Edema of any etiology indicates the accumulation of excess fluid in the intercellular spaces and internal organs of the human body and can be general or local. Facial swelling is classified as local and becomes noticeable if approximately three liters of excess fluid has accumulated in the body.
This phenomenon may result from a malfunction of one or more organs.
The causes of facial swelling may be related to:
If the problem occurs regularly, it is necessary to undergo a series of diagnostic tests and establish the exact cause of this phenomenon. If a diagnosis is made, the patient must begin treatment for the disease causing edema.
If the cause of frequent edema is an unhealthy diet and poor lifestyle, you should adjust your diet and review your daily routine as soon as possible. To do this you need:
An anti-edema mask will help quickly correct the situation. We present only a small part of the tested recipes:
You can put small napkins with prepared gruel on your upper eyelids. The use of fabric promotes more effective penetration of the healing composition deep into the dermis and increases the effectiveness of the mask: swelling goes away faster, and the skin acquires additional tone.
Green tea masks will quickly and effectively relieve swelling
It is necessary to first understand the causes of this condition. Most often this happens:
Swelling of the face (no matter what time of day they occur) is a very alarming signal that should definitely be taken into account, since sometimes they eloquently indicate the presence of a serious illness that must be dealt with.
If edema appears regularly, the patient needs to get advice from several specialists as quickly as possible: a therapist, a cardiologist, an allergist and an endocrinologist.
Good afternoon dear friends!
There are probably few people on the planet who would be one hundred percent satisfied with their appearance.
Even fashion models are hardly happy with it, otherwise Photoshop would not be used so thoughtlessly in the layout of fashion magazines. The reasons for such dissatisfaction could be listed for a long time and entire encyclopedias could be written about them.
For example, I have friends whose face swells in the morning. It would be nice if this happened in the evenings - you dived into your crib and didn’t show yourself to anyone.
But in the morning - for what sins!? And why do the face and eyes swell in the morning in general?
From this article you will learn
I’ll say right away - if your face is swollen in the morning, you need to think about it. At a minimum, this should not happen. First of all, edema is associated with excess fluid in the body. It should not only accumulate, but also be removed on time.
So, we're talking about reasons.
Yes, yes, it would seem such a banal thing - and your face will swell, but this is actually so. When we sleep, we have little control over ourselves, we generally only have a couple of muscles active during sleep, and our state at this time is more like paralysis.
Therefore, it often happens that some muscles become pinched, blood stops circulating normally (and lymph at the same time), as a result of which in the morning we do not feel an arm or leg, and sometimes something worse.
If our head is thrown back in our sleep, the exchange of fluids between the body and head is disrupted. As a result, its excess accumulates in the facial tissues in the morning.
If you like pickles (cucumbers, tomatoes, etc.), then swelling in the morning should be familiar to you.
This is due to the fact that in the evening you consume a lot of table salt. As you know, salt is NaCl. Sodium ions regulate heart rhythm.
If their number goes off scale above normal, then the body tries to eliminate the excess. Because of this, you feel thirsty after eating salty food. Hence, in turn, the consumption of excess water.
This swelling is more like an allergy.
In general, drinking excess water, especially at night, can cause severe swelling on the face and around the eyes.
Regardless of what you ate the night before, what you drank the night before, the swelling of your face depends very much. Because it could very well be alcohol.
It is noteworthy that often the degree of swelling in the morning does not directly depend on the strength and amount of alcohol consumed in the evening.
The liver breaks down alcohol, and the kidneys remove the breakdown products. Sometimes they don't cope well.
All of the above reasons are simple and fixable. And the question “How quickly will the swelling go away?” in case of these reasons there is only one answer “Fast”.
If swelling in the morning is associated with problems with the thyroid gland, heart or kidneys, serious measures must be taken.
I’ll talk about everything serious a little later, but for now I’ll suggest what measures can be taken to avoid morning swelling of the face if it is caused by diet or habits.
To begin with, avoid excess salt. According to nutritionists, you should not consume more than three grams of salt per day. Of course, no one weighs it on scales, but it is better to refuse traditionally over-salted canned food, chips, and store-bought crackers.
I will not urge you to switch to a salt-free diet, because this is a matter of taste. But, as they say, there are no comrades for taste and color.
But I am sure that most of you, dear readers, will like anti-parasitic tea, with which you can remove from the body everything that does not belong there.
You can also get rid of puffiness in the morning with the right pillow. It may be too high for you, causing your head to fall back.
