Causes of joint diseases, their symptoms and how to treat

Joint diseases are a very common pathology among the population of absolutely any age. Both inflammatory and degenerative-dystrophic processes can affect the joints of the arms, legs, and spine. Regardless of the location of the pathological focus, diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for all these diseases have much in common.

The abundance of different terms causes serious confusion among most ordinary people. In order to simplify the understanding of the situation, we will try to answer the banal question: “So what is the correct name for joint disease?” It all depends on the cause and nature of the pathological process developing in these organs. Here is an example of a simplified classification:

  1. Inflammatory diseases - arthritis can be rheumatoid, reactive viral, septic, psoriatic, gouty.
  2. Degenerative-dystrophic diseases - osteoarthritis, metabolic arthritis, osteochondropathy.
  3. Secondary arthropathy – damage to the joints of the arms, legs and spine due to connective tissue diseases, endocrine disorders and cancer.
  4. In addition to general terminology, many are interested in what exactly a joint disease in a specific location, for example, the legs, is called. In this regard, the name of the joint in Latin is taken as a basis and either arthritis or arthrosis is added to it, taking into account the nature of the pathological process.

    For example, coxarthritis is an inflammation of the hip joint, and coxarthrosis is a degenerative-dystrophic pathology of the same organ.

    At the same time, it would be rash to assert that diseases of the joints of the legs are somehow fundamentally different from diseases of the joints of other localizations. This is especially true for the causes of occurrence, clinical symptoms, and general principles of diagnosis and treatment.

    What are the reasons for the development?

    Each group of joint diseases, according to the classification described above, has its own causes of development. More or less everything is clear with secondary arthropathy, which is a manifestation of primary pathology (lupus erythematosus, scleroderma, polymyositis, diabetes mellitus, hypothyroidism, etc.).

    As for the other two groups, it can be quite difficult to determine which factor specifically provoked the disease.

    For example, the cause of the development of most arthritis still cannot be established, with the exception of reactive arthritis, where there is a clear relationship with a previous enterocolitic (intestinal) or urogenital infection.

    A similar situation is with degenerative-dystrophic pathology or arthrosis, the cause of which remains unknown to this day. However, there are a number of predisposing factors that contribute to the appearance of arthrosis in the arms, legs and spine:

  5. Hereditary predisposition.
  6. Large body weight.
  7. Patients' age is over 45 years.
  8. Vitamin D deficiency.
  9. Various past or existing arthritis.
  10. Diabetes.
  11. Atherosclerosis.
  12. Serious injuries to the musculoskeletal system.
  13. Frequent sprains, tears or ruptures of the tendon-ligament apparatus.
  14. Exhaustive physical activity (professional sports, work, etc.).
  15. Joint syndrome is a combination of several symptoms of damage to the joints of the arms, legs, and spine, manifested by pain of varying intensity, stiffness, changes in shape and dysfunction. The pathological process may involve:

  16. Articular part of bones.
  17. Joint cavity.
  18. Synovial bursa.
  19. Cartilage.
  20. Tendon-ligament apparatus.
  21. Vertebral discs.
  22. Menisci.
  23. Arthralgia (joint pain) is a leading symptom in diseases of the joints of any location (arms, legs or spine), the appearance of which forces the patient to consult a specialist. In the acute stage, the pain is usually intense. With the chronic course of the disease, the feeling of pain becomes less intense, but longer lasting. Possible causes of joint pain:

    1. Inflammatory and/or degenerative-dystrophic changes in the affected joint.
    2. Mechanical impact (physical strain on the joint, stretching of the tendon-ligament apparatus).
    3. Disturbance of regional blood flow.
    4. Disturbance of metabolic processes in the articular surfaces of bones.
    5. Joint pain can also be associated with pathology of internal organs. For example, with angina pectoris or a malignant tumor of the lung, pain can be transmitted to the shoulder joint. But with a more detailed examination, it is possible to establish the exact location of the pathological process. The peculiarity of such pains is their diffuse nature.

      Patients often experience a specific sensation of difficulty moving after a period of rest, especially in the spine and legs.

      As a rule, a symptom such as stiffness appears in the morning immediately after waking up from sleep.

      Therefore, we usually talk about morning stiffness or starting stiffness.

