foot is observed, and with the development of transverse flatfoot, it decreases due to the divergence of the bones.
There are three degrees of this disease. The degree is determined by the angle of the arch of the foot. The first degree of the disease has mild characteristics. At this time, the disease is more of a minor cosmetic defect. In the second degree, the disease has moderate symptoms, but it is already possible to observe changes in the foot that are visible to the naked eye.
The third degree has pronounced signs: the foot completely loses its normal shape. The patient begins to feel serious difficulties when walking, and it becomes completely impossible to engage in sports or hard work.
Starting from January 1, 2014, the requirements for flat feet were increased. Only men who have:
In other words, no one will be recruited into the army with the third degree of illness. The conscript is assigned category B - limited fitness. At the same time, he is enlisted in the reserves and is issued a military ID. Having flat feet of the 2nd degree, a conscript is subject to conscription and is assigned fitness category B-3.
If the conscript’s indicators meet the above requirements, then he is subject to exemption from conscription (fitness category B - limited fit), enlisted in the reserve, and given a military ID.
If you know that you have this disease, you need to conduct an examination and obtain a doctor’s opinion. The examination consists of an x-ray, which should be taken in a lateral projection in a standing position. In this case, a full static load must be placed on the foot. Normally, the arch angle should be between 125 and 130°. With the third degree of development of the disease, the arch angle exceeds 155°.
Everyone knows that people with such a disease are not allowed to serve in the army, but often this is not an argument for the medical commission. And to the direct question, if you have flat feet, do you want to join the army, they do not always answer in the affirmative, and everything is in accordance with the documents. Therefore, be sure to read the description of diseases for this diagnosis.
The diagnosis made by a civilian doctor will not always be confirmed by a doctor upon conscription.
Instead of sending the young man for treatment when a disease is detected before flat feet transform into a serious disease of the entire skeletal system, the state sends him to the army.
Flat feet cannot be cured 100%, but there are special exercises that help fight the disease. However, if the disease causes pain, then surgery is necessary. And it hurts to wear special insoles. Then periodically you need to receive sanatorium treatment, massage, physiotherapy, which improves microcirculation and relieves pain symptoms. All this must be received annually.
Some say that flat feet are now accepted, while others say the opposite. Everyone is right in their own way, but partially. So, first things first. Let's take a closer look at what flat feet are and their types? What diagnosis can be deferred?
Many parents, as well as young men of military age, are interested in the question: “Are people with flat feet allowed into the army?”
A correctly formed young man’s leg rests on 3 points: the heel bone, 2 metatarsal bones, located on the 1st and 5th toes. The connected points form arches that serve to maintain balance and provide shock absorption during movement.
However, sometimes, due to current circumstances, a change in their positions is diagnosed, which creates a deformation of the shape of the arch, and accordingly leads to flat feet. If the initial position changes in the transverse arch, then the toes diverge in a fan-shaped state, and the big toe radically moves outward, the foot changes in size. Transverse flatfoot is diagnosed.
Longitudinal deformation of the sole is characterized by a flattening of the arch, an increase in the size of the foot and complete contact with the floor surface.
There are cases when longitudinal and transverse changes in the sole are determined simultaneously.
However, no matter what type of changes have occurred, the leg loses its shock-absorbing properties and the entire load is redistributed to the joints and spine. Due to the fact that they are not intended for this work, abrasion of the interosseous fluid occurs, which certainly leads to pain, the development of other diseases, and visual distortions of the musculoskeletal system.
Based on the value of the arch angle on the leg, in medicine there are 3 degrees of flat feet:
1st degree. It is characterized by small cosmetic defects, which are most often asymptomatic. The most noticeable manifestation of the presence of grade 1 pathology in both or one leg is a feeling of fatigue, swelling in the afternoon after short physical activity. The patient may also feel pain in the sole if the displaced arch is pressed.
2nd degree. It is characterized by a moderate manifestation of pathology. At the second stage of the disease, the discrepancy between the shape of the foot and the reference one is visually noticeable. Characteristic symptoms for stage 2 pathology are: pain while walking, changes in gait, curvature of posture. Pain in the second degree can spread to the knee.
3rd degree. It is characterized by a pronounced form of manifestation of the pathology, that is, a complete change in the arch of the leg. In this case, the patient at the third stage of development of the disease feels pain in the leg (foot, lower leg), lumbar region, and even head, swelling is observed throughout the day. The ability to work at the 3rd stage of development of the patient’s pathology is minimized, since the shortest walks can cause severe pain, moral and physical dissatisfaction. There is a violation of the musculoskeletal system, and a predisposition to the development of more serious diseases is formed. In most cases, grade 3 pathology is determined by longitudinal flatfoot.
Based on the angle of the arch on the leg, in medicine there are 3 degrees of flat feet.