Try not to eat late. It's not even about not eating after six in the evening. The point is that you don’t need to eat three to four hours before bedtime. After all, maybe you go to bed at one in the morning. So, endure from six in the evening until one in the morning!?
What to do if swelling has already appeared? How to remove them?
First you need to remove excess fluid from the body. If just going to the toilet in the morning is not enough, you will have to take diuretics. Soft, without fanaticism.
The DrainEffect drainage drink will help to gently remove excess fluid and toxins from the body, plus this drink promotes effective weight loss.
It is better to use it in the Energy Slim weight loss complex, which stimulates metabolic processes and burns accumulated fat masses.
It could be lemon balm, sage, chicory. The herb is brewed with boiling water and taken before meals.
Another surefire remedy is face masks. They are available in the evening and morning.
I’ll tell you about which ones to choose and how to do it next time. That is, about those that you can buy in the store. And about those that can be made at home - read now.
One of the most popular masks is a mask made from boiled potatoes with the addition of sour cream and finely chopped dill or parsley.
Apply to desired areas for 10 minutes.
You can make a lot of this puree and then eat the unused leftovers.
Parsley is the basis of another mask, this time with tea, but without potatoes.
It is advisable to have stronger tea, although you shouldn’t drink it afterwards. In principle, tea can be used without any additives.
Instead of tea, you can use a frozen infusion of sage, chamomile or calendula. Ice cubes are used to wipe the swollen areas.
Popular masks are based on buckwheat, finely ground in a coffee grinder. It is added to a canvas bag and boiled for a couple of minutes.
Poultices and masks are a momentary remedy. They are able to quickly cope with the problem, but in a situation where swelling is a constant problem, facial gymnastics and massage have proven themselves better.
And if everything seems clear with gymnastics: just move the muscles of your cheeks, eyebrows, cheekbones for a while (a couple of minutes is enough), then we’ll talk about massage in more detail.
But first, let's pay attention to the situation when the cause of facial swelling is illness. In this case, do at least some kind of massage (with oil or cosmetic milk) - the swelling will not go away.
This means that in addition to medical help, you should eat as much seafood as possible (seafood, fish, seaweed) and some fruits, such as feijoa and persimmon.
Here you should urgently run to a cardiologist. The best remedy for heart problems is considered to be a decoction of corn silk with a small addition of honey. Take two spoons of this honey-corn decoction every three hours.
But remember that no decoction can replace the help of a doctor.
And in this case, you need to consult a doctor, and at home you can make a special tincture of bay leaves.
It is consumed for ten days on an empty stomach. This tincture, in principle, can be drunk without any kidney disease, since it removes toxins and cleanses the kidneys.
To prepare the tincture, pour boiling water over a few bay leaves and leave for a couple of hours.
And now, as promised, let's talk about massage. Have you heard about the massage with the mysterious and exotic name Zogan? I'm sure you heard.
It was invented by Japanese Yukuko Tanaka, using traditional Japanese massage techniques, including lymphatic drainage massage, as a basis.
I must say that this massage is really powerful, especially since anyone can master its basic techniques. More precisely, each one, since this massage is “tailored” mainly for women.
This massage (also sometimes called asahi):
He can even remove a double chin. Agree that for those over 40 years old, this is very important. And for some of those under 40 years old.
Facial swelling is a problem familiar to many. Some people are lucky and the swelling disappears on its own in the shortest possible time. Some people are not lucky at all, and they have to walk with swelling until the night, and then, lo and behold, new ones will appear in the morning. It's a vicious circle.
By the way, Nefertiti drops are great for bags under the eyes.

What to do if your face swells? There have been times in every person's life when he woke up with puffy eyes and slight swelling on his face. Many people associate these changes with sleepless nights, active consumption of salt, which retains water, so they do not turn to specialists, but make do with improvised means. What if your face swells regularly?
In such a situation, it is necessary to urgently contact doctors who, using the power of modern diagnostics, will be able to find out the true causes of swelling. Do not rely on your own life experience and the advice of friends: swelling on the face is an alarming symptom, especially if it is combined with swelling of the lower extremities, shortness of breath, obesity and any chronic cardiovascular diseases.
Why does the face swell? There can actually be many reasons:
It is very difficult to independently determine the exact cause of facial swelling. If you do not have certain knowledge, do not try to diagnose yourself. Contact specialists who will quickly find out what caused the formation of swelling on the face and select the appropriate treatment.
