Winter sneakers for children are made using the same technology as adults. The difference lies in the anatomical sole and the ability to replace conventional insoles with orthopedic ones if you have flat feet.

Wearing the wrong shoes and not respecting your feet can cause foot deformities to develop, especially during growth periods. Starting from the first steps of a child, inexperienced parents make mistakes when choosing shoes for him, looking at fashionable and beautiful models. But the principles of selecting optimally suitable options for children echo the choice of shoes for adults: first, “comfortable” and “high-quality”, and only then “fashionable” - otherwise the health of the feet will be harmed.
We take the health of our children very seriously; as soon as we do, we run to the pediatrician. We fight runny noses and coughs. We make sure that he takes his medicine and eats his vitamins on time; smear, rub, drip. We are always focused on what is immediately noticeable. But we don’t think about some problems, and perhaps we don’t even realize. Our baby runs and runs and doesn’t complain about anything. The main thing is that he doesn’t cough, doesn’t sneeze and breathes through his nose. At the same time, we must be attentive to how he runs, what kind of gait he has, his posture, how he plays, whether he gets tired quickly, and so on. If after a walk a child says that his legs hurt, you should listen to him.
Ignorance is no excuse for inaction
Very often, problems such as posture and gait disorders, muscle imbalance, pain in the legs and back appear in children already with existing flat feet, and are one of its consequences. Only parents have no idea about the presence of initial foot deformation, and local pediatricians rarely search for it in advance.
In addition to biologically active points and zones on the plantar surface, associated with all organs and systems, the structure of the foot deserves special attention and respect. The unique structure of the human foot can be compared to a talented engineering solution in the construction of, for example, a bridge, where all the details are taken into account, the dimensions are calculated, the connections of the parts are reliable, the safety margin is ensured for decades - and all this taking into account the expected enormous loads. The arches of the feet withstand serious tests under a wide variety of, and not always favorable, conditions: body weight plus heavy bags, uncomfortable shoes plus long walking, high heels plus many hours of static load, sports training plus high humidity with overheating, etc.
The reliability of the arches of the foot is ensured by the interaction of the structural units that form them: bones, muscles and ligaments. The arches of the feet are nothing more than shock absorbers that significantly reduce the adverse effects of walking or jumping on the entire body, and on the spine in particular.
Thanks to the arched structure, these loads are intelligently distributed throughout the foot in the transverse and longitudinal directions. The formation of the foot can last up to 16 years. It follows from this that a child’s foot is an immature “structure”, and its proper development requires certain conditions.
Flat feet is a foot deformity in which the arches are flattened (the reference point for determining the longitudinal arch is the inner edge of the foot, for the transverse arch is the line along the base of the toes).
What characterizes flat feet as a disease?
The bones of the foot skeleton, connected by numerous ligaments, create a single formation resembling an arch. The supporting areas are: behind - the calcaneal tubercle, and in front - the heads of the metatarsal bones. The convex part of the arch faces the back of the foot. It forms a longitudinal arch, which, when walking, running, jumping, smoothes out shocks and tremors of the whole body, gives softness and elasticity to the gait, making it light and springy.
In addition, there is also a transverse arch of the foot, which in the area of the heads of the metatarsal bones very easily changes its shape when walking: at the moment of loading, it flattens each time until it completely disappears.
The arched shape of the foot skeleton with a pronounced longitudinal arch is supported not only by ligaments. In strengthening the arches, the muscles that are located on the plantar surface of the foot, as well as the muscles of the lower leg, which are attached in the middle section of the foot or on its plantar surface, are of great importance. Muscles together with ligaments form the so-called dynamic force, which prevents the foot from flattening under the influence of load.
The foot functions normally as a single anatomical and physiological complex when the load acting on it (static force) is completely balanced by dynamic forces (strong ligaments and muscles). If, under the influence of some reasons, the muscular-ligamentous apparatus is weakened, then the normal shape begins to be disrupted - the foot settles and becomes flat. At the same time, other deformations occur: the forefoot expands, and the heel deviates outward. The foot takes on the appearance of being spread out, and one of its main functions—springing (spring)—is lost. This deformity is called flat feet.
The severity of flatfoot disease can vary
Ligamentous failure is the earliest stage of the disease. The shape of the foot is not changed, but as a result of overstretching of the ligaments, pain occurs that appears after a long walk or at the end of the day. After rest, the pain in the feet goes away.
Simple flat feet is the 1st stage of the disease. The foot appears flattened, which can be clearly seen from the side of the internal longitudinal arch. The pain becomes more constant, fatigue is noted when walking, and the elasticity of gait is lost.
Combined flatfoot is the next, 2nd stage of the disease. The arches of the feet disappear, the foot is spread out. The pain in the feet is constant, it spreads to the lower leg (from muscle strain) and the knee joint (from improper load when walking). There is significant difficulty walking.
