Varicose veins can rightfully be called the oldest disease. The question of how to treat it has been facing doctors for more than the first millennium. Even the concubines of the pharaoh in Ancient Egypt were concerned about dark bulging veins on their legs. True, they chose a rather bloodthirsty method of treatment - they cauterized them.
Fortunately, at the present stage, methods of treating varicose veins are quite loyal.
Varicose veins in the legs occur when the valves in the veins do not work properly. Blood, instead of going back to the heart, accumulates (stagnates) in the legs.
The risk of developing the disease increases in the following cases:
If at least one of the items on this list applies to you, be careful - you are testing your veins to the limit!
Varicose veins on the legs are not just an unpleasant looking defect. The most common symptom of varicose veins is the development of large, visible bulges on the veins and a change in skin color. In some cases, people develop what are called spider veins, or the more serious variant, spider veins. Private “companions” of varicose veins are swelling, throbbing pain or muscle spasms, numbness of the fingers.
More severe cases of varicose veins on the legs can lead to dermatitis, which is an itchy rash on the skin.
Advanced varicose veins are fraught with dire consequences and complications: thrombophlebitis, thrombosis, trophic ulcers or eczema in the affected areas.
The most dangerous complications of varicose veins are tissue necrosis and pulmonary embolism, which can lead to sudden death.
All these complications are more than serious, which is why if you have problems with your legs, you should only contact specialists.
MC "Oxford Medical Zaporozhye" offers you a radical and minimally invasive method of treating varicose veins - SCLEROTHERAPY.
Before the sclerotherapy procedure, the patient must undergo an ultrasound examination of the veins, which will show the condition of the deep veins and valve apparatus. Next, the doctor will determine the optimal course of treatment.
Sclerotherapy is a popular, effective and safe method of treating varicose veins and spider veins. It is based on the introduction of a special drug into a diseased vein - a sclerosant, which, under certain conditions, “seals” the diseased vein, and it subsequently completely disappears.
Sclerotherapy for a long time, and in some cases for life, guarantees good therapeutic and cosmetic results.
At the present stage, there is another type of treatment for varicose veins - Foam-form sclerotherapy. The peculiarity of this procedure is that the sclerosant is injected into the varicose vein in the form of whipped foam.
This method of drug administration has a number of advantages:
During one procedure (course) of sclerotherapy, the doctor can make from 3 to 10 injections. The number of injections depends on the characteristics of the vein damage. It may take from 1 to 5 (on average 2-3) courses, depending on each specific case.
Sclerotherapy is a painless treatment procedure. Modern sclerosants are absolutely safe and have an anesthetic effect.
At the end of sclerotherapy, a special elastic bandage is applied to the leg or a compression stocking is put on, which should be worn around the clock and cannot be removed without the doctor’s permission.
There is virtually no rehabilitation period - immediately after the procedure the patient can return to normal life; in most cases, walking and an active lifestyle are recommended.

Varicose veins in the legs, often called simply varicose veins, are a fairly common pathology of the veins (vessels that carry blood to the heart). The disease is characterized by an increase in the diameter of the lumen, thinning of the walls of the veins and the appearance of local aneuryses-like expansions (the so-called “nodes”).
Humanity has known about varicose veins for a long time. For example, during excavations in Egypt in one of the burials (1595-1580 BC), they discovered a mummy that had all the signs of varicose veins and a cured venous trophic ulcer of the leg. With this disease, the saphenous veins dilate, the outflow of blood is disrupted, and congestive changes develop in the legs. Folk remedies for varicose veins used at home are quite varied and effective.
When a person sits, the veins located in the pelvis and in the upper part of the thigh are somewhat compressed. At the same time, the movement of blood through them slows down. In this regard, “sedentary” professions can also sooner or later lead to the appearance and development of the disease. Moreover, people are at risk regardless of age.