Traditional diagnosis of people suffering from edema localized in the facial area includes the following procedures:
Doctors should treat edema. Medical tactics are selected depending on the initial disease. Diuretics may be prescribed to relieve swelling. If the cause of swelling lies in cardiac dysfunction or endocrine diseases, then special medications are prescribed to normalize the functioning of the cardiovascular system, restore hormonal levels and maintain thyroid hormones at optimal levels.
Often swelling on the face occurs due to kidney disease (pyelonephritis, stones). After confirming the diagnosis by ultrasound, drugs are prescribed that can dissolve stones, restore the functioning of the urinary system and fight infectious pathogens.
Sometimes swelling on the face is just a consequence of a sleepless night and an improper daily routine. If a young person’s body can quickly cope with increased stress and regular lack of sleep, then after 35-40 years it takes much more time.
If, after a comprehensive examination, the doctor does not find any serious disorders in you, you should reconsider your work schedule and diet. Try to consume as little salt as possible. Some people mistakenly believe that swelling is caused by the water they drink during the day. In fact, the reason is precisely the salt, which retains fluid in the tissues. Therefore, do not reduce your drinking regime (water is vital to maintain the functioning of all internal processes), but limit salty foods or give them up altogether.
If your face is swollen, salt should enter your body in minimal quantities. Try this trick: salt the food not during cooking, but the finished dish on your plate. This way you will be able to spend 40-50% less salt than before. At first the food will seem a little bland to you, but you will get used to it. After all, your health depends on it. Many centenarians have given up salt altogether: sodium in the required amount comes to us along with food and water, so a person does not need to add additional salt to food.
Buy an orthopedic pillow. Often, swelling on the face appears due to uncomfortable sleep and awkward posture during rest. If blood circulation is impaired in the neck and shoulder girdle, short-term swelling may occur. Because of this, some women suffer from migraines. And circles under the eyes are most often a consequence of lack of sleep or sleeping in an uncomfortable sleeping place.
Almost all people have a slightly swollen face in the morning, but this is almost unnoticeable and goes away within an hour, so not many people pay attention to it. However, in some cases, this phenomenon becomes so pronounced that the face is a fairly voluminous swelling, when from under the cheeks the eyes become almost invisible, turning into a small slit. At the same time, the skin acquires an unpleasant reddish-bluish tint, and at one glance in the mirror it becomes scary: how can you go to work with such an appearance? First, you need to try to find out why facial swelling suddenly occurred: the causes of this phenomenon can be completely safe and quickly removable, or they can be a consequence of serious processes occurring in the body. In the latter case, you will need to undergo a course of treatment.
Edema is too much fluid that has accumulated in the tissue. The water that is in the human body is distributed very evenly: 2/3 of its total volume is located inside the cells, the remaining 1/3 is in the intercellular space. If this third increases, then swelling in the tissues occurs. To eliminate it and put your appearance in order, you need to find out the possible causes of swelling on the face: only by eliminating the provoking factor will you be able to get rid of the scourge. To do this, you will need to remember your diet over the past few weeks (or maybe months), illnesses that you have suffered, as well as many other aspects of your life recently. Experts call the most common causes of facial swelling either internal diseases or a violation of the foundations of a healthy lifestyle.
1) Internal diseases as a cause of facial swelling:
2) Lifestyle as a cause of facial swelling:
Analyze your lifestyle over the past weeks, try to establish a connection between your diet, habits, internal diseases and the appearance of swelling on the face. This will guarantee that you can bring your appearance back to normal and never return to this issue again.
Anyone whose face is very swollen in the morning needs to understand a very important thing: this is not just a cosmetic defect. This is a signal that some processes are occurring in the body that require your immediate intervention.
In parallel with this, swelling on the face, purely from a cosmetic point of view, can be very successfully eliminated using salon techniques and at home.
To eliminate peeling on the face, you must first find out the cause of the appearance, and then resort to salon or home procedures.
Facial redness can be caused by various reasons. Homemade masks for treatment: https://beautiface.net/lechenie/kozha/krasnoe-lico.html
Whatever the causes of facial swelling you have identified, you want to get rid of the cosmetic manifestation of this scourge as quickly as possible, but in some cases a rather long course of treatment may be required. In this case, you can seek help from a cosmetology office, where they will tell you how to remove swelling from your face using the latest innovative developments. The specialist will study your clinical picture, identify contraindications to procedures of this kind and select several options that are optimal for your body. To visit a beauty salon for this purpose, you need to have enough time and money. Today, of the available salon methods for eliminating facial swelling for a fairly long period, the following are used:
Therefore, it is worth contacting them if the causes of the phenomenon may pose a health hazard. If the provoking factors lie on the surface and depend only on your lifestyle, facial swelling in the morning can be removed at home: there are a lot of folk remedies for this.