      Swelling, enlargement of the synovial membrane and fibrous growths in the periarticular tissues during the chronic course of the disease can lead to reversible or irreversible changes in the shape of the joints. The nature and duration of the pathological process will determine how pronounced these changes will be.

      Another symptom that can be determined upon examination is swelling of the joint. The cause of swelling may be swelling of the synovial membrane, accumulation of inflammatory fluid in the joint cavity, swelling of surrounding tissues (periarthritis, bursitis), etc. There are three degrees of severity:

    6. Mild – slight swelling, moderate smoothness of the contours is noted.
    7. Medium – swelling is visible to the naked eye.
    8. Pronounced – the shape of the joint takes on a characteristic spherical appearance.
    9. An irreversible change in the shape of the joints, which develops as a result of bone growths, destruction of the articular surfaces of bones, and the formation of cartilaginous or fibrous adhesions, is called deformation.

      Changes in range of motion, manifested by either limitation or increased mobility, indicate a violation of the functionality of the joint. A decrease in natural range of motion will indicate limited function. If mobility impairments are observed in only one axis, then we are dealing with damage to the periarticular tissues.

      Complete limitation of movements is caused by fibrous-sclerotic or bone growths in chronic arthritis.

      If a cartilage or bone fragment separated as a result of injury or necrosis (death) gets between the articular surfaces of the bones, a so-called joint block (symptom of jamming) may occur. However, after removal of the fragment, as a rule, this symptom goes away completely and the function of the joint is restored.

      Increased mobility is observed with some arthropathy and congenital malformations. Joints with a pronounced range of motion are often called loose joints.

      In addition to the above symptoms, there are a number of other signs of joint diseases that cannot be ignored. Other clinical symptoms often observed in arthritis, arthrosis and arthropathy of various localizations:

    10. Change in skin color over the affected organ (hyperemia).
    11. Local increase in temperature (hyperthermia).
    12. A characteristic crunching sound when performing movements (crepitus).
    13. Popping, painless clicks (more common in the leg joints during squats).
    14. Decreased strength and tone of the periarticular muscles to varying degrees.
    15. To make the correct diagnosis and choose the appropriate course of treatment for joint diseases, a thorough analysis of clinical symptoms and a comprehensive objective examination using all the necessary instrumental diagnostic methods are of paramount importance. To determine the localization and nature of the pathological process, the following can be used:

    16. X-ray examination.
    17. Ultrasonography.
    18. Computed tomography.
    19. Magnetic resonance imaging.
    20. Arthroscopy (mainly for large joints of the arms and legs).
    21. Arthrocentesis (puncture of the joint cavity).
    22. Examination of synovial fluid.
    23. For joint diseases, treatment is primarily aimed at eliminating clinical symptoms, reducing the activity and progression of the pathological process, stopping damage, restoring functionality and improving quality of life.

      Conservative treatment

      It is necessary to start by limiting the motor mode for the affected joint. In some cases, immobilization (immobilization) with the help of a splint, corset or splint may even be required.

      In the acute stage of the disease, cold or ice applied to the inflamed area helps greatly.

      Conservative treatment should provide relief from pain, reduction of inflammatory and degenerative processes, improvement of metabolic processes in cartilage and bone tissues and normalization of blood flow. The following types of therapy are used:

    24. Medications – non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, chondroprotectors, etc. Simultaneous use of two drugs from the group of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs not only does not increase the therapeutic effect, but also enhances the manifestations of negative effects.
    25. Manual therapy is used only after the cessation of the acute stage of inflammation.
    26. Drug blockades – for severe pain syndrome.
    27. Physiotherapeutic treatment - electrophoresis with novocaine, diadynamic therapy, magnetotherapy, ultraphonophoresis, laser therapy, ultraviolet irradiation, inductothermy, local mud and paraffin applications.
    28. Massage – classic, reflex, acupressure, hardware.
    29. Therapeutic exercise – without stress on the affected organs.
    30. Herbal medicine – various tinctures and decoctions of medicinal herbs.
    31. Surgery

      In case of severe joint damage, surgical intervention is indicated to prevent the progression of the pathology and improve the patient’s current condition.

      As a rule, arthroscopic operations, arthroplasty or endoprosthetics are performed. The extent and method of surgical intervention is determined by the attending physician.