Also at risk include:
People with this disease often get tired legs quickly and experience pain. Although this symptom does not always appear. Some may not experience any painful sensations even with very strong dilation of the veins. Patients may experience itching of the ankle and lower leg. Most often this occurs after removing socks or stockings. Due to itching, a person scratches his feet, resulting in redness and rashes. They are often incorrectly considered a consequence of dry skin.
A significant percentage of cases of varicose veins become complicated and lead to phlebitis, dermatitis and bleeding. Scratching or slightly damaging the skin can cause the formation of a painful, long-lasting ulcer.
When the skin over a varicose vein becomes completely thin, minor damage to it when shaving or combing causes severe bleeding.
Varicose veins in the legs - treatment at home is carried out using special diets and a variety of folk remedies.
For varicose veins, it is necessary to consume the maximum amount of vegetables and fruits and the minimum amount of smoked and salted foods. Products should contain as little fat, animal protein and refined carbohydrates as possible. Spicy foods lead to thickening of the blood, resulting in the formation of blood clots. Alcohol also works. Try to eat meat as little as possible; it is better to include fish in your diet.
Almost all plant products are beneficial. The so-called “ABC principle” applies here, in which A is carrots, B is lettuce, and C is citrus fruits and greens. Also to this list it is necessary to add two more essential vitamins that strengthen the walls of blood vessels. Vitamin E – olive oil and vitamin P – green tea, walnuts, rose hips.
It’s simply wonderful that veins are enriched with the necessary nutrients and become more elastic when consuming sprouted grains of rye and wheat, beans, peas and green onions. Try to eat 2-3 cloves of garlic with other foods every day, unless this is contraindicated by other diseases. This lowers blood pressure, cleanses blood vessels of deposits, strengthens their walls, thus preventing varicose veins.
Nutmeg. 100 gr. ground nutmeg is poured into a bottle of vodka (0.5 l) and left for ten days. The infusion must be shaken daily. After straining, take 25 drops half an hour before meals three times a day. When the bottle runs out, it is necessary to interrupt the treatment for 10 days, and then continue, and so on until the final recovery.
Garlic with honey. Clean 250 gr. garlic, grind it into a fine grater or scroll through a meat grinder. Add 350 grams to the resulting pulp. liquid honey, mix and let it brew for one week. They take one table at a time. spoon in 40 minutes. before meals three times a day. The course of treatment is 2-3 months.
Chestnut. 50 gr. Chestnut fruits or flowers are poured with a bottle of vodka (0.5 l) and left for two weeks in a dark, warm place. The bottle must be shaken every day. Take the product 35-40 drops three times a day. The course of treatment is 3-4 weeks.
Calendula and calamus. You need half a liter of homemade apple wine. Pharmaceutical crushed calendula flowers and calamus rhizomes (two level tablespoons each) are placed in it, infused for two weeks in a cool, dark place and filtered. They accept 2 tables. spoons half an hour before meals three times a day.
Milk serum. Moisten gauze in serum and wrap areas with dilated veins. For a compress, cover with paper. In the morning, wash off the serum with cold water. You can also use ground horse chestnut leaves instead of whey.
Wormwood with milk. Fresh heads and leaves of silver wormwood are thoroughly ground in a mortar. The prepared raw materials (1 tablespoon) are mixed with the same amount of sour milk or sour cream. Apply an even layer onto gauze and apply to the affected areas.
Garlic with butter. Grate or pound white garlic thoroughly in a mortar. The resulting slurry is mixed with butter in a ratio of 1 to 2. The mixture is placed on the diseased veins, covered with parchment paper and wrapped with something warm on top. The compress is left overnight. The course of treatment is every evening for one month.
Wormwood with curdled milk. One handful of fresh crushed wormwood is mixed with yogurt or matsoni. Apply to gauze and apply to the most dilated veins. The feet are placed on a small pillow and covered with film. After half an hour, the gauze is removed.
Kalanchoe. Finely chop the washed leaves of the pinnate Kalanchoe, fill half a liter bowl with them and fill it to the top with vodka (70% alcohol can be used). Shaking occasionally, leave in a dark place for 10 days. The legs are lubricated with ointment before going to bed from the feet and above. Relief is felt immediately after the first procedures, but when the case is severe, treatment lasts up to 4 months.
