When an excessive amount of fluid accumulates in the tissues of the human body, edema . They can be local or general depending on the cause. In diseases of the cardiovascular system, kidneys, metabolic disorders, lack of nutrition, etc., general edema occurs; in case of inflammation, thrombophlebitis, local edema occurs.
Swelling of the legs occurs due to impaired blood flow and a significant increase in pressure in large veins and smaller vessels. Hydrostatic pressure in the capillaries is much higher than in the intercellular spaces and tends to squeeze fluid out of the vessels into the tissue, resulting in edema.
Both men and women suffer from swelling of the legs, with the female half more so, because “beauty requires sacrifice” (high heels). An important factor is lifestyle: at work we sit at the computer, at home we sit in front of the TV. Movement is necessary for the human body; its absence contributes to stagnation of blood in the vessels of the legs. As a result, varicose veins and thrombosis occur. Diseases of the kidneys, cardiovascular system, joints or pathologies of the lymphatic system can also cause swelling of the legs.
In acute thrombophlebitis of the veins in the legs, swelling may occur, accompanied by inflammatory phenomena: redness, heat, pain along the vein. Rarely, swelling occurs as a result of impaired outflow of lymph (tissue fluid) through the lymphatic vessels.
With chronic heart failure, swelling in the legs occurs in the same way as with varicose veins. But they have characteristic features. The main one is a very noticeable dependence on what position a person is in: if motor activity is preserved, then swelling is located symmetrically on both legs, mainly on the legs, in a horizontal position (lying patients) - in the lumbar region.
Swelling of the legs can appear with age and not only because the heart function deteriorates, but also due to a lack of collagen protein in the connective tissue, which becomes loose and accumulates fluid.
Edema, the cause of which cannot be determined, is called idiopathic. They appear in older women suffering from obesity, in hot weather, from vegetative-vascular dystonia, before or during menstruation. The swelling is located in the lower leg area and may increase towards the end of the day. They can form for various reasons: due to severe overwork, stress.
Edema is a signal of the presence of a disease in the body; when it appears, you must immediately undergo examination at a medical institution to establish an accurate diagnosis.
Treat swelling of the legs with folk remedies
If small swelling appears, mainly in hot weather, you can try to fight it with folk remedies yourself. In no case should you get carried away with diuretics, which can greatly affect the kidneys and can also contribute to the occurrence of thrombosis. It is also known that even small doses of diuretics remove potassium from the body. Remember - local edema cannot be treated with diuretics alone!
— Replace regular salt with iodized salt and reduce its consumption to a minimum. For taste, it is better to add lemon juice, herbs - parsley and dill, which have weak diuretic properties.
— It is useful to include strawberries, watermelons, lingonberries, and fresh cucumbers in the diet because they have a diuretic effect.
— It is undesirable to consume: jelly, aspic, chokeberry, these products increase blood viscosity.
- Very useful are lemons, cranberries, raspberries, garlic, which are blood thinners.
— It is recommended to consume foods with increased potassium content: apricots, bananas, peaches, honey, dried apricots, raisins, lettuce, spinach.
— You can’t sit in one position for a long time, tuck your legs under you, it’s better to stretch them forward. In bed at night while you sleep, place a cushion under your feet to elevate them a little.
— It is useful to perform the following exercises as a preventive measure for edema:
Stand straight, raise your heels from the floor and sharply lower them down; you need to repeat this exercise intensively for 1-2 minutes.
— Swelling of the legs is recommended to be treated with folk remedies using birch leaves. To carry out this procedure, you need to sew bags on your legs up to the knee from linen fabric (you can use old sheets). Pour birch leaves into them and put them on your legs so that the layer of leaves covers your legs on all sides, 1.5-2 cm thick. During this procedure, heavy sweating occurs. Replace leaves with new ones as they become moist. If the swelling is small, one or two procedures will be enough.
— When treating swelling of the legs with folk remedies , it is recommended to take a decoction of flaxseed.
Prepare it in an enamel bowl, add 2 tablespoons of flax seeds to a liter of water, bring to a boil and cook over low heat for 15 minutes. Cover with a lid and leave on the stove for an hour. Use without straining; you can add lemon juice to add flavor. Take 100 ml hot every two hours. The duration of treatment is 1 month.
- You can treat swelling of the legs with baths.
Add 0.4 liters of apple cider vinegar to a bowl with 10 liters of warm water. Place your feet in the bath and hold for 20-30 minutes. After this procedure, do not wipe your feet, but let them dry. Then put on socks made of natural material (cotton or linen).
- You can get a massage.
The massage is carried out from the feet, gradually moving upward with light movements. Massage movements should be performed without pressure in the direction from bottom to top. Massage stimulates blood circulation, which has a positive effect on reducing swelling.
An important factor in the prevention and treatment of edema is footwear. It should be comfortable, made from natural materials. The heel height should be minimal.
Fill a bucket with cold water and add one packet of rock salt. After this, soak a terry towel in this solution and, after squeezing it lightly, place it on your lower back. Do this about ten times. This procedure will affect urination, and swelling will begin to subside.
And another traditional medicine method for treating edema. Take a fresh cabbage leaf and cut out the veins from it. You need to walk over them with a rolling pin, and then apply them to the sore spot. Secure the sheet with adhesive tape.
One newspaper dedicated to folk medicine wrote about a wonderful folk remedy for treating facial swelling.
You need to take two tablespoons of flaxseed, add 1/2 liter of water and boil the mixture for fifteen minutes. Then cover the broth with a lid and place for an hour in a place where there is no sunlight.
Take the medicine four times a day, half a glass. You can add lemon juice to it. Five days are enough to cure swelling. But you can extend the course of alternative treatment for edema to two to three weeks. Moreover, this treatment method is good not only for edema, it improves the entire condition of the body as a whole.
If you suffer from swelling, then you need to use diuretics. Such products include garlic, celery, parsley, onions, asparagus, black currants, kefir, as well as watermelon, pumpkin, strawberries, grapes, cottage cheese, and yogurt. For dropsy, you should not drink tea, but various herbal decoctions that help treat the causes of dropsy.
If you have abdominal dropsy, you can drink cucumber pickle two glasses a day, this will alleviate the condition and relieve pain. But all such methods of treatment and pain reduction are best carried out under the supervision of a doctor.
You can remove fluid from the body using onions. Take onions - two medium-sized pieces - and in the evening cut them thinly, and then add sugar. The next morning, squeeze out the juice. This juice should be drunk once a day, two tablespoons in the morning before meals.
You can also take four teaspoons of dry (or fresh) parsley roots or seeds, chop and pour half a glass of boiling water. The product must be infused for ten hours. Take the infusion three to four times a day, one tablespoon half an hour before meals. This medicine has diuretic properties.