      Treatment with folk remedies

      You can resort to the use of folk remedies only after receiving professional medical advice from a specialist. Among the many recipes of traditional medicine, we note some of the most popular and effective:

    32. Tincture of elderberry flowers, stinging nettle and parsley root.
    33. Tincture of annual pepper and sunflower oil.
    34. Compress with bee honey.
    35. Apply fresh white cabbage leaves to the affected parts of the body.
    36. Fresh burdock leaves are used to wrap limbs.
    37. Compress with silver birch leaves.
    38. The assessment of clinical symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of joint diseases should be carried out exclusively by a doctor (local therapist, orthopedist, rheumatologist, etc.).

        How to cure polyarthritis: how to treat leg joints

        The inflammatory process in several joints at once is called polyarthritis. If this dangerous pathology is not treated, it will actively progress over time.

        Irreversible changes occur that can cause complete immobilization of joints and damage to nearby tissues (photo).

        Therefore, treatment must be timely and comprehensive. In its course, both traditional and folk methods can be used.

        Treatment of polyarthritis can be carried out using the following methods:

      • etiological. It involves eliminating a specific cause: gout, rheumatism, rheumatoid arthritis, infectious diseases. With timely disposal of these problems, the activity of polyarthritis will be significantly reduced;
      • pathogenetic. This treatment has an impact on the development of polyarthritis. Treatment options include anti-inflammatory measures, significant improvement of local metabolism and strengthening of the immune system;
      • symptomatic. This method helps eliminate the signs of the disease and its symptoms: pain, swelling, stiffness and limited movement, muscle weakness and increased body temperature.
      • The most effective and reasonable method of treatment will be etiological, because it affects precisely the cause of the disease. Symptomatic therapy will give minimal results because it is not able to relieve the patient of polyarthritis, eliminating only its manifestations.

        It is important to note that the etiological treatment of some polyarthritis of the joints can be difficult due to the difficulty in establishing the true cause. As an example, we can point out the disease polyarthritis in psoriasis, because the mechanism of this dangerous and serious disease has not yet been fully studied.

        Many methods of treating polyarthritis of the joints are combined and affect all parts of the disease - causes, pathogenesis and symptoms.

        As a rule, treatment of joint polyarthritis can be carried out using the following measures and means:

      • medical supplies;
      • physiotherapy;
      • massage and restorative procedures;
      • traditional medicine recipes.

    Drug treatment

    The doctor may prescribe medications from various groups. The main ones are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. They can effectively:

  24. suppress the inflammatory process;
  25. relieve pain;
  26. relieve swelling;
  27. reduce body temperature and other signs of inflammation in the joint.
  28. Without affecting the underlying cause of joint polyarthritis, anti-inflammatory drugs improve the patient’s well-being as quickly as possible.

    The most popular: Movalis, Voltaren, Aspirin, Diclofenac. For best effectiveness, drugs should be used in combination:

    With this treatment, the doctor will tell the patient that external use of the products can have side effects on the body from the circulatory system, liver and stomach.

    Kenalog and Hydrocortisone can relieve inflammation . They involve injection directly into the cavity of the affected joint. If there is exudate (inflammatory fluid), blood or traces of pus, they should be removed before using the drug.

    Etiological treatment of polyarthritis of all joints can be carried out with a specific drug. If the disease is caused by rheumatism, the doctor recommends Methotrexate or D-penicillamine .

    These drugs suppress the activity of pathological reactions of the immune system. For gout, Allopurinol is used, which can enhance the excretion of uric acid. Infectious septic polyarthritis requires regular use of antibiotics, and they should be administered:

    Only with this approach will antibiotics completely destroy the infection.

    For effective treatment, the doctor will not only ensure the restoration of cartilage tissue affected by inflammation, but will also take measures to strengthen the immune system. For this purpose, immunostimulants, vitamin and mineral complexes may be indicated.

    Maximum results can be achieved by taking calcium and vitamin D.

    For cartilage, the use of agents from the group of chondroprotectors may be recommended:

    Important! The use of chondroprotectors does not provide an immediate effect. To obtain optimal results, you should use them for a long time.