Birch buds. Mix alcohol tincture of birch buds with apple cider vinegar in a 1:1 ratio. The resulting product is lubricated on sore legs in the mornings and evenings. First once, then after 15 minutes. again, after which the legs are allowed to rest.
Ulcers resulting from varicose veins are treated with grated fresh potato gruel. It is applied to the affected area in a layer of about one centimeter and covered with several layers of gauze for 4-5 hours. After this time, the pulp needs to be changed.
Treatment of varicose veins is carried out using various methods, the optimal combination of which is selected by an experienced phlebologist. The goal that specialists set when treating varicose veins is to eliminate symptoms, prevent complications and improve the appearance of the legs.
If varicose veins are in the early stages, your doctor may recommend simply making lifestyle changes. If varicose veins in your legs are causing severe symptoms, your doctor will suggest one or more treatments for varicose veins. Treatment procedures are necessary for severe pain, blood clots in the veins, or skin lesions caused by varicose veins.
Many patients with varicose veins seek treatment simply to improve their appearance. After all, it is not difficult to cure varicose veins, and the result of treatment is the restoration of the aesthetic appeal of the legs for many years.
However, keep in mind that treatment of varicose veins helps get rid of existing pathology, but cannot always prevent the development of varicose veins in other veins.
Treatment of varicose veins: lifestyle changes
An effective method of treating varicose veins of the lower extremities is lifestyle changes. Such measures can prevent the deterioration of the veins, reduce pain and prevent the further development of varicose veins. Lifestyle changes include the following:
How to treat varicose veins on the legs most effectively can only be determined by an experienced phlebologist. As one of the methods in complex vein treatment, your doctor may recommend that you wear compression stockings. They create a slight upward pressure on the legs. This helps blood flow and reduces swelling in the legs.
There are three types of compression stockings. One of them is preventive stockings and tights. They put the least amount of pressure on your feet and are sold in many lingerie stores. The second type is over-the-counter compression socks and stockings. They apply a little more pressure than the previous ones. Such products are sold in specialized stores and pharmacies.
Prescribed compression stockings are a third type of compression stocking for vein treatment. They put the greatest pressure on the veins and are also sold in specialty stores. However, to select such stockings, you will need to consult a doctor or a specialist store consultant.
Please note that varicose veins of the lower extremities require professional treatment performed by experienced specialists. A phlebologist will determine how to treat varicose veins and what type of compression garments are suitable for your case.
Treatment methods for varicose veins
Treatments for varicose veins include removing the varicose veins or cutting off the blood flow to the varicose veins. Closing or removing varicose veins will not cause problems with blood flow, since it will be redistributed to other vessels.
You may be offered one or more of the treatments for varicose veins described below. Side effects that may occur after these procedures include bruising, swelling, changes in skin color, and minor pain.
One of the methods of treating varicose veins without surgery is sclerotherapy. To treat varicose veins using sclerotherapy, special chemicals are used. This substance is injected into the vein, where it irritates the inner surface of the vessel. This leads to the formation of fibrous tissue, as a result of which blood flow in the affected vein is blocked, and over time it becomes invisible.
Sclerotherapy is used to treat small varicose veins and veins. It is performed in a doctor's office in a standing position. To completely remove varicose veins, you may need several procedures.
Usually the procedure is repeated after 4-6 weeks. After the procedure, the legs are wrapped with an elastic bandage. This helps to achieve a better effect and reduce swelling.
Microsclerotherapy is used to treat spider veins and other very small dilated vessels.
Microsclerotherapy is carried out on the same principle as conventional sclerotherapy, but special ultra-thin needles are used.
Percutaneous laser coagulation is used to remove spider veins and small dilated vessels.
This technique is based on the peculiarities of laser radiation, which passes through the skin without damaging it and heats the walls of the vessel. As a result, they become soldered together, and over time the vessel completely disappears.