If you have found out why your face is swollen, and the reason is not serious enough to seek help from specialists and undergo a course of treatment, you can try to eliminate this unpleasant phenomenon on your own, at home. There are a lot of recipes for folk remedies that help the outflow of fluid from the intercellular space. However, everyone who uses them needs to know that the effect will be quick, but rather short-lived: homemade masks and compresses can relieve swelling in half an hour, but only for a day. Until you eliminate the main cause of this cosmetic defect, you will have to look at the swelling of your eyes and cheeks in the mirror in the morning. There are a lot of recipes for folk remedies , so you will have plenty to choose from.
Start washing your face with warm water, after 10–15 seconds turn the water cold (so that the skin is tolerable), then sharply turn the tap on to supply hot water (again, without fanaticism, so as not to cause redness of the skin of the face). Change the temperature regime of washing twice in this way and note with pleasure, looking in the mirror, that the swelling has subsided significantly. Wait another half hour, and there will be no trace of her left. Contrasting temperatures stimulate blood and lymph circulation in the tissues, which helps to quickly get rid of facial swelling.
Compresses are a very effective and time-tested remedy against facial swelling. They are different, so try different methods when looking for the best option for your body.
Massage is a very effective home procedure for eliminating facial swelling. You can do it yourself without completing any courses. As soon as you notice swelling on your face, you need to lie down, relax and do a light, short massage, which includes:
If the cause of facial swelling is due to improper functioning of the kidneys, it is recommended to use gentle diuretics. One of them could be a morning cup of freshly brewed green tea, which should be flavored with fresh milk (1/3 milk for 2/3 tea). Soon you will notice the swelling subsiding. Decoctions of horsetail, rowan berries and lingonberry leaves have the same effect, with which you can start your morning if your face is swollen due to improper functioning of the kidneys.
Mash boiled potatoes in their skins with a fork, apply warm to the face for about 15 minutes. This homemade face mask for swelling is rightfully considered one of the most effective. Even if you don’t have time to boil the potatoes, cut a raw (be sure to be fresh!) potato into several pieces and apply them to the swollen areas with fresh cuts for a minute or two, then replace them with new slices.
Chop fresh dill and mix thoroughly (1 teaspoon) with high-fat sour cream (2 teaspoons).
Not only dill, but also parsley has excellent anti-edematous properties. In crushed form, it can be added to a potato mask (see recipe above) to enhance its effectiveness. Or parsley root is passed through a meat grinder and mixed with strongly brewed black tea.
Now you know how to remove swelling from the face: find out the cause, get rid of it if possible, and at the same time deal with the elimination of the cosmetic defect.
In both cases, if the cause of this unpleasant phenomenon is eliminated in a timely manner, it will be possible to wake up in the morning without fear and look in the mirror with pleasure, without fear of the appearance of new swelling.
Facial edema is a pathological condition caused by the retention of excess fluid in the facial tissues (in the intercellular space), resulting in impaired water metabolism and noticeable swelling of the maxillofacial area.
Edema is not a disease - only a symptom of an illness. To effectively treat facial swelling, it is first necessary to determine its cause, and then decide whether the problem can be dealt with on your own or whether medical attention is required. At the same time, swelling of the face can appear in an absolutely healthy person due to any circumstances.
The accumulation of excess fluid in the body, resulting in swelling, can occur for various reasons. If, in addition to edema, shortness of breath is observed, this is probably a malfunction of the heart. Also, with swelling of the face caused by heart problems, the liver becomes noticeably enlarged. If the face has acquired a bluish tint, the problem is a disruption of the circulatory system.
If the largest area of swelling is under the eyes, then we can assume that the problem lies in the kidneys. As a rule, such swelling appears in the morning. The face increases, and then the eyelids, especially the lower ones. In this case, the swelling is watery and soft, they can be moved. Also, with renal edema, the skin takes on a yellowish-bronze tint. Those people who suffer from chronic kidney disease often experience rapid weight gain before edema, which is caused by internal edema.
If there is a focus of infection in the paranasal sinus area, this can also cause swelling. In this case, the outflow of lymph becomes difficult, but as the inflammation decreases, the swelling also goes away. People with diabetes mellitus often suffer from such edema, because in this group of people the body's resistance to infections is reduced.