Recognition of flatfoot diseases in children has some peculiarities, since the foot of a growing organism goes through certain stages of formation that should be taken into account.
Anatomical studies show that newborns have well-defined arches. However, the arched structure is masked by abundantly developed subcutaneous fatty tissue, and when examining the sole, the foot appears flat.
From the second year of life, when the child begins to walk and learns to run, a true decrease in the longitudinal arch of the foot is observed under the influence of the load on the still fragile foot. From the age of 3, significant development and strengthening of ligaments and muscles occurs, due to which there is a gradual increase in the height of the arches. Thus, the arched structure of the foot is increasingly taking on its external contours. The older the child, the better the arches of his feet are pronounced upon examination. Thus, the outwardly flat shape of the foot in younger children cannot be attributed to a true flatfoot disease, but is only a phase of normal development.
It should be remembered that a flat foot, as a variant of the norm, can last a lifetime and not cause any functional disorders (a person can do any work on the legs, lifting heavy objects, and there is no pain).
Due to the already noted anatomical and physiological characteristics in children, when determining flat feet from sole prints, an error may be made, since in early childhood all or almost all children are flat-footed. And if there are doubts about determining the nature of flat feet, the child (patient) should be referred for consultation to a specialist - an orthopedic doctor. Therefore, in addition to the complaints of patients, the most correct thing is to determine the location of the osteochondral skeleton of the foot.
Based on the nature of the deformation, there are 2 types of flat feet (or a combination of them):
- the transverse arch of the foot is flattened: the anterior section rests on the heads of the five metatarsal bones (normally only on I and V)
- foot length decreases
- flattening of the longitudinal arch
— almost the entire area of the sole is in contact with the floor
Until approximately 4-5 years of age, children normally develop elements of a flat foot. The development of true flat feet in children is facilitated by some unfavorable factors that primarily weaken the muscles and ligaments. These may include: congenital weakness of the ligamentous apparatus, decreased muscle strength after a long stay in bed as a result of illness, due to infections, obesity, diathesis, loss of nutrition and general poor physical development; weakening of the ligamentous-muscular system as a result of overload with increased body weight during a period of increased growth, when lifting heavy objects (for example, carrying younger brothers and sisters), during intensive ballet classes. The development of flat feet is influenced by wearing inappropriate shoes: with excessively hard or excessively soft soles, when using shoes without heels, from overheating of the foot tissues in the warm season in felt shoes, sneakers, rubber shoes, when shoes are trampled, etc. An unfavorable factor is walking with your toes too far apart or your legs spread wide apart. Among teenagers, cases of the so-called muscular-spastic foot are sometimes observed, which develops under the influence of overload and hormonal influences: there is sharp muscle tension, stiffness and severe pain in the tarsal joints.
Dealing with existing flat feet is not easy. This process is lengthy and labor-intensive, and sometimes requires considerable financial investments. Especially when the pathological process has gone far. Therefore, let's start taking measures in advance. What should you pay attention to first? Let's discuss an important issue today: the shoes your child wears.

Children learn to walk in boots - a high back is important for fixing the ankle joint, so sandals and shoes are not suitable for mastering such a tricky science as walking. The first “house shoes” should be soft - made of genuine leather or nubuck, and have a minimum number of internal seams. In hard shoes, a child will fall more often, clinging to minor obstacles due to the inability to bend the leg inside the shoe. A partially perforated surface is desirable so that the feet can “breathe”. The insole in high-quality shoes, as a rule, is made of natural materials, and in no case stains the baby’s socks or tights (to avoid toxic effects upon contact with skin).
Let's not forget about safety: the soles of shoes should not be slippery! The flexible and thin sole is great for first home boots, with a tiny heel (literally a few millimeters). But it will not save the foot from encountering pebbles, bumps and pits - only a thick and soft (cushioning) sole reliably protects the foot from the effects of these inevitable street little things.
Babies' paws, not accustomed to work, are almost always wet after walking (especially at home), so you should not leave shoes on your feet for a long time. Even if it is difficult for busy mothers to put on and take off their fidget shoes and tie and untie laces a hundred times a day, overheating of the feet should still be avoided. Especially if your feet are sweaty. It is more useful to change dry socks and switch the child’s attention to another activity.
As your baby grows up, he will begin to present surprises: shoes or boots that have never been worn and bought in advance are already too small. Yes, growth spurts are a common event. But you shouldn’t save money by squeezing your delicate foot into a shoe that’s too tight—even your toes are resting. Also, buying shoes with a large “reserve” is not a solution when you tighten the clasp on the ankle so as not to lose your new thing along the way. When trying on, you need to take into account that the foot behaves dynamically when walking, i.e. the size increases slightly. Of course, shoes for children are always bought “for growth”, with a margin, but with a reasonable margin that does not interfere with the child’s walking - about 1.5 cm from the tip of the toes to the toe of the shoe.