With percutaneous laser coagulation, no incisions are made and no injections are given.
Intravascular laser coagulation (EVLC), radiofrequency ablation (RFA)
One of the most effective methods for treating varicose veins on the legs is laser coagulation.
With intravascular laser coagulation of veins and radiofrequency ablation, laser radiation or radio waves are used, which create an increased temperature inside the vessel, which leads to its soldering. The blood flow in the damaged vessel is blocked, and subsequently it is transformed into a strand of connective (fibrous) tissue.
During this procedure, the doctor makes a small puncture in the skin near the dilated vein. He then inserts a small tube called a catheter into the vein. A device at the end of the catheter heats the vein and seals it, thus providing quick and non-traumatic treatment of varicose veins.
You will be conscious during the procedure, but your doctor will apply local anesthesia to the area around the vein. After the procedure, you will be able to go home.
Intravascular laser coagulation is also called endovenous laser ablation or obliteration.
Endoscopic vein surgery
A proven and reliable method for treating leg veins is endoscopic vein surgery. To perform endoscopic surgery, the doctor makes a small incision in the skin near the dilated vein. He then examines the inside of the vein using a tiny camera at the end of the tube and closes it off using a surgical device on the camera.
Endoscopic vein removal is usually used in the treatment of varicose veins, which is accompanied by complications and the appearance of trophic ulcers. After the procedure, you will be able to return to your normal life within a few days.
During an outpatient phlebectomy, the doctor removes the diseased vein through a small incision in the skin. This surgery is usually performed to treat superficial varicose veins located close to the surface of the skin.
You will be conscious during the procedure, but local anesthesia will be given at the surgical site. You can leave the clinic on the same day.
Vein ligation and stripping
Ligation (ligation) of veins and their surgical removal (stripping), as a rule, are used only in the treatment of severe varicose veins. During the operation, small incisions are made in the skin through which the veins are ligated and removed.
To prevent you from feeling pain, the operation is performed under intravenous or epidural anesthesia.
This procedure is performed on an outpatient basis. The time for complete recovery after surgery is from 1 to 4 weeks.
Varicose veins or varicose veins are dilation of a vein, a decrease in its elasticity, weakening of valves and the formation of venous “nodes”. In such veins, blood flows more slowly. Because of this, heaviness in the legs, swelling, pigmentation occurs, but, most importantly, the risk of blood clots increases. The detachment of a blood clot can cause blockage of large blood vessels (stroke, heart attack).
Think of a rubber ball that has been inflated many times. It has changed its volume and will not be able to return to its original size. The same thing happens with the vein. Unfortunately, there are no pills that will return her to her original volume.
The sooner you contact a phlebologist, the more gentle the effect will be. In the early stages of the disease, we will be able to use vein treatment techniques in 1 day.
The main plus! Already in the first hours after the operation you return to your normal life!
In our region, operations of this level are performed only in the Adastra MC, which has in its arsenal a unique VINUS device from COVIDIEN (USA).
A needle is used to administer the drugs, so the surface tissues are not injured, which provides an excellent cosmetic effect, rapid healing, and the ability for the patient to immediately return home.
Miniphlebectomy is used as a separate method in the early stages, when there are small varicose veins, or as an addition to RFO in case of significant manifestations of the disease.
The sooner you see a doctor, the easier and more comfortable the treatment of varicose veins will be, and the better the therapeutic and cosmetic effects will be.

Many thanks to all the staff. Especially P.V. Pavlov. Everything is in its place. I’m leaving for Krivoy Rog with great satisfaction. Thanks again to everyone.
I had RFO performed by Dr. Pavlov P.V. Thank you very much. The operation was successful, the service was excellent. My health improved.
Hello, Nadezhda! A consultation with a phlebologist in our center costs 245 UAH.
Hello! I want to have radiotherapy performed on veins in my lower extremities! I’m interested in at least the approximate cost of such treatment. thank you in advance!