Those suffering from chronic respiratory or sinus diseases may also experience facial swelling. Here you should not try to cope with the swelling on your own, much less apply cold compresses to the nose area. Edema will be eliminated only by treatment of diseases and their regular prevention.
Edema is also caused by endocrine diseases. As a rule, in this case, severe swelling of the skin and subcutaneous tissue appears on the face, in which mucous tissue accumulates. The tissues do not have enough thyroid hormones, and the person needs hormone therapy, which is prescribed by a doctor.
In summer, people often experience facial swelling due to sunburn. To prevent them from occurring, you need to either cover the most sensitive areas of the face - the nose and cheeks, or use protective equipment. If a burn does occur, then to avoid swelling, immediately apply cold compresses, if possible with soothing herbs, or use a special cream. There is no need to lubricate burns with oil.
There are other causes of facial swelling:
malignant or benign tumors in the face and jaw;
infections in the maxillofacial area;
reaction to blood transfusion;
fluid retention in the body during pregnancy, especially in the first phases and during toxicosis;
the beginning of the menstrual cycle;
diseases of the genitourinary system;
malfunctions of the immune system and lack of vitamins and microelements;
eating low-quality foods;
excessive salt intake;
unbalanced diet or fasting;
lack of sleep, etc.
If the cause of edema is an allergic reaction, such edema is called angioedema. In addition to swelling, an allergy can be indicated by difficulty breathing, hives, redness of the skin, itching, or even loss of consciousness. As a rule, the soft tissues of the face swell - lips, eyelids (the eyes become “slit-like”), and the tissues on the back of the hand may also become enlarged and acquire a pink tint. To relieve such swelling, you can use antiallergic ointment, sold at the pharmacy. It is also necessary to take an antihistamine - Suprastin tablet.
The peculiarity of allergic swelling on the face is that it can last from 5 minutes to a couple of hours and then disappear without a trace. Allergies can be chronic, established before birth, or appear suddenly, and be caused by medications, especially antibiotics, household chemicals, specific foods, insect bites (wasp stings are considered one of the most dangerous), and inhalation dust, animal hair or plant pollen. Cases of allergies caused by stressful situations are becoming more common.
With angioedema, swelling of the face may also occur. This type of swelling develops quickly and suddenly. Along with the accumulation of fluid in the subcutaneous fatty tissue and mucous membranes, the expansion of veins and capillaries occurs. It should be borne in mind that this is a dangerous syndrome, and there is a possibility of suffocation, since swelling can also affect the pharynx. In this case, an injection of an antihistamine (Suprastin) is given and immediate medical attention is sought. If a person has once experienced Quincke's edema, there is a high probability that it may recur when confronted with an allergen.
Sometimes it is impossible to independently identify the allergen, and to do this you should consult a doctor to undergo a series of tests. Situations often arise when a person has a reaction to several groups of allergens at once, or over time the list of contraindications grows. It is better for such people to always have antihistamines with them.
For allergic swelling of the face, compresses, washing with cold water and other means for external use (in addition to special ointments) are ineffective. Cleansing the skin or wiping it with lotions in such cases is strictly contraindicated. Allergic edema is dealt with either with the help of medications, or it goes away on its own. You should also try not to touch your face with your hands or rub it.
Tooth extraction is a minor surgical operation, i.e. interference in the natural functioning of the body. This can cause complications and side effects, especially if the person’s immune system is weakened. The destruction of the soft tissues surrounding the tooth itself entails traumatic swelling of the gums and cheeks, and if the removal operation was complex (wisdom teeth, partial tooth removal), then swelling is almost inevitable. At the same time, swelling cannot be called a complication, and in most cases it does not pose a threat to the health and life of the patient.
You need to worry if the swelling is accompanied by severe pain, increased body temperature, signs of intoxication, and does not go away for a long time. In this case, we can assume the development of inflammation in the wound. This may be due to the doctor’s violation of the rules for antiseptic treatment of damaged tissues or the patient’s failure to comply with the dentist’s instructions. Inflammation can also occur if the tooth is not completely removed, or if there is a source of infection in the wound that is hidden under the tooth. Sometimes the cause of cheek swelling is the patient's allergic reaction to anesthetics or other drugs.
If there are signs of inflammation, it is necessary to examine the wound and find out the general condition of the patient. The wound, as a rule, is carefully treated with an antiseptic or antibiotic solution, and, if necessary, purulent formations or tooth fragments are removed. After surgical cleansing of the wound, treatment is prescribed, which may include stimulation of the immune system so that the body can quickly cope with the disease.