The presence of such deviations can occur with longitudinal, transverse types of flat feet.
In the case of combined pathology, the picture of the disease worsens:
Grade 1 is characterized by obvious deviations of the thumb up to 20 degrees with redness of the epithelium. Corns form on the feet.
Grade 2 is characterized by a deviation of the finger by 30 degrees, pain, size and number of calluses increase.
Stage 3 is characterized by dramatic changes in the shape and position of the fingers, and inflammation of the joints. The remaining 4 fingers contract.
Service in a paramilitary structure, as well as conscription into it, are events of high responsibility.
A whole list of legislative norms has been developed, in accordance with which conscripts are carefully selected, their suitability is regulated, and a deferment from the army is issued.
Regarding flat feet, it should be noted that the selection criteria for conscripts with this pathology are set out in a separate act on the Schedule of Diseases.
The question arises: “Why are people with flat feet no longer accepted into the army?” Due to amendments in 2014, namely increasing the requirements for suitability for this pathology, the number of recruits for the service has changed.
Now, for boys and girls who want to do military service, different standards apply. According to the amendments, pathology is now divided into 4 fitness groups:
Group “A” is characterized by the presence of serious impairments in functional abilities, which were caused by flat feet. The presence of the disease is characterized by an irreversible process of change in the foot (that is, the inability to correct or improve the position of the arches), which excludes the possibility of wearing military shoes. Therefore, a conscript diagnosed with serious violations is assigned a fitness category “D”, that is, unfitness.
Group “B” is characterized by the presence of moderate impairments in the functional abilities of the skeleton. Because of this, the teenager is assigned a fitness category of “B” (limited fitness) and is issued a military ID. A young man with this category can be drafted only in the event of paramilitary actions on the territory of the state.
A young man with group B can be called up only in the event of paramilitary actions on the territory of the state.
Group “B” involves the presence of minor dysfunctions of the foot, accompanied by moderate pain. The presence of such changes in the arches suggests the possibility of adapting military-style shoes to the recruit. Therefore, a conscript with such a diagnosis is assigned the same fitness category “B”, meaning suitability only in wartime.
Group “G” is determined by the presence of flat feet, but without obvious dysfunction of the skeleton. If such indicators are present, the conscript is assigned fitness category “b3”, which implies full suitability for service, with the exception of certain groups.
In order to understand exactly how to determine serious, minor and mild dysfunctions, you need to look at the Schedule of Diseases. Since the symptoms of the disease can be different, it will not be superfluous to understand the question: “Which fitness category is unsuitable for the army?”
In accordance with the amendments introduced in 2015, group “A” implies all types of flat feet with radical deformation of the sole.
Group “B” included patients diagnosed with longitudinal or transverse pathology of the 3rd degree (pain is observed, patients are limited in the movement of their fingers, arthrosis is diagnosed).
Group “B” consists of conscripts with a low longitudinal arch of the 3rd degree without the presence of arthrosis.
Due to the fact that teenagers whose fitness category is only “B” and “C” are exempted from service, it is obvious that diagnosis of 3 degrees automatically exempts them from service.
This provision applies to all types of pathology. If there is a 1st or 2nd degree violation of the codes, the conscript is not entitled to a deferment. He will receive category “B3” and will be sent to service with individually established restrictions.
Group “G” are 2nd degree conscripts with violations of both codes.
On the one hand, if a young man is declared fit to undergo military training, then he is absolutely healthy. On the other hand, the real picture is completely different. Sometimes, upon returning from the army, repeated medical examination, a sad picture is observed: the degree of development of the disease has progressed. A completely logical question arises: “What contributed to the development of the disease? Is there a deferment if the soldier is sick and in the army? So, first things first.
Military shoes are made from fairly rough materials, without heels on the soles. Therefore, in the presence of flat feet and constant use of such shoes, the natural development of the disease begins. As a result, after some time, the soldier’s knees, joints, hip bones will begin to suffer, and pain will appear in the lumbar region.
In other words, the development of flat feet in the army can lead to serious diseases of the spine, the formation of intervertebral hernias and more. Therefore, if there are first symptoms of deterioration in health, the cadet is obliged to notify management about the condition.
For most boys and young men, military service is a dream. However, health and the presence of diseases do not allow military training. On the one hand, the young man has a desire to become a defender of the fatherland, and on the other hand, he has an unfit health condition. How to be?
In accordance with the current legislation of the Russian Federation, in the presence of flat feet of the 2nd degree of progression, an applicant can be enrolled in an educational institution for further service.
At the same time, it is worth understanding that the next medical examination during his studies will show whether the young man can continue studying. If foot disease is aggravated by osteoarthritis, then there are no obstacles to the young man’s training in a military school.
On the one hand, military service and defense of the fatherland is the responsibility of every man, but on the other hand, the health of our nation and people depends on it.