Wearing tight shoes leads to impaired blood supply to the feet and obstructed venous and lymphatic drainage. Pay attention to the foot of a child who has taken off his shoes after a walk: if the texture of the tights or the inner seams of the shoe are imprinted on the skin with all the details, the purchase was unsuccessful and the shoes need to be changed. Prolonged inattention from parents to the grown foot, as a result of which it rests against the toe of the shoe for a long time, leads to deformation of the toes. Shoes should fit tightly around the foot (not be tight or loose), have a small heel (1/14 of the length of the foot), with the correct longitudinal axis of the foot (the middle of the heel is the second space between the toes). Shoes should have a moderately dense lining of the inner arch, on which the foot “sits” (rests) in case of fatigue of the musculo-ligamentous apparatus.
Be sure to stock up on replacement shoes for your child: this gives the foot a chance to rest from its usual position and the shoes to have a good airing. Walking in wet shoes or slippers is the key to an upcoming encounter with fungal diseases of the skin of the feet and nails.
Now let's turn our attention to arch supports - a device for correcting and caring for the condition of the arches of the feet. They can be built into ready-made shoes, or specially made and additionally embedded.
The recommendation to use insoles is a responsible purpose. If the foot develops normally, and the diagnosis of flat feet is made incorrectly, the appointment of an insole can have the exact opposite effect: the outer arch of the foot is overloaded, and this entails flattening of the internal longitudinal arch. A progressive pain syndrome develops - “insoles disabled” (R.R. Vreden). With the constant, without objective need, use of insole inserts, the arches of the feet become “spoiled” and cease to independently and adequately perform their functional duties. For children under 5 years of age, the use of insoles is not recommended at all, since pressure causes atrophy of the muscles and ligaments that support the arch (T. S. Zagornaya).
An insole-instep support must be made according to an individual impression of the sole so that its relief matches the nature of the foot deformation. The insole should have some spring, and the patient should feel comfortable stability. From the outer edge, the insole plate should cover the heel to prevent it from deflecting outward. The heel part may be slightly deeper. Of the standard insoles for the treatment of flat feet, the leather insoles from the Moscow Orthopedic Footwear Factory most meet the requirements - with rubber inserts adjustable in height in the area of the inner arch.
For juvenile muscular-spastic foot, immobilization with plaster splints is prescribed for 4-6 weeks. After the pain disappears, massage, therapeutic exercises, gradual loading, provision of insoles and employment are recommended.
Surgical treatment of static flatfoot in children is used very rarely, with severe deformation and not earlier than 9-10 years of age.
With a justified diagnosis of “flat feet” and serious deformities of the foot, as well as accompanying migraines or pain in the legs and back, wearing arch supports (orthoses) becomes mandatory for a long time or forever. But the temporary use of orthoses to correct minor deviations from the norm is also quite advisable: children are usually prescribed to wear shoes with special insoles for up to several hours a day for a certain period of treatment. If your child needs to use orthoses, consult with an orthopedic doctor who works directly in this area. An experienced specialist will definitely focus the attention of parents on the need to regularly adjust the shape and size of insoles in children, taking into account the rate of foot growth, carry out repeated diagnostic measures during the treatment process, and will give a lot of other professional advice.
Prevention of flat feet in children
Prevention of static flat feet in children is carried out in the direction of improving the condition of muscles and ligaments, developing the correct load regimen and rational choice of shoes.
First of all, it is necessary to carry out general hardening of the body, instill in children correct posture, and teach them to walk without spreading their toes too wide. The desire of parents to teach their children to stand and walk early is completely unfounded. It is necessary to combat the desire of teenage girls to wear shoes with high heels and very narrow toes early on. When using such shoes, the forefoot is overloaded. In the area of the heads of the metatarsal bones, the ligaments that are not yet strong enough cannot withstand the excessive load; they become overstretched and weaken completely. As a result, girls develop so-called transverse flatfoot with the 1st toe deviating outward. The latter is accompanied by subluxation in the first metatarsophalangeal joint, significant pain, patients are forced to wear shoes 2-3 sizes larger. Treatment of severe outward deviation of the 1st finger is possible only by surgical methods.
As a preventive measure, children walking barefoot on soft ground (loose soil, sand) or on uneven surfaces (pebbles, gravel) is very useful - the foot reflexively “picks up”, the active formation of arches occurs, and the syninator muscles of the foot are strengthened. This is also facilitated by walking barefoot on a log, climbing a rope or pole, balance exercises with support on one leg, etc. Classes for children can be organized in kindergartens and in physical therapy rooms in children's clinics. It is advisable to include special exercises in games, which is especially important when organizing classes with young children.