Symptoms after tooth extraction such as shortness of breath and wheezing pose a great danger to health. In this case, we can talk about allergic swelling of the respiratory tract, which requires prompt assistance from resuscitators, otherwise suffocation may occur.
Physiological swelling of the cheek after tooth extraction does not require treatment - only preventive actions. To reduce swelling, it is recommended to apply cold to the affected area immediately after surgery, and a few hours later - something warm and dry (heated salt or cereal). To avoid getting frostbite or burns, you need to apply objects to your face through a cloth. The soreness of the cheek may persist for about two weeks; if the pain does not go away, you should consult a doctor for re-sanitation of the wound.
Swelling of facial tissues after surgery is a natural phenomenon, and it can be avoided in rare cases. It should be noted that, due to age or individual characteristics of the body and immunity, people tolerate operations differently. In one patient the swelling after surgery is barely noticeable, while in another person in a similar situation the swelling is pronounced and does not go away for a long time.
Typically, the largest swelling appears on the second or third day after surgery, and then gradually subsides. After a week, the swelling should be less, and after two weeks it should disappear completely. Of course, you can speed up the process of tissue regeneration and removal of excess fluid from them if you follow the recommendations of specialists.
Surgeons do not recommend taking a bath or hot shower in the first two weeks; they especially do not recommend visiting a sauna or overheating in the sun. It is better to limit yourself to a contrast shower and wash your face with cool water. In the first two days, it is advisable to make cold compresses from herbal infusions or apply cabbage leaves to problem areas. The face is not wiped with any chemicals and decorative cosmetics are not used.
Physical activity and overexertion should be avoided and you should get more rest. It is also not recommended to bend over, thereby ensuring a rush of fluid to the head. If possible, you should keep your eyes closed more often and try to blink less often. It is not advisable to work at the computer for a long time or read a lot - this causes the facial muscles to experience unnecessary tension. Your sleep schedule should be optimal - you need to get enough sleep. At the same time, it is recommended to sleep on a high pillow, in a well-ventilated area.
At the same time, a lot depends on the drinking regime and diet. Alcohol consumption is contraindicated; salty, spicy, fried and smoked foods should be reduced to a minimum. You should drink about two liters of water a day, but avoid coffee and carbonated drinks.
If swelling does not go away within two weeks, you should contact your surgeon or other specialist. Even despite knowing your physiological characteristics, self-medicating and hoping that everything will go away on its own is dangerous.
Swelling on the face after a blow is also an absolutely normal phenomenon, and appears due to tissue damage and burst blood vessels. Swelling is accompanied by a change in skin color - from red to blue or purple, and then the swelling subsides and the site of the bruise turns yellow. Typically, such swelling goes away gradually, and after a couple of weeks it does not leave a trace. However, if you provide first aid to the person immediately after the blow, the swelling will go away much faster and more painlessly.
Most often, swelling appears under the eyes - due to a blow directly to the eye area, or to the bridge of the nose. In this case, you need to make sure that the eye itself is not damaged or the bone is broken - for this, an examination by a specialist is advisable. And, after making sure that only the outer tissues are damaged, you can use various methods to relieve swelling.
The most common and effective method is to apply something very cold to the impact site, preferably ice or frozen food. You can use metal objects, especially cold ones, for example, place a coin or spoon in the freezer for a couple of minutes, and then apply it to the swelling. This must be done as soon as possible and held at the site of the injury for at least 10 minutes. After this, it is recommended to make cool compresses using herbal decoctions - wormwood, plantain, yarrow, St. John's wort, heather.
Since childhood, a familiar way to reduce pain and speed up healing is to apply a plantain leaf to the bruised area. Cabbage leaves also work. Cabbage perfectly relieves swelling, as if drawing out excess fluid from the tissues. The pain syndrome after using cabbage leaves also becomes less noticeable, and the redness of the skin disappears.
Among the folk remedies that help with bruises, one can highlight bodyaga - a freshwater sponge, sold in pharmacies in the form of a powder or gel. The bandage with bodyaga is kept on the face until it dries. A mixture of analgin and iodine also helps. The tablets are finely crushed, a few drops of iodine are added and the resulting mass is applied to the bruise.