I express my deep gratitude to the medical couple, P.V. Pavlov. and Pavlova L.G. for professionalism, “golden hands”, individual approach, patience.
She underwent surgery for varicose veins using RFO, with a positive result. Thanks to all the personnel who took part in the preparation and conduct of the operation.
I sincerely wish you all prosperity and positive results from your work.
Be healthy and successful.
Sincerely your patient.
Great clinic. I came in with varicose veins and had severe pain. After RFO, the pain in my legs did not bother me. The spider veins were also removed, the legs look aesthetically pleasing. I don’t regret one bit that I went to the Adastra clinic, thank you very much to P.V. Pavlov. and all the clinic staff.
I am very glad that I decided to have RFO surgery. For about 20 years I had a problem with varicose veins, which gradually developed. No, my legs didn’t hurt, but from an aesthetic point of view it looked terrible. This was very disturbing! And the prospect of vein thrombosis was also not at all satisfactory.
I found “Adastra” on the Internet. Before this, I read a lot of information about the modern treatment of varicose veins. I was pleased to have such a new method with local anesthesia as RFO in this clinic. It is believed that this method is more gentle than laser.
The clinic has a very good atmosphere and friendly staff. Surgeon-phlebologist Pavel Valerievich Pavlov made a good impression both as a doctor and as a person. Also a very good ultrasound specialist is Lolita Grigorievna Pavlova.
The operation takes place under constant ultrasound control. My case is not simple. “Twisted veins,” as the doctors put it, “curly.” The doctors had to tinker. During the operation it was necessary to use a combined method. They kept asking about the sensations; contact with the patient was important for the doctors; if it was painful, they immediately stopped and added anesthesia. Everything is quite tolerable. There are almost no sensations of the electrode working during the process. I had to make more than my fair share of incisions due to my curly veins. But it is not important. They processed it and bandaged it in elastic bandages. I got up from the operating table and went into the ward. In 20 minutes. My relatives had already come for me, and I went home. Of course, there were bruises and wounds. They made lotions and treated the wounds with brilliant green. Every day the view got better. At the base of the ankles, where the electrode entered through the catheter, there was a tightness and numbness for some time, which goes away over time. I remain under the supervision of doctors, they are monitoring how everything heals, there was a repeat ultrasound. I’m glad that everything went well and, importantly, both legs were done at once. While the blood flow adapts, it is clear that you need to wear compression garments. At first, for several days there was weakness, but not severe, I just lay down more often.
I'm happy with my result.
Many thanks to P.V. Pavlov, L.G. Pavlova and the entire medical team! I sincerely wish all the Adastra staff good luck and good health.
Wonderful Clinic, wonderful staff, experienced doctors.
I did radiofrequency vein obliteration (RFO).
Modern technologies, excellent results.
Low bow to Pavel Valerievich Pavlov and everyone who helped me restore the beauty of my legs.
Prosperity and more grateful clients.
Many thanks to the entire team of the Adastra clinic for my beautiful legs. Especially to Dr. P. V. Pavlov, L. G. Pavlova, Inga, and the girls at the reception. Professionals work here. Thank you very much for your work.
I encountered the problem of varicose veins seventeen years ago, after the birth of my first daughter. At first, thin wreaths appeared on the legs, under the knees, and then, over time and weight gain, this developed into an even more unsightly form. At first I took pills and used ointments at home, but there was no desired effect. Although I was treated for a long time and for six months with a slight interval, there was still no effect.
While reading information about new technologies, I saw on Facebook an RFO device that I had once seen in a video on a Moscow website. What I liked is that the operation takes place quite quickly, with an interval of twenty to thirty minutes and, most importantly, you can go home right away. This interested me very much. Now after surgery I feel great! I have already told all my friends and mothers I know about this technology! I advised you not to advertise your clinic, but simply to tell you that there is a technology that eliminates such significant problems for women. I know that many people face this problem. And Dr. Pavlov P.V. is simply wonderful! The overall attitude of the staff and team is like a family environment, with understanding, no tension. Everything was clear, from the initial consultation to the operation and follow-up. Adastra is cleanliness, tidiness, positive emotions, friendly staff and wonderful doctors. Thank you!