    Treatment of polyarthritis with folk remedies

    The disease polyarthritis of the legs takes a long time to develop and torments for many years. Some patients have learned how to treat polyarthritis of the joints using traditional methods. They involve the use of all kinds of infusions of herbs and food. The most popular and in demand are the following:

  29. 1 tbsp. a spoonful of vinegar, 1 teaspoon of turpentine, 1 yolk. The ingredients are thoroughly mixed until a homogeneous mass is obtained and rubbed into the affected joints;
  30. take 2 cups (500 ml) of fresh bitter radish juice and mix with half a cup of bee honey. Add 1 tbsp to the mixture. a spoonful of kitchen salt (sea salt is possible) and 100 ml of vodka. The resulting mixture is regularly applied to areas of joint inflammation;
  31. prepare 100 g of camphor and dry mustard powder, 200 ml of egg white and medical alcohol. Mix the ingredients thoroughly and rub in circular motions into the joints. It's better to do this at night;
  32. take 200 g: honey, glycerin, medical bile, ammonia. Mix everything and apply to sore spots;
  33. Fill a half-liter jar with red clover flowers and pour vodka on top. Infuse this remedy for 10 days in a dark and cool place. The container should be shaken thoroughly from time to time. Strain the finished product and rub it into the joints affected by polyarthritis.
  34. Each of the proposed means of treating joints perfectly helps fight pain, swelling and other rather unpleasant manifestations of the inflammatory process in cartilage tissue.

    When using them, you should know that no self-medication can fully replace therapy with traditional medications. Moreover, refusing medications in favor of traditional medicine and ignoring doctor’s recommendations may not only not give the expected effect, but also cause worsening inflammation and the development of more advanced forms of the disease.

    Other treatments

    This category should include:

    This way of getting rid of polyarthritis is possible only if its exacerbation has passed, the body temperature does not rise, and the exudate from the joints has been removed.

    Physiotherapeutic procedures have proven themselves well: amplipulse, paraffin, ozokerite, diadynamic. If you simultaneously massage the affected limbs, the patient’s condition improves faster.

    In a state of remission, when the disease subsides, you can engage in therapeutic physical exercises. Polyarthritis, the treatment of which must be comprehensive, includes exercise therapy both in a hospital setting and at home.

    In such cases, the doctor prescribes exercises depending on the location of the lesion and its causes. Polyarthritis of the legs excludes the following loads:

    Swimming in the pool often helps cure illness. During recovery, the doctor may recommend improving your health at mud and climatic resorts.

    Full recovery, unfortunately, is not always possible. In most cases, the patient will suffer from a chronic form of the disease with periodic exacerbations of the condition. However, it is quite possible to significantly reduce the frequency of such relapses.

    What are the types of leg joint diseases?

    There are many types of diseases of the leg joints, but not every patient can correctly assess the extent and severity of the damage. Sometimes it is necessary to undergo a long examination to make a diagnosis.

    And the set of measures to neutralize the disease depends on how correct the diagnosis is. Here it must be said right away that the symptoms of many joint diseases are very similar. This is the main difficulty.

    Experts divide diseases of the leg joints into two groups: arthrosis and arthritis. They, in turn, are divided into several more forms, such as osteoarthritis, arthrosis, and so on. However, these diseases are only derivatives of them.

    Arthrosis is a pathology of articular cartilage and epiphyses, both congenital and acquired. The toes become curved, the patient feels acute pain, and inflammation occurs. Arthrosis most often parasitizes the lower extremities, since they bear the entire load.

    The causes of this disease can be various factors, for example, such as:

  35. Excessive load on the joints of the legs, both when walking and from excess weight. If a person’s work involves standing on his feet for many hours, he may develop arthrosis of the ankle and knee joints;
  36. Injuries received during sports or for other reasons;
  37. Disturbance of metabolic processes in the body. In this case, salt deposition occurs in the joint cavities;
  38. Changes in joints associated with age - abrasion of cartilage, wear of joint surfaces;
  39. Any birth defects – improper formation of ligaments and bones. As a result, the load when walking is distributed unevenly between the limbs;
  40. Hereditary causes;
  41. Operations on joints, as a result of which ligaments or menisci were removed;
  42. Chronic joint diseases.
  43. Leg joint diseases symptoms

    The main symptoms of leg joint diseases are:

    As the disease progresses, deformation of the legs occurs. First, the epiphyses thicken, and then the adjacent muscles begin to atrophy. Over time, bowing of the legs occurs.