During edema, our grandmothers sewed knee-sized bags of linen for their legs, filled them with birch leaves and put the bags on their legs. The leaves should cover the legs tightly.
For five hours, the sick person sat in the bags like this, and when his feet began to sweat a lot, the leaves were changed to fresh ones. The swelling goes away if you do this treatment several times. For mild swelling, you need to sit in the bags for two hours.

Swollen ankles and feet occur when fluid gets stuck in the spaces between the cells of the body. It usually occurs in the ankles, legs and feet, but can also affect any area of the body. There are folk methods that answer the question of how to relieve swelling of the legs.
Because the legs are so far from the heart, they take much longer to heal than other parts of the body because it takes much longer for blood to circulate from the heart to the legs. With diabetes and metabolic syndrome increasing at a rapid rate, it is now very common for people to suffer from swollen legs, feet and ankles due to poor circulation and cardiovascular problems as well as general injuries.
Swelling of the legs and ankles is usually caused by a serious condition of the heart, kidneys, or blood vessels.
Other reasons include:

If you have these symptoms, you need to know that this is stage l of varicose veins. How our readers solve foot problems.
Luckily, along with resting your feet, there are many effective home remedies for treating painfully swollen feet at home.
Epsom salts work on painful, swollen feet. There are many reasons why feet may become swollen, and the accompanying pain can cause great discomfort. Dissolving a few cups in the bath treats tired feet, calves and ankles. If you don't want to waste water on a full bath, you can always prepare an Epsom salt bath in a shallow bucket or bowl of water. Soak your feet for at least 15-20 minutes, or longer if you have time.
Some health professionals recommend using Epsom salts for swelling, but also for feet that are injured or infected, and even for arthritis. These salts are quite low in price with potentially great benefits for overall foot health. Epsom salts are made from magnesium sulfate, which is absorbed through the skin—the reason these salts are so successful at reducing puffiness and improving circulation. They will also make and keep your feet smelling good longer.
If you suffer from painfully swollen feet, ankles and calves regularly, you may want to ask your doctor to prescribe magnesium supplements, which may help relieve the pain. Often, magnesium deficiency can contribute to foot inflammation or even cause swelling, which causes fluid to retain in the legs and feet. Even if you don't have a magnesium deficiency, supplementation may still be a good option because extra magnesium is known to help. In addition to many pregnant women developing edema, women in general may be more susceptible to swollen feet in the month before their menstrual cycle, when a woman's body naturally retains more water.
Talk to your doctor before taking any supplements because magnesium and some other supplements known to reduce swelling may interact with other medications, making the swelling worse. And people with heart disease or kidney disease should not take magnesium supplements, as there is an increased risk of complications.
Inverted gravity can be a great ally for swollen feet and ankles. Try propping up your legs in bed, using a pillow so that your legs are elevated above your heart and encourage fluid to drain and be absorbed, or eliminated (through urination) by the body. You may need to do this several times a day, depending on how severe your condition is.
Foot massage is one of the best remedies for swollen feet and ankles. When you're on your feet all day, blood flow is often restricted, causing fluid to pool in your legs. This can also happen from sitting for long periods of time. However, regular massage in the area can help increase blood flow in the lower extremities. In general, a foot massage is also a good way to relax after a long day.
You don't have to spend money to get a professional massage, although that is certainly an option. For many people, only gentle massage is required to reduce swelling. The massage should start at the feet and work up to the knees to improve blood circulation. For even better results, use an oil that will help reduce swelling or discomfort, such as cypress or chamomile oil.
A significant number of people do not drink enough water every day, which contributes to swelling. When your body doesn't get the water it needs, it begins to retain water in an attempt to avoid dehydration, leading to water retention to cause swelling in the legs and feet. Often, simply drinking more water throughout the day will help dilute the sodium and caffeine. Drinking 8 to 10 glasses of water a day will help flush toxins from the body.
Swelling of the feet can cause pain and discomfort, make it difficult to put shoes on your feet, or even make you unable to walk or move very far if the swelling is severe.