The pharmacy also sells many products that allow you to quickly get rid of swelling - these are various ointments based on plant extracts or synthetic drugs with an analgesic effect. For swelling of the face after bruises, use Troxevasin, Lyoton-gel or Dolobene-gel.
Swelling on the face after blows should not be touched with your hands or tried to massage - it can be even worse. The use of physiotherapy is possible only with the permission of the attending physician, and in later stages.
Perhaps the most common cause of facial swelling among Russian residents is nighttime gatherings drinking alcoholic beverages. Accordingly, the more you drink and the less time left to sleep, the more likely it is to see in the morning in the mirror a noticeably enlarged face and small “gaps” instead of eyes. It is worth noting that with age the chances of encountering such an unpleasant phenomenon seriously increase.
Swelling after drinking alcohol is most noticeable in the first hours after waking up, but if at this time there is an important meeting or you need to go to work, urgent measures must be taken. They usually use folk remedies, the most effective of which are cold compresses. The simplest way is to wet a towel with cold water and place it on your face, or wash your face with cool water for 10 minutes.
You can prepare to solve such a problem in advance and stock up on, for example, ice cubes so that you can wrap them in a towel and apply them to your face in the morning. You need to be careful here, because the largest area of swelling will be on the eyelids, and you should not apply ice to the eyes - this can negatively affect the health of the eyes. If the blood vessels in the eyes are cracked, then cold compresses will not help - you need to use anti-inflammatory drops.
You can also prepare a herbal infusion in the evening and put it in the refrigerator so that in the morning you can moisten a napkin in it and make a compress. Herbs such as chamomile, mint, horsetail, St. John's wort, and lingonberry leaves are suitable for these purposes. Some people find chilled black or green tea helpful (also in the form of compresses or as a cleanser).
Most often, swelling on the face appears after drinking a large amount of beer with a very salty snack. Therefore, if important things are coming up the next day, it is better to reduce the use of both. And when you go to bed, you should try to lie face up on the pillow, but if you sleep “on your face,” then you are guaranteed a “rumpled” look in the morning.
Taking any medications internally to relieve swelling from the face is practically useless. But for some, drinking a cup of warm green tea with milk helps. It is advisable to avoid hot drinks and dishes like soup - steam on the face will only increase swelling. Salty foods should not be consumed immediately after getting up either - they will retain fluid, as a result of which the swelling will not subside longer.
Along with compresses or masks, you can do a light facial massage, paying special attention to the area around the eyes. With such a massage, it will also be useful to use essential oil (add 2-3 drops to a spoon of basic vegetable oil), which has a calming effect. You should not rub your face, use scrubs or lotions. A hot bath will also not do any good; the best option is a contrast shower, after which not only your appearance will improve, but also your general condition.

Nutritionists believe that if a healthy person’s face swells in the morning, the cause should be sought in his diet. As a rule, edema occurs in those people who do not care about their health and do not adhere to the principles of a healthy diet, or in those who periodically violate them due to circumstances. Eating salt helps retain excess fluid in tissues. If you reduce its amount in your daily diet, the swelling may soon disappear. It is also not recommended to often eat canned foods, spicy, smoked foods. In this case, the volume of clean water drunk per day should be at least two liters.
Also in the morning, the face swells for those who like to eat before bed or even in the middle of the night. You need to eat 3-4 hours before bedtime, and it is advisable not to eat “heavy” foods - fatty, fried, animal products, with the exception of low-fat milk and kefir. You should also not drink before bed, and to avoid thirst, it is advisable to reduce your salt intake in the afternoon.
So-called night owls - people who go to bed late - often notice swelling on their faces. And if in youth a person, as a rule, looks quite fresh after a sleepless night, then in adulthood traces of overwork or improper regime are visible on the face. Doctors advise going to bed before midnight, preferably no later than 10 pm, then in the morning a person will look rested and feel accordingly.
If swelling in the morning becomes chronic, you should seriously think about the health of your internal organs. Edema often occurs due to problems with the kidneys or cardiovascular system. In this case, swelling may be accompanied by a change in complexion, shortness of breath or other unpleasant symptoms, often painful. In this case, a full examination of all body systems and a course of treatment can help.
If facial swelling is not chronic and is a consequence of poor nutrition, injury, or allergies, it will go away quite quickly, and the process can be accelerated with folk remedies or simple actions. If the swelling does not go away for a long time or appears periodically, you can visually reduce it using the same means, but you can get rid of it only by identifying and treating the disease that caused the swelling.