    Knee pain? Find out in the article what are the main causes and what proper treatment is needed for osteoarthritis of the knee joint.

    Here is what treatment to use for back pain between the shoulder blades

    Leg joint diseases: treatment

    Treatment of arthrosis, just like other diseases of the joints of the legs, must begin with neutralizing the source of their provocation. If the disease manifests itself due to excess weight, it is urgently necessary to reduce it; if the disease occurs after long hikes and standing on one’s feet, it is necessary to neutralize them.

    In particular, walk less and spend more time traveling, if possible. However, to fix the problem, these actions alone will not be enough. It is necessary to start taking medications that improve metabolic processes in the joints, restore the cartilage surface and normalize blood circulation.

    For arthrosis, exercise therapy, manual therapy and massage are very effective. All these measures are aimed at restoring joint mobility and preventing overgrowth of the joint space. But if the disease does not subside and preventive measures do not have a positive effect, there is only one option left - arthroplasty. This is an operation to replace damaged joints with artificial ones.

    Another disease of the leg joints is gout.

    This is a metabolic disease that is accompanied by damage to the joints. The lesion has its own specifics - uric acid crystals are deposited in the joints, which cause inflammatory processes in it. The person experiences very severe pain.

    Gout cannot be completely cured. The necessary measures are applied only during its exacerbations. Treatment of gout is based on taking anti-inflammatory and painkillers, as well as medications that reduce the amount of uric acid in the blood. During an exacerbation of the disease, the patient must be prescribed rest. You also need to monitor your weight and the amount of water you drink.

    With osteoarthritis, degenerative changes occur in the cartilage. In this case, inflammatory processes practically do not occur, or they are not clearly expressed.

    Symptoms and course of the disease directly depend on the location of the lesion. Most often the thumb, hip and knee joints are affected.

    This is a connective tissue disease (inflammatory) that occurs due to acute infections. Rheumatism can affect any part of the body where there is connective tissue.

    Initially, the “patient’s” temperature rises, after which polyarthritis develops - damage to large joints. It is accompanied by inflammation, redness and swelling.

    Arthritis is an inflammatory disease that occurs due to infections and a number of other reasons. Infectious arthritis can occur independently, or can develop as symptoms of common diseases.

    In this news about the symptoms of arthrosis of the shoulder joint

    For example, monoarthritis can occur due to an infection that enters the joint through damaged skin or through the bloodstream. Infectious arthritis can, for example, cause a complication of a common callus.

    The joints of the fingers and feet can be affected by rheumatoid arthritis. This is an autoimmune disease. Most often it affects small joints. Polyarthritis leads to deformation of the limb, as a result of which a person loses the ability to walk.

    Arthritis of the lower extremities occurs for the following reasons:

  44. Hypothermia of the legs;
  45. Chronic infections in the body;
  46. Decreased protective functions of the body. As a result, the infection can quickly spread throughout the body. There are often cases when the immune system begins to “carry out” attacks on its own tissues and organs;
  47. Damage to the skin on the legs.
  48. Symptoms of arthritis are: inflammation, redness, pain, swelling, increased skin temperature near the lesion. Depending on how strong the inflammatory reaction is, a person may become feverish and become intoxicated. With chronic arthritis, the patient's limb joints may become impaired.

    The treatment of arthritis is fundamentally different from the treatment of arthrosis. During acute exacerbations, it is necessary to ensure the rest of the “sick” limb.

    All movements must be stopped. For infectious arthritis, doctors prescribe antibiotics, hormones and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Hormonal injections are given to the affected areas. This relieves pain and makes the patient's life easier.

    In case of chronic arthritis, it is necessary to keep the joints mobile through manual therapy, gymnastics, massage and thermal treatments.

    Why treat a disease when it can be prevented?

    It is enough to adhere to certain rules and habits so that the disease passes you by. So:

  49. Healthy lifestyle Play sports so that inter-articular lubrication is produced in sufficient quantities, and excess weight does not “make itself felt”;
  50. Balanced diet. Eat more foods that contain many substances that are beneficial for joints;
  51. Pouring with cold water. Such therapy will increase the body's resistance and improve blood supply;
  52. Physiotherapy. As soon as the disease begins to manifest itself, sign up for exercise therapy. The instructor will tell you how useful such classes are.
  53. Make a healthy lifestyle your faithful companion, do not be biased towards your body, then you can avoid many problems.