Varicose veins are a disease that does not go away on its own. Failure to consult a specialist in a timely manner leads to irreversible consequences: thrombophlebitis begins to develop over time, and the slightest injury can cause the appearance of trophic ulcers.
The body signals quite clearly that the disease has begun to affect the veins: the patient experiences pain when walking, aches and heaviness in the legs, muscle cramps, swelling and pigmentation may appear.
Unfortunately, there are no miracle drugs that could restore healthy veins. However, varicose veins are not a death sentence. Today, in the arsenal of modern medicine, there are a number of effective non-surgical methods for treating varicose veins, which help thousands of people cope with the disease and give them the opportunity to live without pain.
Sclerotherapy is one of the most popular operations in the treatment of varicose veins without surgery, despite the fact that it was invented relatively recently. The procedure is successfully used by phlebologists and has positive recommendations from experts and patients. Its essence lies in the introduction of special drugs into the damaged vein, which glue the walls of the canal and lead to complete resorption of the affected area. The administration of the substance is absolutely painless. After surgery, compression garments must be worn.
Sclerotherapy is a very effective method that does not require anesthesia or hospital stay. In addition, the procedure guarantees an excellent cosmetic effect: scars are excluded.
Complete treatment of varicose veins takes place within 3-4 sessions. If the disease is diagnosed at an early stage, sometimes 1 or 2 procedures are sufficient. To a large extent it depends on the doctor’s experience. Sclerotherapy improves blood flow, after which swelling, pain, fatigue and heaviness in the legs disappear. But most importantly, the aesthetic appearance of the lower extremities improves.
Treatment of varicose veins using endovasal laser obliteration (EVLO) or coagulation (EVLK)
This type of procedure is comparable in effectiveness to surgery. However, it has many more advantages: laser treatment of varicose veins in 100% of cases takes place without complications, the laser does not injure the skin at all and guarantees an aesthetic effect.
Non-surgical laser treatment of varicose veins is prescribed even when there is an advanced form of the disease. Under the influence of the beam, the lumen of the affected vein closes. The procedure should be carried out in a phlebological operating room and under constant ultrasound monitoring. After the operation there are no hematomas or bruises.
Treatment of varicose veins using the EVLO method cannot be carried out without the availability of modern equipment in the clinic. Dr. Semenov A. Yu. in his daily practice uses the latest German-made laser generator and reliable disposable radial light guides.
Radiofrequency obliteration (radiofrequency ablation) of varicose veins
Today, this minimally invasive method is considered the most innovative and safe. It is an alternative not only to classical surgical interventions, but even to laser coagulation. Its effectiveness has been confirmed by many studies. Treatment of varicose veins using RFO is based on the use of microwaves, which heat the vein wall and seem to “brew” it. The radiation is transmitted through the vein using a special device via a catheter.
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia with constant ultrasound monitoring. In one session, 7 centimeters of the affected area is treated. The device determines the time of exposure to a varicose vein independently.
The method is especially attractive because after the operation only one small puncture remains on the skin, there is no need for hospitalization, and the rehabilitation period is completely short: half an hour after the operation the patient is capable of any independent activity, and therefore can go home.
Treatment of varicose veins today is possible with many modern methods. It is impossible to single out the most important one among them. Despite the high safety of laser exposure, sclerotherapy and radiofrequency ablation, each doctor will still make a decision in favor of one or another method based on the results of the patient’s examination and based on his own experience.
In Moscow, more than 7,000 patients have already entrusted the treatment of varicose veins to Dr. Semenov A.Yu. This is one of the most famous phlebologist surgeons in Russia. In the medical community, he is considered an authoritative expert in ultrasound diagnostics and a highly qualified specialist in endovasal methods for the treatment of varicose veins.