Here are some methods to relieve swelling:
diuretic: tablets or infusion of bear's ear herb (the fastest and most effective method, if the cause is not a bruise or an allergic reaction);
antihistamines (Suprastin, Tavegil). In this case, it is better not to swallow the tablets, but to place them under the tongue;
gels that relieve swelling (“Troxevasin”, “Lioton-gel”, “Dolobene-gel” and others);
bay leaf decoction. Take a tablespoon 3 times a day (3 leaves per glass of boiling water). After a week, the swelling should go away;
dandelion root decoction. Brew it in a ratio of 1:5, take twice a day - after waking up and before bed;
reducing salt intake to at least 3 grams per day, but it is advisable to completely avoid salty foods for a while;
normalization of water balance in the body - you need to drink enough plain water every day. The average norm for an adult is up to two liters per day;
refusal to consume smoked and canned food, mayonnaise, ketchup, as well as carbonated drinks, alcohol and coffee;
exclusion of meals and liquids before bedtime (the last meal should be at least 3 hours before bedtime);
inclusion in the diet of more foods containing fiber - vegetables, fruits;
regular kidney cleansing;
cold compresses, or rubbing the skin with pieces of ice;
washing with decoctions of medicinal plants - chamomile, mint, linden, lingonberry leaves;
using a high pillow for sleeping. This will ensure the drainage of fluid from the face;
The following masks will help improve facial blood circulation and help remove excess fluid:
Potato. To prepare it, potatoes are boiled in their skins and mashed together with a fork, after which the resulting “mashed potatoes” are applied warm to the face for 15 minutes. This mask is considered the most effective. But, if there is not enough time for boiling, you can also use raw potatoes - cut them into circles and keep them on the swollen areas of the face until the potatoes warm up. You can grate raw potatoes, squeeze the juice out of them and use them for compresses.
Dill and sour cream. Several sprigs of fresh dill are finely chopped (you should get about 1 teaspoon of greens) and mixed with 2 tablespoons of chilled sour cream. Keep this mask on your face for about 10–15 minutes, or until the sour cream warms up. The mask is washed off with cool water.
Parsley root mask. Fresh parsley root is scrolled through a meat grinder or grated on a fine grater. The paste is applied to problem areas (you can also apply it to your eyelids), and after 20 minutes, wash it off with lukewarm water. After such a mask, no face cream is required.
Cucumber. A fresh cucumber (preferably from the refrigerator) is grated on a coarse grater, and the resulting pulp is applied to the face. You need to keep this mask for about 20 minutes. This mask will also moisturize the skin and give it a fresh look, which will greatly help with swelling caused by alcohol abuse.
Tea. You need to brew black or green tea to get a strong infusion. After it has cooled, moisten a napkin or gauze in it and apply it to your face. As soon as the compress warms up, it needs to be moistened again. You can also put used tea bags on your eyes, however, the quality of the brew in bagged tea is noticeably worse.
Herbal infusions. Brew sage, chamomile or birch buds (preferably in a water bath). The infusion is filtered and allowed to cool. You need to apply it to your face according to the same principle as in the previous recipe.
Essential oil. In one tablespoon of vegetable oil (olive, sesame, soybean) you need to dilute two drops of essential oil of juniper, geranium and rosemary. Apply the resulting mixture to the face and do a light massage (if the facial tissues are not injured). To remove the mask, use a soft cloth or cotton swabs.
Buckwheat mask. Buckwheat is ground in a coffee grinder, then it must be placed in a fabric bag and lowered into boiling water for 2 minutes. After the contents have cooled, apply the bag to your face for 15 minutes.
Mask with cognac. Typically, this mask is used to relieve swelling after parties. It contains: a teaspoon of cognac or vodka, an egg yolk, half a teaspoon of lemon, 5 drops of vegetable oil, half a spoon of green tea. You can add a little anti-edema gel, it is sold at any pharmacy. Keep the mask on your face for about 15 minutes, then rinse it off and wipe your face with chilled green tea or an ice cube.
The choice of remedies that will help get rid of swelling directly depends on the cause of fluid retention. If you experience regular and prolonged swelling of the face, which is difficult to remove, you should consult a doctor and check the functioning of your internal organs and systems. Usually, after a course of treatment and restoration of body functions, the problem disappears.
You should seek emergency medical help if swelling of the face is accompanied by difficulty breathing and coughing, a feeling of constriction in the throat, itching in the mouth, rash or hives, a sudden change in complexion (blueness, yellowing, paleness), redness of the eyes, their bulging or feeling of pain.