    Treatment of joint diseases on the legs

    Freedom of movement begins with healthy feet. Problems in this part of the musculoskeletal system significantly affect a person’s life and self-esteem, and prevent them from being successful in various areas. And often joint diseases are to blame. People whose professional activities require high mobility - dancers, athletes - are especially affected. Such diseases destroy the usual course of life and become a personal tragedy.

    Why do such pathologies arise, how to recognize and treat them?

    One of the main preconditions for joint disorders is heredity. With genes, the main structural features of bone and cartilage tissue are passed on to the baby from the parents. The second most important factor can be called excessive loads, causing ligamentitis, arthritis, periostitis, tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, and problems with the meniscus. Therefore, these diseases are often diagnosed in professional athletes. Representatives of a number of other professions are the most susceptible to diseases of the leg joints. Thus, ballerinas suffer from Achilles bursitis, office workers run the risk of developing flat feet, and recruits are often diagnosed with “marching foot.”

    Poor nutrition leads to gout, and hypothermia leads to arthritis. The same disease can be triggered by decreased immunity, osteoarthritis, chronic foci of infection - for example, tuberculosis, gonorrhea, syphilis. “Harmless” skin lesions on the legs, such as calluses and cracked heels, are also dangerous.

    Other risk factors include degenerative changes in the joints, which arise, among other things, due to metabolic disorders as a consequence of age-related transformations. Another reason is autoimmune disorders. Thus, psoriasis can provoke arthritis and lead to disability.

    The most common ailments

    The most common diseases are:

    • arthrosis of the big toe, knee joints (gonarthrosis), hip joint (coxarthrosis);
    • aseptic necrosis of the femoral head;
    • Achilles tendon damage;
    • gout;
    • heel spurs;
    • rheumatoid arthritis;
    • articular rheumatism;
    • inflammation of the femoral tendons, or trochanteritis.
    • The main symptom is arthralgia

      Arthralgia, or joint pain, is the main manifestation. The patient hears a crunching sound while moving. Swelling and redness occur over the joint, and mobility is significantly reduced.

      However, other manifestations are also possible. For example, if we are talking about the bacterial or viral nature of the pathology, then general malaise occurs and the body temperature rises. Malignant processes are accompanied by their inherent symptoms.

      After diagnosis and clarification of the disease, an arsenal of means is used. Taken together, they lead to recovery or at least a lasting improvement in the condition and less frequent exacerbations.

      As part of conservative treatment, the following are effective:

    • drug therapy (analgesics, NSAIDs, hormone substitutes, ointments, intra-articular injections) is also aimed at eliminating the cause of the disorder;
    • means of physiotherapy (laser therapy, magnetic therapy, electrophoresis, ultrasound, paraffin therapy, etc.);
    • spa treatment using mineral waters and healing mud;
    • alternative methods - dietary supplements, traditional medicine recipes with horseradish, white cabbage, honey, mustard, etc.;
    • wearing orthopedic devices.

    If you are overweight, which can also cause illness, patients are also prescribed diet therapy. Scientists have found that reducing body weight by just 1 kg unloads the joint by 4 kg.

    If conservative methods do not help, surgical intervention is resorted to. In some cases, joint replacement is necessary.

    Treatment of diseased leg joints takes a long time and requires considerable physical and financial costs. Therefore, in most cases, the disease is easier to prevent.

    First you need to adjust your diet. It should have enough calcium. The daily dose of this element is 800-1250 mg. It is found in dairy products, nuts, and cauliflower.

    It is important to follow occupational safety recommendations, use special protective equipment and adhere to instructions for using working tools.

    When choosing a profession with “risky” heredity, it is important to determine for yourself what is more important - a career or healthy legs.

    Will help reduce risks:

  54. moderate exercise, especially yoga, which has a beneficial effect on ligaments and joints;
  55. giving up bad habits - smoking and alcohol abuse, which causes calcium leaching and poor absorption of nutrients;
  56. timely treatment of infections and maintaining a healthy lifestyle in general.
  57. You should wear comfortable shoes and avoid high heels, which you should reserve for special occasions, and choose clothes according to the weather, so as not to freeze.
